Your videos have been so informative and I’m so grateful for all the work you have put in. I will still have to disagree will spraying right onto the metal. Conduction, convection, and radiation are the ways for energy to transfer. Conduction being the best. With the foam right on the metal the heat/cold/energy has a direct path to the foam. One inch ridged foam should be installed on the purlins then spray foam. The benefits from the 1 1/2 air space is enormous. You now have a place for the water to drain, metal can be changed if needed, and the energy now has to radiate which increases r value. Put your hand on the metal that has the sun hitting it on the other side and see how long you can hold it there. Now hold it an inch and a half away and see how long. Just thought this should be mentioned. Not wanting to upset you or anyone else for that matter. Grace and Peace Slick

Absolutely not. That’s a great way to compromise the spray foam system. You need the monolithic adhesion to everything for the system to work. Your system you described would only allow the spray foam to adhere to the posts and those can be 8 ft OC. That is not enough. The spray foam is exceptionally good at blocking all forms of heat transfer.

Maybe explain further. I don’t understand. The ridged (xps)foam is nailed to the purlins then the foam is sprayed onto the foam, post to post. Last I new, spray foam adhered to xps foam great. That xps foam has cap nails into the purlins. Has something changed with the spray foam and it doesn’t adhere to the foam anymore, because that would be vital information. Grace and Peace Slick

Insulating an old barn with a gambrel roof seems to be a good test of closed cell foam insulation. Old barns can have lots of places for cold or hot air leaks. And some old barns don't have regular spacing so dimensional fiberglass would not work as well. But, would closed spray foam insulation bond to old wood?

I have a vented pole barn with long ridge vent on top of roof and open soffits both sides of the walls. Builder placed some sort of netting up to fill the gap to restrict large animals coming through. When we apply foam over these areas should I foam directly to the netting on the soffits and attach landscape fabric on the ridge vent for the foam to attach to?

Thanks for the video. I think you answered one of my questions on spray foam and that is on a metal post frame you can just put paneling over top the studs. I do have another question though, my small post frame metal siding shop does not have studs as shown in the example in this video I want a traditional 16" oc wall. Can that just be added over top of the post frame construction and spray foam or do the wall and then spray foam? There would then be a pretty big air gap. Does that even matter? I'm in Kansas where it's hot in summer and relatively cold in winter. Thanks

Mike! Left a message on your website last night. Was wondering if you would have the time/interest to do a paid consult. I have a few questions on my owner build home. Probably less than hour. Thanks for another great informative video!

Man, I love your channel and am in Fairbanks Alaska. I had four of our foam guys here tell me two inches in a wall, 3" in a floor and 4" in a lid. It blew me away. We get to -60 fahrenheit here. Does that sound accurate to you?

It is a good start. Watch my "how much foam do I need video" to get you up to speed. In Alaska I would go with even more...

What if your building has the double bubble insulation between the metal and the studs? Would you recommend removing the double bubble foil layer or just spraying over it?

It all depends on how tight it is. Yes for anything roof related.

You mention a 50-75 year life span. Is that estimated based on how long the building would normally be expected to last or is that based on a degradation of the foam?

Neither. Just a number to get people to think longevity not less. Oldest building in Canada with SPF is 1969 and still going strong.
