I quote Scott Hryciuk from a comment in the song's video here in KZread: “Constance is my mom. Today - December 4th is her birthday - she is 88. She is the nurse in the photo. She is in a long term care home and I have not seen her since early March of this year due to COVID-19. Unfortunately the press release is incorrect. Courtney’s grandmother died in 2020 and she wrote the beautiful lyrics to honor her grandmother. Dylan’s grandmother is still living and has been suffering from dementia for several years. Dylan created the video imagery to honor his grandmother and her struggles at this time in her life. Mom goes by Connie to those that know her. Today her proper name of Constance is more meaningful. Dylan from Versa Films is my son. I am thankful to Courtney and Spiritbox for having the courage to tackle a subject like this. Courtney: I am sorry for the loss of your grandmother. I am touched by the comments from everyone that has been through this. As the son, I know how it affects me - everyday seeing your mother not remember you. Counting the times she remembers your name. As parents we don't always see or realize the impact these circumstance and this disease has on the grandchildren. Dylan, Courtney and all the comments show that the pain runs deep within the families. For me it is tough to watch this video. It is harder to live with or to have lived with this in real life. Words cannot begin to describe. Thank you to everyone for their comments as hard as they were to publicly display. It's amazing Dylan. It's amazing Courtney. It's amazing Spiritbox. Constance is proud. I am proud”. This song is pure gold.

That was exactly what I thought the song was about. I watched my grandmother become increasingly detached from reality, to the point that she couldn't recognize her own children or where she was. The shot where the face in the photograph became blurred really got to me.

I administer medications to the dementia and psychotic elderly here in Aus for 6 years now and it can be a really fun wing/ward but sometimes its so horrific for family witnessing the mental and behaviour decline of their loved ones. It must be horrible on so many levels and I can't count the amount of times I've seen people leave rooms crying. You never know how much mental/emotional strength anyone actually has until you witness something like progressed dementia of a loved ones.

I'm going through this with my grandmother right now and it's been pretty bad for about a year now. Thanks due to some relatives she's in a memory assistance facility literally 1 block away from my home, but we still can't spend time with her due to this lockdown. I can talk to her over the phone, but I think that confuses her even more since she can't see who she's talking to, and she'll often forget who I am mid conversation. It's one of the saddest, most infuriating things I've experienced in my life. I feel incapable of being able to do anything about it, and it's all compounded when people tell you that you're some sort of monster for not wanting your 92 year old grandmother to die while locked up away from family. Sorry to rant / share too much

@@jeffjensen8 @Jeff Jensen I know how you feel. The worse it gets, the harder it is to be around them and pretend it's ok. I remember a few *almost* conversations where just a bit through it, I, my uncles, or even my mother had become her late husband in her mind... Or insisting that she needed to be somewhere for very important reasons that she was never able to finish describing. The end, before I finally accepted that she was gone, was the worst. I'm still ashamed to say that she would probably have been better leaving us sooner.

There are 100s of reactions out there that do that, but this is a vocal analysis by someone who understands how she does what she does. Not trying to stir a pot here just putting my 2 cents. He mentioned in the video it was hard for him to concentrate on the vocals. I imagine after a few watches it'll click for him, but I also can imagine he is trying to concentrate and give his input on her vocals primarily. Imagine you are a chef and you specialized in herbs. He's here to tell you about that rosemary sprig in your amazing steak dinner and why it's so necessary. He knows that steak is juicy and tender, but his life is that rosemary sprig. I agree this shit hits hard and powerful and the video is a work of art on its own, but I don't come here for that. I am eagerly awaiting this guy to do Constance for more of a dive into the video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5We1dmIhafMf7Q.html

Man this song is so good, she sings it so well, that instrument breakdown nearing the end is just so heavy (also with emotions). Found this online: The authorship of “Constance” is mainly attributed to Spiritbox frontwoman Courtney LaPlante. She wrote it during 2020’s coronavirus pandemic. And due to the resultant lockdowns, she was unable to be with her grandmother during her passing, in addition to not being able to attend her funeral. So that’s whom the song itself actually serves as a tribute to. Meanwhile the titular “Constance” is actually a reference to Constance Hryciuk, the grandmother of Dylan Hryciuk, the director of the track’s music video. She also passed away in 2020, to dementia.. And basically, Spiritbox used the occasion of the release of this song to honor both of these artists’ grandmothers. Which makes it even more beautiful for me as I've lost my grandmother to alzheimer's.

I think something that is missing from a lot of these analyses/reactions (there’s a lot to unpack in this song so I’m not attacking anyone) is the breakdown. How it trends off from these cords that align with much of the rest of the song into these very diminished and demonic sounding cords that deviate from the norm. Two of my grandparents have died from dementia and the breakdown captures that gradual descent into a loss of self and normality perfectly. I’m not sure if this was intentionally done or if the band created this breakdown based on how they felt, but I hope they know how much I appreciate this song and especially the emotional that went into that breakdown. It’s more than “brutal” sounding. It captures the very pathology of this disease. My heart goes out to everyone impacted by this terrible disease. I’m working towards studying it in the lab some day. I hope you all are staying safe.

I love mental tricks you play on yourself that get results. The liquid pouring analogy for example. I always found those more useful than just saying 'oh do this with your vocal folds'.

One thing I love about the approach of this and a lot of their other clean sung songs, is that her volume dynamic makes her voice phase into and above the sound of the music. It's like her breathiness is driven by the guitar more than her own vocal push at times.

This song is a vessel that allows me to feel a cosmic pain that we all share but hold deep within. The cry that comes from so deep that its intangible and unexplainable but... more pure then any moment I can experience.

I just wanna thank the people in the comments for sharing there stories, I know its not easy to talk about loved ones that have passed. Just gotta take one day at a time and live it to the fullest, because we are only given one life. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever and courtney is a goddess. 🙏

The chorus is so huge. I love it Edit: Remember when everyone thought Holy Roller was the greatest thing ever (and it was really, really good). Now they release this and everyone is freaking out again, rightfully so. I have a feeling they’re gonna keep amazing us and I can’t wait for that new album whenever it comes.

Not sure if anyone else has shared this with you yet but here's an excerpt from an interview with Courtney about the song: "Due to border shut downs, I was not able to say goodbye to my grandmother Phyllis, to whom the song is in tribute, or attend her funeral. I always promised her that I would sing at her memorial service, because she always requested a 'pretty song with none of that scary screaming.' I hoped writing this song with no 'scary screaming' in it would help me find a sense of closure." "Dylan (video director) wrote his video concept to honor his grandmother, Constance to whom the video is in tribute. Our music videos usually have a horror element to them, and we wanted to explore a different side of horror: the horror of feeling like your mind is betraying you, due to a long battle with dementia. With Dylan's permission, we named the song 'Constance' to immortalize her story."

Love Spiritbox as a metal musician. They're one of my favorite, like Loathe and others. I lost my grandpa this year while taking care of him for the past 2 years but, he also got me into music being in T-Bone Walker's band. Feels are reals. 🤘🏾

This in my opinion, is true genuine music. Stuff that comes from the heart. Any song that has genuine meaning always resonates with me no matter what genre. Its terrible under the circumstances this song was written, but god damn did something so beautiful get born from something so horrendous. I've never heard of spiritbox before and I heard this song on a spotify recommendation. and Im glad I listened to it, it truly puts it into perspective to effects of dementia from the sufferers point of view. This song will always be in my playlist. Good damn job.
