Yet again the plethora of sounds this vocalist can make is insane. We got the whole gamut this time with a close up of some of Will's articulators! Great song to top it off too!

The tongue shape gives resonance. With the smeagol scream it causes the sound to have the rattle you hear. Kardechev Academy goes into better detail on it during his analysis of Lorna Shore.

😎 Your metal reactions are your best imo... This is one of the main reasons I love your reactions... and also your music knowledge. When you "nerd out" on the music as much as the singing really keeps me paying attention. I wanna hear more soon... Will is such a laid back dude. Just watching how he is during interviews, collabs etc, you can tell he's just an average guy who just so happens to be able to make demon noises.
Lorna Shore just released live concerts so you can hear what it’s like in a live setting! Listen to Of The Abyss next since it’s the only one you haven’t heard from the EP. 🙏🏼

@@Melkor54 Wait, there was actually a conclusion to that story? Since they booted him I just moved on, but I'd love to know how it played out.
He has been crafting his voice since his mid teen years and is still until today, also developing his clean vocals and to top it all he is such a humble, cool, fun, and all around good person. His interactions with Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice are so funny and wholesome. They've become like a big sister opera singer and lil bro death core duo lol. I love that you pointed out the musicianship ❤❤ they are all amazing artists 🤘🏻🤘🏻 we loose ourselves in Will's voice but they all deserve sooo much praise 👏🏻👏🏻
Also I love that your flight reflex has diminished to the point of disappearance. This stuff no longer scares you, and that's awesome to see.
Your description of why you like their solos is very applicable to metal I'm general. So many heavy bands just blasts notes at you but don't write songs. Repetition is SUPER important for people to latch onto. We don't have to understand a word you're saying as long as there's a hook.
I'm so glad that Will did a one take for this song! It's my favorite from the EP.
The channel The Charismatic Voice did what im sure many vocal coaches want to do, see what his throats doing. Elizabeth has a video of him making these sounds while they have a camera down his throat. Real interesting! Will is something else.
I love the on-screen text commentary 😀!
The charismatic voice just uploaded the microscope down wills throat video. Insane
as someone who does extreme vocals, tongue and diaphragm are everything. To answer the question about the tongue, pushing the tongue forward allows for highs and fry screaming.

Finally someone who pronounces his name as Rah-mos. I've watched that one take so many times and every time he starts talking, I still think he's about to hit us with some mind-blowing technique. I also loved the way you described the guitarist's solo. That's the best way I've heard that put into words that I haven't been able to. This was fun to watch. Thank you!
So the tongue coming forward is very important for the sound Will is getting on some of those highs. If you noticed, some of his highs have that more Smeagoly sound to them and other ones kind of sound like he's screaming through a long pvc pipe. I don't really know how else to describe it. But it's the tongue getting pushed out with the tip against the back of the bottom teeth that causes that sound.

Wow with your description of the long PVC tube, I now understand why they call it the "tunnel throat" or "tunnels" - but you're spot on the tongue is the key to that sound.

How IS it posible that in one of the best vocal coach channels in all KZread there IS not an Alice in Chains reaction??? How???? We must fix that. 🤗 Greetings from Spain.
I rather suspect that Will's "Smeagol" voice is not actually a fry scream per se, but rather an aryepiglottic fold scream plus significant rattling from the lingual dorsum as essentially an unvoiced palatal fricative. His slow growls also seem to be produced from more than just his vestibular folds - they just have way too much depth and texture. I hear very exciting rumblings that Elizabeth got a camera down Mr Ramos's throat and can hardly wait to learn the results!!
@isaacclarke2072
2 жыл бұрын
I can't comment on the anatomy much, but seeing where the aryepiglottic folds are on the throat leads me to believe it's similar because it very much does feel like that area when I do my own screams. It feels like it comes from the upper part of the throat more than anything, best I could describe it it's like stretching out the bottom end and tightening the top.

Hey Julia! I'm really enjoying your content, so keep up the good work! If I could make a recommendation, I would strongly suggest that you check out Subterranean Masquerade, specifically their song "Nomad". There is this really great kind of live-studio-version of this song here on youtube, which they recorded on a rooftop in Haifa next to a train depot for the Counter C. festival in Japan.

Your musically open mind and the joy seeing you listen to new music makes me a lot of fun. At the end I've got some recommendations for you. 1. Volbeat - Still Counting / sad man's tongue 2. SEPULTURA - Roots bloody Roots / Ratamahatta 3. Type 0 Negative - My girlfriends girlfriend / Black No. 1
From Jinjer Pisces to this; Lorna Shore how far have we come, love that she’s just sucking it all up😍
Thank you once again, Julia, for a great reaction / analysis. I think Lorna Shore have some influence from or leaning to the melodeath* sub-genre. The instrumentalists are incredible - almost as incredible as Will's vocals. I think their lead guitarist is an excellent example of what you can do if you practise your scales and arpeggios every day! I'd love to see you react to Blackbriar - Arms of the Ocean (acoustic live).
Some subtle genius that I don’t think you mentioned: during the final chorus, when the song modulates up both times, Will follows the instruments by using a higher pitched set of screams than he did on the first two choruses that are in the original key. Really fleshes out the feeling that the song is ascending and climaxing, reaching a literal high point. So much better than if they had just used the same vocals as before. Super well thought out on Lorna’s part. Hats off to them for this entire ep and the two latest singles, they’re both excellent. Can’t wait till October for the new album!
I'd love to see Julia breakdown some of Andy Cizek's work! The Current, or any of his stuff with Monuments would be awesome.
I absolutely love love love your reactions. I always learn something. And I'm a monster music fan. Any kind of music is game for me from Deathcore to Opera & everything in between...... 😎🤘 Wait.... Country music is still a thorn in my side 😏
Man, Wil is from another galaxy. Absolutely incredible.
The tongue is used to shape the cavity in the mouth. You can do this yourself if you play around with it enough. You should check out Kardavox Academy for heavy vocal analysis. He does one on To the Hellfire.
I've been waiting since they released the ep for you to hear this one.
Супер ч вас обожаю спасибо за реакцию❤
Lorna Shore is simply like a operatic/classical Pig Vacuum kinda metal...? LOL \m/ Thanks for yet another great video Julia!
omg julia is turning to metal head =) love it
I love the Smeagol reference. It is exactly what came to my mind the first time I heard him sing.
Absolute god tier vocalist
The tongue actually helps, that technique is called "tunnel throat" and you have to place the tongue like that
When he curls his tongue out like that he’s actually setting the tip of his tongue on his bottom row of teeth to create this extra cavity under the tongue for the sound to travel which makes that almost zombie-like sound. It’s one of my favorite techniques to do

Finally!
Lorna shore just released a new song sun eater and its beautiful :)
You were talking about the guitar solos. I agree that this guitarist's solos are done very tastefully in every song I've heard from this band.
Tongue placement is a huge deal when it comes to the sounds you can make while screaming. It is exactly what causes his high fry screams to sound Smeagal like
The tongue definitely helps. Look up Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation, he can do the 'smeagol' vocals but also change pitch so its like he's singing. Check out Your Disposal by them :)
Awesome, Kardavox did this one just now too. Maybe collab with him some time!
Curling the tongue creates a secondary place for resonance. I think you're picking up that sound as "phlegmy". Believe it's a technique called tunnel throat if I'm not mistaken.
He looks incredibly relaxed, but I think if you were to look at most of these vocalist in studios or having fun they look relaxed. The strained appearance is just that, it’s a look put on for shows or music videos. It doesn’t help the sound in anyway but looks good
It looks like what he's doing with his tongue is a type of scream called a "tunnel scream" or "tunnel throat scream" where you get almost a hollow sound with cool overtones. Will Ramos actually noted similarities to Tuvan throat singing in an interview
that is easily one of the greatest guitar solos i have ever heard period
She admired him already 😊
This one will be worth watching. It's a shame the pop filter gets in the way of Will's face for a lot of the time, but you can clearly see at certain points that he's doing some very interesting stuff to achieve the sounds he makes.

OMG YES
yes the tongue is part of the instrument. I use it a lot too to create higher and lower pitched growls. Its just part of the entire instrument :)
One again, great, great breakdown! You are one of the (if not the very best) at your business! However, I have one question: it is pretty obvious that you can certainly appreciate it but, would you say you are right at the point of enjoying metal? I mean, do you really like to listen to it? Any kind of metal would do: either symphonic, death core, heavy metal... I am very interested if this kind of music can actually get into someone's skin even if that person has (or used to have) totally different tast and background. If the answer is "yes", why and how that happend? Hehe. Love from Mexico! Ps.- Eagarly waiting for the footage of your jazz performance...
Love it! How about: The Pretty Reckless-25 (Unplugged)
The best display of his technique is their performance of To The Hellfire on SiriusXM, maybe check that out
The LP is out! Please do the pain remains trilogy!
Adam is straight up a monster on the guitar.
The tongue moving forward adds a lot of resonance on the top of your mouth (I think it’s known as the soft pallet) and it kinda changes up the sound to make a zombie like noise. It’s one of the coolest things I learned to do with my screams even though it’s very hard to annunciate words with your mouth in that shape 😂
I highly recommend checking out a short video regarding “tunnel throat vocals”. This technique is what Will is using when he has his tongue rolled. This creates a zombie like sound
its the tongue positioning with resonance placement often to or under the tongue instead of the usual placements with higher fry being placed in the head or roof of the mouth
What I believe hes doing when hes doing the "goblin-y shmeagle sound" is hes kinda folding his tongue like dolpins or Orcas do and this helps get the "shreeky" or "shmeagle" part of the sound and then sticking his tongue out more helps get that "goblin-y" blend by allowing you to move your tongue out of the way and open your through more giving you both the mid and high over tones
From my somewhat intermediate knowledge as a guitar player. His solos have lots of melody from the base of the scales he uses. The fast bits are played with what I’m guessing is alternative(up-down) picking arpeggio scales or sweep picking arpeggios. The high-pitched note ring out at the end are called pinch harmonics; which I can’t explain well so you might have to research.
@goldenhate6649
2 жыл бұрын
For the pinch harmonics, the tldr is you artificially make the string shorter by pinching it extremely precisely after picking
Saludame en tu próximo vídeo Julia, por favor

I am 1 minute in and I am so impressed by his impression of the demon who lives in all of our bathtub drains
Great video. You should make one of their new trilogy of songs Pain remains...from their new album.
Sticking the tongue out opens the sound within the chamber made by the shape of the mouth and the throat. Depending on whether you inhale growl or exhale growl, it changes the texture of the sound travelling down or out of the tunnel. It also makes the effect you are going for sound less contained or constrained. If you sing a note with the tongue inside the mouth and then move your tongue as you hold the note to external to the mouth, you'll hear the way the sound changes.
Great vid! Hope you'll check out the other two.
Would love to see you react to Lingua Ignota - "Do You Doubt Me Traitor" (No music video but don’t let that put you off). Musically its a mix between classical and industrial noise with a huge range in vocal styles from harsh vocals to more operatic singing. Kristen is a victim of domestic violence and abuse and draws a lot of inspiration from this for her songwriting, absolutely heartbreaking. For something a bit more stripped back musically, "Pennsylvania Furnace" from her latest album Sinner Get Ready. Kristen is a queen who needs recognition!
Since Will mainly does fry techniques it definitely helps to keep the throat mucusy and lubricated. And yes the tongue helps shape the words. And to do tunnel vocals where it sounds like two layer of a vocals high/low, it's because of his tongue shape mostly
Changing external movements of the mouth does change your sounds. When I used to scream regularly with my band, my friend one time lightly grabbed my jaw and opened and closed it in different directions. Each direction made a slightly different sound than the last. Pitch with a scream though was always done behind the uvula though. I always thought the tighter I made the hole to push air though, the higher the sound; like letting the air out of a balloon but pulling the sides of the nozzle apart. The smaller the hole you force the air out through, the more shrill the sound.
Imagine Geoff Castellucci nailing some of those lower register techniques. I'm not saying minds would be blown, but probably some speakers.
