Here's the breakdown: The MC1R gene controls melanin production. In people with brown, black, or blonde hair, this gene functions normally. In redheads, a mutation in the MC1R gene leads to production of pheomelanin instead of melanin, resulting in red hair and fair skin. This same MC1R gene is somehow linked to pain receptors in the brain. The mutation may affect how these receptors respond to anesthesia. Studies suggest redheads: Need about 20% more general anesthesia for surgery. Are more resistant to local anesthetics like lidocaine. May be more sensitive to certain types of pain (like heat and cold).

Conan managed to present both the most "extreme" response to the hot sauces and continue with a hilarious skit seemingly as if the sauces had no effect. He also managed to be a good interviewee and be profound in moments. Usually you either get people that can barely make it through, or show very little response because they can deal with the sauce, but might not interview well. The redhead thing about being resistant to drugs is 100% true. My father is an anesthesiologist, and was talking to me about this when i asked him about his work back in the day. It fascinated me then. Basically, they need a bit more than the average person to stay asleep with anesthesia. I'm not sure if that is for all drugs, but definitely for what we commonly use for anesthesia.

Basically, don't share your drugs with a greedy ginger.

I would have thought that meant he would be even more sensitive to spice since he’s resistant to numbing agents

Yes, as a redhead I can confirm that this is true.

Black redhead here! The dentists are always surprised at how many shots of novocain that they have to give me.

@@Seabeams The sensation of spicy is just pain. There is no taste bud for it, just our pain receptors. So it's just about pain tolerance. As Conan says, he'll do anything for a laugh even at the detriment of his body. He powered through it, or he's used to pain enough to ignore it. I'm not sure if being a redhead affects their sensitivity to spicy food, but that would be interesting to learn if that does affect things.

Gorley’s Tom Cruise analogy was perfectly put. Conan dismissed it but the point is valid: both will fully commit and go to the most extreme lengths to entertain.

No wonder they meshed so well with that car ride parody video, which could potentially have been the dullest thing ever. Full commitment on both sides. 😂

So, now that Conan has, again, gone to that extreme, on hot ones, the universe should naturally bring Tom Cruise and Conan together, on Conan's podcast to discuss their common drive to entertain audiences to the utmost! Or, even better, Tom Cruise does Hot Ones THEN Conan's podcast? OR! Tom Cruise, Sean Evans and Conan eat hot wings on Conan's podcast! Yes?! Lol

Thanks for the welding education, Conan. I'm learning to weld. As a valuable skill to build my own metal framed stuff. I'll take this advice into consideration and suggest it to my welding instructor.
