Pretty embarrassing that Toyota's brand new Corolla couldn't crack the top 4. Especially considering the amount of hype it received.

I would definitely have chosen the 2013 Honda Civic or the 2014 Toyota Corolla, I like Hondas and Toyotas. I do like how Subarus have all wheel drive, it snows where I live. The Hyundai and Kia seem decent. I don’t the Sentra because I don’t like Nissan CVTs or CVTs in general, I like older Sentras from the early 2000s over the new Sentras.

The new Mazda 3 is the true winner in this category.

The other day I took a 2014 Mazda 3 for a test drive which for some reason is not included in this comparison. Granted the one I drove had the 2.5 engine, but that car is in a class all by itself - a blast to drive.

2014 Skyactive Mazda 3 will send Kia and Hyundai running to their momy crying.

Why did motorweek test fairly un-popular cars like the impreza and sentra when they should've gone for the Jetta, Cruze, 3 and Dart! Easily the best 4 in the class

No Cruze, Dart, Jetta or Mazda 3...

For me, it would either be the Civic or Jetta in the compact category... But I wouldn't mind spending an extra 6K for an Acura ILX or 10K for a Mercedes CLA.

dude Acura ILX is garbage for the price of what you get..lol.U get more stuff from the all newly redesigned 2014 Skyactive Mazda 3:). Better driving car with more tech&way better gas milage..lol. It also looks way better inside interior & outside interior.

Huh? Dashboard is not what I spend time looking at. The road is. And of the tested, I believe Subaru has the best visibility. Add to that, AWD, and it'd be my pick.

Seriously guys, no cruze or dart? What made you guys think they shouldn't be part if this test?

In Canada the top of the line Mazda 3 with all options ticked is $36k including tax and destination, top of the line with all options ticked for other competitors like civic, corolla, forte, elantra were all around $31k, the extra $5k for a mazda is not justified. And even if you compare the mid level trims, the volume seller, the 3 offers less for the money compared to other competitors however I love the look of the 3. But as a buyer, other things are more important to me and I think to most people too than the zoom ride and the good looks.

Dude the fully loaded GT Mazda 3 model with the Tech & Luxury package. Costs no more $33k..lol. It is no way close to $36k dude..lol. The middle class model is the GS which I bought which cost me only$24k(this is the total/final price including tax) & Automatic & I bought the Convenience package cause its only $500 more. So its well worth it. Didnt need the $1200 extra for the Moonroof package. U only get the Moonroof which U rarely use in Canada&the shitty Fog lights which is useless&rarely use as well..lol. But if U buy the Base model which is the GX.It starts@just under$16k.Thats standard stick shift.If U get Automatic is$17,500.

Justin Yau before you LOL go check the Canadian mazda website pls. Mazda 3 GT sedan before any packages is $25,855 in Ontario, and including luxury and tech package is $29,855. With tax and destination, the grand total comes to $35,797.95 So im so sorry I was off by a couple of hundred dollars. Its not exactly $36k. But you are off by 3k. And plus I was comparing the top of the line models for all the cars, not the volume sellers or the base models.

Had been waiting for 2014 sales to be in full swing, mostly for the big savings on outgoing 2013's, but also to see if something all new would catch my eye. I've test driven all these and more. Right now I'm leaning towards the 2014 Mazda3, despite massive discounts on the 2013 model. Surprisingly perhaps, my second choice would be the Subaru Impreza, mostly for the AWD which is of added value in the snowy climate I reside in.

No Chev Cruze, Dodge Dart or VW Jetta? Seems odd to leave them out =\

I never liked hyundai or kia styling at all. I'm still looking at a new corolla s premium. I beat my 09 corolla to 80,000 miles and all I have needed was front breaks and tires. Mazda 3 I drove was definite harder suspension like a very slight constant jitter . The engine was crazy loud but not in an awesome way.

Even though they are different brands, the Hyundai Elantra/Kia Forte are mechanically the same car. The main difference between Hyundai and Kia is the interior. Kia is considered to be more "upscale"

Actuallu hyundai would be considered premium and kia more sporty... flagship goes equus, k900, then genesis and so on...

I'll take the Ford Focus any day over these other turkeys; what the hell are these guys thinking? Styled the best and has a 160 hp motor to boot. Car and Driver said it is the best driver's car in the compact category in 2012, especially with the 5-speed. Oh yeah; it is the top selling compact in the world today. The Mazda 3 had a horrendous front end until 2014.

The ad had to have a maximum price of $20,000 for this test. I got the Elantra. While I preferred the interior of the Forte, I preferred the exterior, ride comfort, and features of the Elantra for the price. Hate Corolla' s nose. Hate Civic' s split level dash. Love the Sentra' s interior but not its noise and slow acceleration. Like the Mazda3 performance and looks but it's too harsh over bumps. Impreza looks good but I've no need for AWD. Focus and Cruze are poor on rear seat leg room. Don't even bother with the Dart. Herat gets expensive with options and isn't fuel efficient until you pay more for the diesel. And why bother with Mitsubishi Lancet since it's garbage disposable trash.

If I were doing this test, I would rank the Mazda 3 first, the Hyundai Elantra/Kia Forte second, and Honda Civic third.

Why didn't they use the S Corolla? The LE Eco is much less attractive

It makes no sense how the sentry beat the corolla. I thought I wanted a sentry drove it and nope. Bad handling loud slow and that's compared to a corolla. Looks are very bland.the cvt sucks

$20,000 should buy you alot more than this. The cars should be direct injected, atleased have fog lights, and rims not hub caps.

You can get all you mentioned on the KIA Forte in the EX package. 2.0 GDI. I got ours for 18k.

I don't understand all the clamoring for the Mazda 3. It has a tight interior, which also feels plastic and cheap. It handles okay, but didn't impress me all that much honestly. It is the sharpest looking car of the bunch I'll grant you that. But mechanically and functionally speaking, it isn't a fit for my family.

I'd probably go with a Sentra. I love the styling so much (not to say that the other cars don't have good styling.)
