If you want 'pep', go for a manual transmission, not a bigger engine! In small cars like these, the automatic gearbox can't do much except add excess weight, reduce performance, and worsen fuel economy.

Over 5 months of sub-compact car shopping, I researched and test drove almost all of these and bought the 2012 Fit Sport manual. It wasn't the cheapest, or fastest, or had the most bang for your buck. Interior versatility was awesome, handling was fun, average mpgs are much higher than epa, resale value was top notch, and reliability will be bulletproof. (if my 16 YO hard daily driven Prelude is any indication)

I think you're right. Honda and Toyota shoppers tend to have tunnel vision when it comes to their pet brands, and there's still this lingering assumption that those two brands will be just a little bit better in the small-to-medium category. I don't care how fun and roomy a Honda Fit is, I will not own a car that is so noisy on the highway that it gives you tinnitus for an hour afterwards. And the Toyota Yaris? A tarted-up Echo.

I did not test drive the Honda Fit because of several reasons. #1 - It is the highest priced of the cars we looked at. #2 - I don't like the look, it looks like a low slung wagon with oversized windows. #3 - I had my heart set on the Hyundai Accent but the dealer would not deal off sticker telling me there is only $200 profit in that car so no dealing. #4 - With 4 full size adults I decided even that little extra room with the Versa was worth it, The FIT is fine but the Versa is big car for low$

The Versa was mentioned as being the least expensive car in America, but this video didn't make it out to be a big deal since I assume it had an automatic trans. You can get the manual trans and manual windows with A/C for $11,000. No other car can touch that. And it's rather roomy, too. Yeah, it's a little ugly, though. Don't forget the warranties on this stuff. Kia and Hyundai have huge warranties compared to Honda and most others.

I did look at the Kia Rio but as you saw from the video the rear seat leg room is a little tight but as a substitute for the Accent, it was very tempting. The Nissan guy really wanted my business though, he took the $16,000 sticker down to $14,600 & then gave me another $1,600 more for my old trade & then threw down a free 7-Year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty free with the deal so with all that it was hard to say no. Bear in mind I was not looking for a sports car & am not an auto enthusiast.

I think for a better comparison test you should cover up the badges for consumer testers. If this was 2009, the Fit would have definitely won but it's an old platform at the highest end of the price range with pretty dismal fuel economy compared to its competition. Storage capabilities still offer great utility but in that part of the country it's the Honda badge, not the car, that wins with consumers. Ford fiesta should have been top 3.

I came here to learn something about the Versa, but I guess I’m out of luck. Why even include cars that you’re not going to mention? Waste of time.

No thank you. I dont want a car with a CVT, ugly styling, a noisy engine, and I dont want a Nissan.

The Ford Fiesta is too ahead of its time for this test It’s not wonder it didn’t make it into this couple top 4, which btw is really stupid that don’t even mention the vehicles. With that being said if these people are really on a budget they should really go for the Versa, it’s the only car here that makes financial sense. For 16k you minus well spend a tiny bit more and get a compact.

ANYONE who pays, or PAID that much for these cars.. #1 they over optioned (keep a cheap car, CHEAP)#2 they did not know you can pay less than MSRP. In 2016 model related #'s...Fit? 15k (avoid navigation and all that crap, there is Garmin), Versa?, 12k.. (go base.. or don't buy.. or just barely 1 model higher, with AC... and keep it no more than 13k), Fiesta? I would not buy a Ford if you care about longevity, Accent? 12 grand should be a ice middle of the road one.. not 16k. Yaris? Base model, PERIOD. No more than 12 and a half grand. Rio? PASS. Sonic? Again, if you care about long term longevity.. stay away.

Another $16k test but none of these cost $16k. You may be able to have a dealer find a stripped out version but it still costs more than $16k. Sonic is ok fiesta is a step below. All sonics ive seen cost $19k and thats with roll up windows. Drives good but they need to fix the tail lights. Peppy and ok to drive. When buying subcompact buy japanese or korean. Americans still sell style over substance and they are lower quality and americans still dont give a shit about small cars. Ok job but.....

if honda could make the fit as great but also good looking, it would be an unstoppable success, i think the only reason the fit is not at the top of every buyers list is because it looks SO bad.. which makes you wonder why would honda not make it attractive and have the ultimate subcompact?

badly flawed. Firstly none of these cars gets a fair shake in "bare bones" mode. The Fit looks like an ugly bland minivan. The Sonic comes in a TURBO that is well worth kicking in a few morebucks for. Korean cars will always be subpar and low resale value compared to Japanese makes. Junky Kia or Hyundai. I actually like that new Versa sedan. Loaded up with rims and full power, it's a pretty good deal. Hands down though, the YARIS in it's fully loaded SE trim would have won.TOYOTA is THE best....
