Oil change scams: Hidden camera investigation on what really happens to your car (CBC Marketplace)

CBC Marketplace finds aggressive upselling and services paid for but not performedTo read the full story:

When you trust someone else to take care of your car, can you trust that they're not taking you for a ride? Our undercover investigation reveals ripoffs at a popular oil change chain. We're going in for the advertised $19.99 oil change, but you won't believe the charges we end up with. And did they even do the work? We go up on the hoist to show you what’s really going down at these oil change shops.

I live in Norway. I went to my local Car Mechanic and asked for an oil change. He asked me when it was changed last, and if the filter also was changed. He then told me "come back when you've driven another 2000 miles and we will change it for you, it's still good" I came back after 2000 miles, and he asked me if I wanted to see when he changed so that I could do it myself one day if I wanted, but he would gladly change it for me always if I wanted. I now work there.

A totally different mindset along with the need of countless electronic gadgets and an error of knowledge or judgement can set the world awry. Anyone wishing to learn, practice, or even enjoy the love of simple cars, get a pre 2000 model. pre pollution mostly. Think classic not plastic, well not quite but more or less. And for the great sea of neigh-sayers out there, a well tuned and maintained older car is just as non-pollutant worthy as todays cars.

Thank god I took auto mechanics in high school for two years…I’m now 55, but those simple lessons have saved me thousands in rip off repairs. I’d HIGHLY recommend that everyone take a community collage course on basic automotive repair. You don’t have to be a pro, but it teaches you the basics to protect yourself from rip offs like the ones in the video. I’ve owned dozens of cars over the years, and have called out so many mechanics trying to rip me off, I lost count! (I’ve had to call the police 3 times after confronting the garage, and they threatened me!!!) Knowledge is key in protecting yourself!

Because it gives the rest of us a bad name. You ever went above and beyond to make sure a car was done right, the whole time the customer is making an angry face at you and judging you because they think you're ripping them off. Just yesterday a lady came in for a headlight bulb and her brake pedal went to the floor with no stopping power applied. Replaced her bulb and checked the brake fluid. It was empty. She refused service, so I at least topped it off and pumped the brakes a bit to get the warning light off and get somewhat of a pedal. She then loaded up her kid in the car seat and drove off.

I remember at our oil change shop, we were required to first go by maintenance interval, then by coloration. Even if a fluid looks new, if its been 80k miles and the transmission was never services, and it requires a service at 80k, we recommend it. This being based off of manufacturers recommendations. We generally looked over the vehicles fluids, judged them by color or smell, then checked the intervals using carfax and our own records, then went to make sales. Occasionally we didn’t need to check intervals because the color was extremely bad, but almost all of the employees got real pissy when upper management began to nag us for not making as many sales. Sorry we’re the best in the county for doing the job right

If oil change cost only 29 dollars, it has to be a scam as even required oil alone costs more. 29 dollars gets you only a new filter, no oil, no work. It is a terrible idea to follow carmakers oil change interval as that is way too long. Oils need to be changed once a year or every 6000-8000 miles which ever comes first, depending on driving conditions.

Pro tip: as not all enthusiasts twist their own wrenches there are many “car folk” who know where the brand specific garages are. Talk to these folks. Find a reputable garage you trust and build a relationship with that shop. Not only will they get to know you but also your car. This will aid in diagnosis and future services. This is also far cheaper than a dealership.

You can get a supertech 5w30 full synthetic API certified for $13.97, Castro on the other hand with the exact same certification costs $22.38. Castro claims it has better additive package but I personally put in my own additive so I don’t care who makes it as long as it is 5w30 and API certified.

Tried calling around places to find replacement part, no luck. Manager said he would drive himself to pick up part, never happened. He said they would pay for rental. Took several days to get part and fix it. I was told over the phone higher ups weren't going to pay for rental after they said they would. When I picked it up, employee said she heard what happened and felt it wasn't right since she heard they would pay for it and didn't...so she gave me the keys and said she wasn't charging me for the oil change or battery. Still had to pay for the rental. They tried to tell me the shocks needed replacing too when I had it in for brakes. Car still rides fine.

I complete my own oil and oil filter changes on my '38 Chev coupe and my '67 Chev C-10 stepside pickup truck. Since i don't have a "lift," I have to use ramps to raise up the front end for access to the oil drain plugs. A tight squeeze, but at least I know that the cost will be only for the supplies, and I don't have to worry about screw-ups or outright fraud from oil-change shops. I took the truck to Econolube for lubrication several years ago. The oil was changed, but the technician failed to tighten the drain plug properly. Later that day while parked nearby in a large box store parking lot, I noticed a large puddle of oil beneath the truck. After checking the problem (a loose drain plug), I tightened it and added oil required to bring the level to the proper mark on the dipstick. Econolube or other oil change companies will never touch these classic vehicles again.

I kinda stepped in and said I wanted to see the filter. We went into the shop with them and the dude could not figure out how to get the air filter out. I was pretty sure he didn't know if it needed changing or not. It didn't :) If you can't change your own oil go to your trusted mechanic. Skip these quick lube places.

Anyone else a lube tech? I work at a dealership and we are also told to upset. Luckily for our customers, our lube techs are hired on at no experience either. So we don't know anything about brake fluid color or smell, we just check fluid levels. I've only sold any automotive fluid to a customer because theirs was leaking but whenever we are thinking that a vehicle is in need of new tires , we are always told to sell 4 tires, even if say they just came in due to a puncture in 1. The manager says it can mess up the diff or transfer box. I don't know if that's true, I'm no expert mechanic. My favorite thing to check on vehicles are lights. They either work, or they don't. You cannot lie. The technician videos we send to customers are brilliant, and probably came about because of scams like these.

This is why I love being a mechanic. I don’t have to trust some lowlife with my car

HazzardAllUltra I hate being a woman at the mechanic ... a single (divorced) woman. They do not listen, assume I have no idea what they are doing or what they say that I know sounds odd. Then if I say they need to be good with me because I am a nurse and the tide could be reversed, they laugh ... but I usually get a pretty good job at less than the original price!
