The Selectospeed transmissions were outstanding for PTO work. The cross hatch marks across 5th, 6th, and 9th denotes coasting gears, there is no engine braking down hill. We had a 981 gas and I have a 981D. The 8 series had the slickest way to run an auger or elevator; lock brakes, disconnect the driveline for towing, engage the ground drive PTO and about 6th gear. You have great torque multiplication.

I'd still take that 861 over that 4000 any day. It's just a far better machine than that 4000. My understanding, the 3000=5000 were more "experimental" at the time. Later models, were far more improved. My old 881 was more of "gold" color scheme. Great video, cheers :)

The 4 cylinder 2000/4000 tractors are almost the same and newer model than the 01 series work and powermasters and are the pinnacle of the NAA design. There were no later models of this design. You may be thinking of the 3 cylinder thousand series that uses the same model numbers but are not considered true fords by purists. id love to find an 881 myself, thats a heck of a find

It seems like they would be a great transmission when they were new and properly working. Main reason I didn't like it was it didn't have a clutch to slip so the tractor wanted to jerk real bad from a standstill. Plus most of my fields are fairly short and level so I don't have a need to shift on the fly. Usually just rev tractor up a little more and they do fine.

Having live pto makes it worse due to increased pedal height. It has a front loader. When steering if I'm not real careful , my fingers get stubbed on the loader frame.

Thanks for the info! I recently purchased a 961-D and I'm looking at options for a front end loader. I'm curious as to your thoughts of an FEL in general. How much weight the front end can take reliably. What FEL might you recommend. I'd rather stay away from the single arm loaders. Mine is a wide front end. Looks very much like your 4000. Any info or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

There should be a model and serial number stamped on the transmission just behind the starter. Diesel models are usually corroded away though. Other thing to keep in mind is the transmission may have been changed. One thing I noticed between the 01 series and 2000/4000 is the draft/position direction is cast into the rear housing. Earlier models used a decal. Just another way to tell them apart.

To convert your tractor to a live PTO you'll have to change the transmission, clutch, and flywheel. Possibly clutch linkage if you don't have a double hole clevis on the end of it. You can change the input shafts on the transmission but parts would cost more than just swapping the transmission out.

If you look on the transmission just behind the starter you will see a flat area with numbers stamped into it. That will be the model and serial number. However the diesel tractors were bad for being corroded away due to leaking battery acid. There are a few other things to look for that will tell you if it's an 861 or not. One being the engine casting number. Google will help decode those since there were multiple throughout the years. The 800/801 tractors also have a larger rearend. Easiest way to tell this is the PTO. The spot where the shaft bolts to it will be almost flush with the housing. A 600/601 will have a protrusion out the rearend for the shaft. Drawbar hanger will also be longer than on a 600. Transmissions are interchangeable so nothing really there to identify anything other than the numbers of gears and live-PTO. And finally the sheet metal, mainly hood and grille, are different on the 600/601 and 801. 800 look similar to a 600.

There was a lawsuit between Henry Ford and Harry Ferguson which led to the split between them that created the 8n. Later in the years Henry wanted nothing to do with red tractors and they decided to paint them blue. The dealers would even paint the older ones blue.

The bracket height is 12" off the ground on the 861. I didn't measure the one on the 4000 but I believe it is 18-20". As for the actual drawbar itself it depends on which bar you have and how you install it. I was able to find a drop drawbar for the 4000 that will be blasted and painted but thats a ways off since I'm just now getting the chassis back together.

1958 was the first one I believe. Even though the 01 series came out in late 57 I'm not sure any of those had the diesel engine. The 144ci and 172ci 4-cylinder diesels ran from 1958-1964. Ford then changed to the 3 cylinder in the 2000-4000 and the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder in the larger tractors.
