That looks like fun. That could be the same mower I have. The chain at the bottom of that long, sloping strap is meant to be slack most of the time. The long tractor/mower combination can flex up and down in the middle. This allows the tail wheel to remain on the ground most of the time, to keep the deck nearly flat to the ground, even when the tractor may be heading up, over, down, or off of any terrain on the ground. Being flat allows the blade to engage the plant matter somewhat evenly all the way around it's orbit, thus cutting more effectively. Who knew, right?

I think they are just as cool from an antique perspective but the Ford is more usable Do you think it will handle my 5’ box blade? After just using it this one time I think it’ll probably pull anything that my tractor will pull, But I might have a hard time Operating it on that type of job

I love these old tractors. My 8n has paid for itself about ten times in bushhogging jobs just in the last year. I always have to use OFF and wear long sleeves to help deter all the unhappy flying critters that pop up once you start cutting their home. Seems I'm allergic to everything, but the tractor addiction is strong enough to keep me out in the fields anyway.

My dad owned an 8N then traded up to a Jubilee then later to an 801 Powermaster. There was a world of difference between the 8N and the 801. The 801 having live power, live hydraulics. and better rear axles with seals that were not so prone to leaking oil on the brakes. The only fault I could see with the 801 was it was kind of hard on gas but it was a workhorse.

The fordson major diesel and the later 1963 Ford 5000 the American version was a damn good tractor and powerful. It can do some work. I owned a American blue and gray color scheme ford 5000 (fordson major diesel) with a front loader and it performed extremely well.

@@Hotrodford absolutely! I have seen a few of those 5000 Majors, not common in my area though! My favorite attribute to the Majors is the cheap power. Very fuel efficient tractors and 40hp can get a lot of work done. I've got a bigger tractor, 50hp and it burns twice the fuel. It's saving grace for me is it pulls tillage equipment better, longer wheel base and more weight.

Nice job, Brock. Nice tractor for sure. One thing to watch for when brush hogging with these Fords - keep the front air screen clean (behind the front grill). When brush hogging, ours picks up lots of pollen and can get the engine pretty warm if you don’t keep an eye on that screen and keep it cleaned off. Enjoy! -Chad
