Comparing 3 Zildjian dry ride cymbals - Uptown Ride, K Custom Dry Ride, FX Raw Crash

Let's compare a few "dry" Zildjian rides.
I bought the Zildjian FX Raw Crash a few years ago, and I love it. I know some people think it's overpriced for a cymbal that's not fully formed. But I think it looks and sounds awesome. I mainly use it for a ride that I can crash. And I only use it once in a while.
Recently I decided to try out a few other dry rides-rides that have a ton of definition possibly without much or any "wash." I rented two from Cymbal Swap (cymbalswap.com), so here are all three together.
My thoughts?
The 18" A Zildjian Uptown Ride is pretty cool. It kind of sounds like a kinder, gentler version of the Raw Crash. Very similar, but less trashy, a little more musical. And a little more muted than the Raw Crash. Not a ton of volume, even when you crash it. But I like it a lot. I might wind up getting myself one.
The K Zildjian Custom Dry Ride is probably not for me. I really like the definition when you play on the bow of the cymbal (the main part). But good grief, that bell is too piercing for me. You can't see my expression in this video, but every time I hit the bell with the shoulder of the stick, pain shot through my brain. I think this cymbal would work really well in very loud situations-it would totally cut through. But I can't see using it.
What do you think?

I think they all sound great here. Any cymbal can sound good with proper technique and in the right context.

They all sound cool, but I'm way too OCD to play that FX crash.

You should work on that. It's worth it for that cymbal.

You definitely need to clean those poor babies! There is an old trick and it's called ZUD. You make a paste with some zud & warm water and ALWAYS follow the "grain". You'll be shocked how beautiful they come out and the sound is just WOW!

What if I like them dirty? :) I used to clean my A Zildjians, but I never perfected the process, so I gave up years ago. Maybe I'll check out ZUD. I haven't touched any of my K's. And the Raw Crash (the only one here that I own-the others are rented) looks cool to me in its earthy original state.

Was in a grunge/alternative band in the 90s and early 2k's. Used A's and K's.. and still have a weird PTSD about them getting cracks. (Instant 300 bucks gone every time). Later in life I learned to not play so hard. 😅

😳Cracking a cymbal takes some serious power! Glad you curbed your enthusiasm a bit.

We went pretty hard at gigs, putting on quite an athletic show (to put it kindly). The cracks would usually happen in the middle rings.. must have went through 3 or 4 of each of my 2 crashes and rides. Never cracked a splash or high hat thankfully. 😅 (Still use my Sabian splash from back then to this day.)

I wouldn't give $20 for any of those. They sound like the ride that came with my beginner's Pearl set when I was a poor kid of 13 back in 1971. Junk. Too much swell and wash. Bring back the Heavy Ping rides of the 70's. All ping, no swell. Clear as the triangle in an orchestra.

Ha! Well, the Uptown Ride and Raw Crash are definitely trashy sounding, but I like that. Nostalgia for those crappy old rides is costly! You’d like my K Heavy Ride, which sounds a lot like a Ping Ride. But I haven’t used it since the ‘90s and am trying to sell it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@schmargle I'm just an old fart now, and I stilllisten to the music of my halcyon days gone by. That ping was the driver slicing through any other sound on the stage. Every other instrument sounded cleaner because of it. Steve Miller #5 has a tune called "Goin' to Mexico". Raw Texas Roadhouse Rockin' Blues. None of this, Big 'ol Jet Airliner bubble gum shyte. Alex van Halen plays one, too. Carmine Appice.... Crappy? BAH!😆

Swell and wash is good for jazz, which is what many of these dry rides are used for. I understand why you prefer the pingy rock sound but there’s a reason these cymbals are designed this way.

@@domjfante8140 I know. I'm not a fan of jazz so much either. I'm a Luddite - stuck in the late 60' and 70's.
