Comparing 6 different K Zildjian 20" ride cymbals
It’s possible I have too many 20” K Zildjian ride cymbals. I’ve been looking for the perfect ride lately (decent stick definition but also very crashable), and I haven’t quite found it yet. But here are the ones I’ve accumulated as I continue my search.
K Ride (older) 0:04

K Ride (older)
I bought this one used at some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s. It’s a great all-around cymbal, which I use for rock/funk and could also use for jazz. Very nice stick definition, even when playing hard. Somewhat crashable. Lowish, not-too-pingy tone.
K Ride (newer)
This one is a recent acquisition. Definitely sounds different than my earlier K Ride-a little more high-end sweetness. It’s probably not different enough to warrant having both, but for now, I do.
K Heavy Ride
I bought this in the late 1990s to replace a Sabian 21" Dry Ride. This cuts through loud music very well-in fact, sometimes the bell is downright piercing. Very ping-y. Not particularly crashable. And true to its name, it’s definitely heavy (the heaviest I own). I really haven’t used it much in the last 15-20 years, just because I don’t play a kind of music that demands it.
K Pre-Aged Light Dry Ride
This one is my long-time favorite. I bought it in mid 1990s, when my only other ride was the Sabian Dry Ride. This provided a lighter, more washy cymbal for jazz, acoustic music, and other low-volume settings. There is some amount of stick definition, but it’s definitely washy, especially when playing with larger sticks than I’m using in this video. I love the clang-y bell and definitely love the crash. It could just be used as a crash alone or a “left-handed-side” ride that you crash and ride.
K Custom Dark Ride
This is a new acquisition. I like it a lot. It’s a little darker and lower than the Pre-Aged Light Dry Ride. It has decent stick definition, though I wish it had just a little more. Nice bell, not too obnoxious. Nice crash. I’ll probably use this one when I need something a little in between the Pre-Aged Light Dry and a K Ride.
K Constantinople Medium Thin Low Ride
Definitely unique. A very lightweight cymbal, with a low tone. I’m surprised that there is some stick definition at all, but there is a little. It feels soft to play-the complete opposite of the Heavy Ride. The bell sound is indistinguishable from the shoulder, and the crash is low and slightly trashy. The one real issue is that it’s a lower-volume cymbal than all my other cymbals. So it doesn’t blend in quite as well as my other rides. (Maybe I need a K Constantinople crash?) I would use this for low-volume gigs and certain kinds of jazz. I used to have coffeehouse gigs where I’d bring just one cymbal with a snare and kick. And this would be great for that kind of gig. I’ll likely keep it just because it sounds different than anything else I have. …And I also love the way it looks.

K Custom Dark sounds amazing as well as the rest.. Definitely one of its kind. Live the rest as well! Beautiful sounds

I used to have the 20" K Crash/Ride which was great but I replaced it with the current 20" K Custom Dark Ride which goes much better with my 18" K Custom Dark Crash. Love the K Custom Dark Series.

Heavy is the best. Own one from the early to mid 80's. Has good wash towards the edge for jazz and classic 70's rock. Good ping towards the center for heavy stuff. And the bell is small but projects well.

Can't beat the 80s and 90s Ks.
Indeed the Pre-Aged is the best. Mine does sound different than yours though. Maybe one to try is the 21" K Sweet Ride

23 K Sweet is awesome. If you like it smaller, 21 is also great.
Good demo. The Pre-Aged and the K Constantinople would fit better in a little softer situation.

@@schmargle I'm a guitar player record producer & gp artist who has been playing drums as a second instrument with commitment for 30 years, so I do have half an idea of what I'm talking about yo. Keep up the good work, that's both tight and loose, it's proper "motoring along" and not too fussy, keeping it potent with a lot of drive, see the cymbal move but do you see the stick rise... you forgot how much practice it took to put the strength in as well as the control. I can spot 'em, and this is top notch. I helped open Kore studios in London in 2008, and nobody believed us back then. If you know _[< you know. Grew up with the percussion research workshop at the D.A.C. - diorama arts center Regents Park a long time ago if you're from generation Z. I'm a youth still, make no mistakes. Glad to see I’m not the only one. I have two of those. The 90s heavy and the k con med thin low. Such great cymbals. One of those two are on my kit 90% of the time. I occasionally bring out a K sweet as well.

@@schmargle yeah I actually just sold a few because I want to round out my hats collection. I really want to get the pre aged dry hats and ride and a set of 15” kerope hats
I'm on my honeymoon with my K Heavy ride. Good ping and crashworthy.
If I had to chose one, it would be the K Con.
Cool. I always thought the K heavy was a great rock cymbal. Zildjian hasn't made them in while, I think.

When I played rock, I used vintage Avedis (pre-A Series) cymbals which were brighter. Afterwards, I switched to the K's which - in my opinion - are much better for jazz because they are darker. All Zildjian's are good but I have yet to find any one cymbal of any brand which "fits all sizes".

Yes, it does! Since making this video, I sold the K Custom Dark and then later bought a K Crash Ride. There's something about the pitch I like a little better with the Crash Ride, but I totally agree that the weight, articulation, responsiveness, etc. of the two are similar.

Thanks. Yeah, I only know the weight of one of them (the Constantinople says it's 1980g). And I don't have a scale that could accurately weigh the others. I didn't realize that weighing cymbals was a thing until I started buying a few last year.
K Heavy Ride and K Custom Dark Ride !
Very nice presentation, the K heavy was my least favorite, maybe good for loud rock.

Hi Greg, let me know if you're looking to unload the early 2000's 20" k ride. I used to have one and prefer the tone to the newer ones.

No, this one was probably a DW 6x14 maple snare. I haven't played the Starclassic drums, but my snare probably sounds similar to the Starclassic maple snares.

@@schmargle highly recommend them. tama makes quality drums the reason i asked, by the way, is because it sounds almost exactly like tim alexander's starclassic snare from john the fisherman by primus
