    I just added a reset switch to my C64 using your guide. Works like a charm. Used a round, smooth, dark tan LEGO plate to work as a button, which gets close to the actual case colour.

    Thanks for this video !!! I am going to perform them reset I had already done years back and also done as a kid in 1986. I only suggest taking the cardboard out as only creates more heat in the chips where some already get so hot. Better yet on the Sid chip and CPU maybe more chips with some thermal tape some heatsinks on it. They will keep working longer and sometimes there is a heatshield from Commodore itself that is better than nothing. Sure the Vic2 chip all the way, it gets boiling hot. But often have a cover on it for cooling. Gr Ed

    I had to alter the steps abit when I was doing this. The upper most pin between those two sets of 3 pins is also ground and I had to use that as the ground pin on mine is in a different location. Produces a BEAUTIFUL and CRISP picture though! Thanks for posting this!

    Note to retro game system collectors. I just had success modding an AV cable for a modal 1 Sega Genesis - Megadrive by opening up the plug and re-soldering the AV wires to the right pins. Note on mine the two internal wires were yellow and white and ground wires were already on pin 2 so real easy. Otherwise this mod is great. :)

    It performs a "soft" reset instead of a "hard" reset, meaning it keeps the contents in memory. This is useful for game cheating, adding pokes for infinite lives, level selects, collision detection removal etc etc before SYSing the machine code location for restarting the game.

    Great video - just what I need. One question: Shouldn’t you also ground the audio out (similar to what you do for video out)? Thx!

    On the av connectors. Take it that the Audio out is grounded, but on the Video out, is it attached to the centre pin of the RCA?

    Good job on the mod but I always try to not alter the case if I can. However, your work appears to be good. But keep in mind that you can actually get S-Video and/or composite with just a cable. No case drilling needed and there are reset cartridges too. So, no real need to alter the case for those two mods.

    Does the video and audio have a common ground? If yes you should connect video ground to audio ground right?

    What's the advantage of a reset button over powering off and on? (I'm wondering because I've just bought my first C64 and I'm still moving my first steps :D)

    Had I done it today I would've made a cable instead but at the time I didn't have the parts needed.

    Another way without drilling what I used to do back in the day was to take the ground wire from the 1530 datasette and touch it against pin 3 of the user port.

    Is there any difference between pressing reset or just flicking the power switch off and on?

    Also, a soft reset like this helps reduce the sudden surge of power through the C64 on a cold start. Not to mention preserving the mechanical switch.

    What is the point of modding for AV out when it natively supports both Composite and S-Video through the 8 Pin jack?

  • @bluskos

    @bluskos

    By doing so it makes it easier to output composite as you can simply use widely-available composite cables rather than a specific cable for the 8 pin jack.

    Adding a reset button will eventually short out all capacitors...DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

    If you always turn on/off the power of you c64 to reset your machine and change games you may burn out your fuse and stress your electronic components inside your machine due to peak voltage when you power on. Reset switch, resets your machine like a "command instruction" so no power on/off and voltage stress is required ..just a normal 1 capacitor short out.
