Well as said in the insta post, this technique is quite common in manga since they use the "liquid watercolor" type of watercolor and markers very often, normally watercolor is easier to lay tone over huge spaces and marker easier (also more transparent and faster drying) to darken values over small zones like under the nose or the chin. But the way you do it is of your own, and the piece is beautiful 👌✨

I do all kinds of mixed media to get the best of all worlds. Layer order and paper type or surface are key. Be careful of damaging materials if used in the ‘wrong’ order such as being careful about marker tips getting damaged. Marker and watercolour are more ‘bottom’ layers as very oily, waxy or powdery mediums damage marker tips. Also ensure watercolours and similar are completely dry before adding the marker to avoid damaging the art/surface. Being bound by ‘art rules’ as if they are ‘valid’ or ‘laws’ severely limits us! Use mixed media and have fun everyone!

This drawing is you all the way. The way you just went right in with your colors and mix media was awe inspiring. You even mention about the lack of planning you normally do on your work. In the End, I feel you have captured a much more organic you. The artwork is still all You, but the work shows your much more relaxed and spontaneous subject. There is no mistaking that this art is made by Chris Hong. I have always loved your style and subject matter. I knew you were much harder on yourself, and your art, then you deserved. I like this new you, I hope you are much happier now as well. Cheers from Michigan, USA. P.S. I am sad that I missed your art sale, I am a sub but somehow my Bell Icon was not on. I fixed that right away.

Your illustration came out amazing! I love seeing and hearing you talk about your process! 😀 Be a little careful with the layers however. Alcohol markers acts as a solvent and can pick up pigment from the watercolor layer and watercolor pigments can be damaging to your nib and will clog it over time depending on how much watercolor was laid down. Same thing with colored pencils (especially colored pencils). But with how light of a layer it was it shouldn't be a problem.

quick tip from a fellow marker artist! You don't wanna leave your markers standing in a vertical position, you wanna lay them flat , horizontally, to preserve them longer.

I love how she looks like she's diving towards a light, surrounded by colorful noodle soup~ I feel like this averseness to mixed media is a bit of an art school thing. They do tend to teach you about how to preserve the image of your art for the longest time possible, and mixing mediums makes this really difficult. It also tends to go through one medium at a time, teaching you the ins and outs of it and holding on to that medium "purity" at all times. I grew up just throwing anything I had together on a page and only upon getting older and having more contact to art school people did that medium-purity snake it's way into my brain as well (except for artists with a passion for rl-3D, those throw any- and everything at a canvas of choice :'D). I do get that for an original-piece-art-market sticking to one older, tried and tested medium like oil, gouache or watercolor, is the best way to go but that's also a bit of an old-timey way of thinking about art, in my opinion. We live in times of vast opportunities with digital influences! Light fastness doesn't really matter anymore if you plan on making prints, you can make a perfect digital image of said hodge-podge piece and preserve it that way :D Paper? Medium? They don't have to perfectly go together anymore! Toxic paint can eat away at my piece and disintegrate it in a few weeks if I just want to make prints of it. I thought once that its a shame we artists don't get to sell originals using this way anymore but is that really necessary? We don't have to spend time and money on preservatives and protective coating anymore, no special sleeves or uv shields; and I think that's pretty great :) It all comes with it's pros and cons~

Really fun piece, Chris. If you're interested in lightfast marker options, I know Winsor & Newton, among others, make lightfast pigment watercolor markers that you can use in conjunction with quality color pencils and quality watercolors if you want all media you use to be lightfast for the longevity of a piece (for sale, etc.)

Yeah... the only problem with markers is that they are not good for display since the colors fade quite easily over a short time, so if you want to frame your original work and hang it on the wall it's highly possible the marker colors will fade fast so you will need to store your pieces very well and avoid exposure as much as you can. You can use the test sheet you made and see how fast the colors fade by leaving it out a couple of months and then go back and fill with the same colors next to the old ones and see how much they have faded.

I've used watercolors and alcohol markers (specifically QoR and Copic) together before when making a drawing for my lil sis, and I really loved how it came out very vibrant and it gave it a really cute cartoony vibe. I also am in the mindset (or trying to be in some cases!) of "I bought this item, now I should use it", without being weighed down by what people may think of as the "proper" usage. Are supplies expensive? Yes. But that's even more reason to use them how you want, imo.

I see it a lot for people who are primarily marker artists for things like backgrounds and large areas, since it does mix well with practice and saves ink on pricey markers.

I’m not worried about the archival quality, you can always make prints, (but I wouldn’t sell the original.) I’m more worried about you ruining the nibs, especially since you used opaque, semi-opaque watercolors. The nibs are bound to pick up some pigment off the paper. Let us know if the nibs get clogged or frayed. Curious.

When I saw the last video you u did where u said u weren't gonna swatch your alcohol markers I actually said out loud to myself, she's gonna get tired of that very quickly.. lol. I'm glad u decided to swatch them. I also haven't seen any1 else using alcohol markers with watercolor. Although I'm sure there are plenty of people who do..I love all of your work its very original and beautiful. My favorite piece is the messy artist one. Sorry for the paragraph.

I not recomend to use markers with WaterColor paper, because the texture and cotton of the water color paper can damage the tip and suck the ink or alcohol of the marker, but if you are not afraid of that go on mixing medias
