I never thought of sketching with a highlighter first. It gives such a cool effect, almost like a print or a digital piece

Yeah, I saw a dude on tiktok do art with just highlighters so I realized they could be used as an under painting but I still haven't use them in my own work yet.

How old are you people, five???? This is how we had to do things in the 60's and 70's, for newspapers, magazines, ads and other illustration. We didn't have freakin- digital, we had to know how to draw, how to wash, and how do to pages of accurate ads overnight. Y'all make me so tired sometimes.

As a baby artist watching people do studies not only teaches me but is so fun to look at. Drawing people and the human body is fun
AWW no problem girl I’m glad you’re enjoying the markers!! These turned out gorgeous 💖

It's so relatable every time you say "I think we're done~" and then there's more footage of adding details 😅
These are so pleasing to the eye, i love how minimal they are!! The way you group shadows and render inside it, but then the light side is kept simple, everything is balanced i love it

good observation, thank you! :)
It’s so impressive how easily you adjust to any art material your hands touch! Your work always looks wonderful and fresh. I have never seen someone work with markers this well to be honest. Thank you for your hard work, you always inspire me 💕
The way you block down color and shading is amazing!! I love the blues, purples and greens on the skin. I’ve never seen anyone use markers like you do. I feel so inspired

Agree!!! 😍
The highlighter just made these portraits pop...wow Can't wait to try this for myself :)
also, if your friend didnt give you the swatch card, i recommend making a palette and noting down the numbrs of the markers. that saves you so much time when drawing with them
CHRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So good to hear from you. Got a joke for you: Knock knock - Who's there - O-who, - O-who who? C'mon people this is comedy gold!!
It's nice to see someone using Alcohol markers the way I would use them if I owned some
chris i can't tell you how motivating it is to see an artist i admire so much encountering problems & adapting in real time instead of giving up. it helps me remember that the road to creating something impressive is messy & difficult, but the only thing needed is perseverance. thank you for posting the pieces you struggle with!
With such a big selection of markers maybe a big swatch sheet would be a good idea. Just on a separate piece of paper so you can reference it instead of swatching every time. Love watching you process both for full body studies and for portraits!
I’m screaming, these are absolutely AMAZING. I’m jealous of your skill despite using markers for the first time (I’ve been using them for 7 years and you’ve used techniques I’ve never even thought of!)
Very cool marker sketching style. Reminds me of JC Leyendecker.
Just found your channel, i could watch you talk and draw all day. This video helped me out alot and see things ive never freaking use to!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Might not be for you but I actually went ahead and labelled all my markers with a small swatch of the actual marker (done on sticker paper and stuck on the markers side) so that I know what shade they are when I look at them. No need to check a swatch paper everytime as the colour is right on the marker. It's a bit of a tedious task on the upfront but to me it's worth not having to constantly pick up and open and close markers to test colours!

Good idea, like maybe using those small folder tab labels to swatch on and just stick on a marker each time you're using them so you're not doing the whole box at once?

I wasn't even aware that Im watching this for 35 mins and still going now. Everything you do looks so interesting to me! More of these long videos! xo
You know you use colored pencil, a lot, when you instinctively rotate markers the same way 😅 I can relate!
This is so captivating. I'm envious that you can be so messy, and I mean that in a good way. I only use alcohol markers and I always need to make sure everything is blended or I get twitchy. I love how you just block out the color and move on.
Impressive! You make them look like digital paintings. So vibrant and strong. I’ve never seen anyone do this with alcohol markers!
Your art inspires me!
i took pointers from you, to make a named swatch sheet and to uncap them away from the paper to avoid the splatter.. i appreciate the natural pase and no music, reminds me it's good to be in a relaxed environment as someone w adhd. also was in awe the moment i opened the video, that first one is so nice, great color combinations
Those 2 are especially gorgeos!!!💜💙💜
I like that you put your reference beside your art work. It's really helpful for me to learn on how to identify the darker shades on reference. Thanks a lot! 🌹
Bravo👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 so courageous in your exploration. The studies turned out great! Really like how the highlighter underpainting turned out on the last one. The electric orange against the blue of the flowers👍🏽Good lesson to us all to continue to grow and try out new mediums.
I loved the use of the markers in your portraits especially how you did the shadows and highlights. Something to try or sure. I just started using the ohuhu markers. Looking forward to more videos like this. I feel like I’m learning with you! Thanks for sharing!!
Awesome. Love that first one. The hue/value choices are just phenomenal. I can picture you geeking out as you rounded the corner away from the early awkward stages, towards when it all comes together. I just ordered a set of these and I'm totally going to do a little draw along session with this video 🤘
Amazing as always! If you have troubles with remembering marker colors or you have too many of them to remember, try putting a lil piece of paper with color swatch on each one. Its tedious, but once its done its a lot easier, you just take the marker and check out your lil swatch on it. I used printer paper and then just taped it, tape on top of the paper. For me it was way easier than keeping a big swatch sheet and searching what is what (and also updating it regularly…), so i just went with separate lil swatch on each marker. Hope it helps! Sorry for the big ramble tho
I adore your Skillshare classes. I think I've said it on Skillshare but I've never been able to do portraits my whole life. Like something didn't click and now I adore doing them and have gotten really good if I dare say so myself. Your class taught me more than any other class EVER. Thank you Chris! Ps. I love to see you use markers!! 🤗
Oh wow, I'm a big fan of markers and of your style of sketching portraits, so cool to see it combined=))
Great piece of art. I appreciate the details and specifics. Thanks for sharing ❤️
Thank you so much for this, I love your work. I would love to see more of you using alcohol markers. ❤️👏👍
I just wanna say its very unique the way you go about doing art, doing a little of a line or color then pointing your marker / pen up to the air after every stroke is very interesting to see since I never have seen many artists do that on KZread its very cool to see!
These are so pretty!!! Really inspired me to pick up my markers again!
This is just amazing !! 😍
love above ground... funny i was there at oca when it was an office for student placement etc.. and things grew from there.. thanks for the marker video , i was curious about values and markers.. not everythng has to blend lol
The highlighter effect is SO COOL ♡
I came back because I have been having troubles with darker skin tones whil also trying to bring out colorful areas.. I thought by seeing someone do a portrait with darker skin that I would be able to see the techniques and somewhat replicate it.
Wow. I was just skimming through tutorials for inspiration and happened to see this. It wasn’t a tutorial, I just really wanted to see you draw this portrait and ending up learning a really cool trick anyway! The highlight sketching is blowing my mind.
Those look to be a quality set of markers. I love the way they layer so effortlessly. No streaking. They blend very well, like watercolor.
Ohuhu comes with swatch cards. Look in the container. She may have given them to you
love your art so much😍❤️😍❤️ keep it up💪🏻💪🏻💖💪🏻💖
But it DOES look like Amandla Stenberg…I knew it was her from the thumbnail. 😊 These are beautiful!!!
I love your artwork! Thank you so much for sharing your art process 🖤
loving the longer videos! ❤️
Every portraits here are very beautiful, didn't know that these marks can do wonders.
this is really inspiring work! its really impressive mark making and how you made a smooth medium still have texture
i love seeing your sketch process i learn a lot from your content! you give me insperation
You are insanely talented, your art is how i imagined I wanted mine to look like when I was a kid
This is the first time I’ve seen someone with the same tic that I do while drawing 😂😂 the little wrist stretch/rotation after drawing a couple lines right when you go in with that brown liner pen totally let’s me know you’re feeling nervous and therefore thinking really hard. I do the same thing and people watching me draw get annoyed by my pausing every 2 seconds. ANYWAYS, beautiful sketches, I adore your process and your style!!!
I love your videos, I don't find them boring at all :)
Blessed with another Chris Hong video ❤️
Really enjoyed this one! It was fun hearing about and seeing your process for problem solving as you approached your hurdles!
Мне нравится, как вы не просто копируете фото, а создаёте что-то свое, используя фото как образец. Это то, к чему я стремлюсь✨
just the notif from your channel puts a smile on my face!
Asmr specially when you're using the fineliner 😱❤️😍
Thank you for this amazing video. It's a joy to watch you work and so helpful to hear your thought process. And your results are understated yet stunning, so they make me want to give it a try myself.
What a great video!! I had no idea what you could do with these markers. Amazing.
Sooooo exciting!!!!! Thanks imawonder!!!!
Another great portrait from another great artist
You two are my favorite, I've learned a lot from you two.
Beautiful!! I love watching your creative process so much, so relaxing 😌
Use markers all the time! it's wonderful! this inspired me to do some lineless marker stuff of my own.
I am So impressed by your art 💜 this is wonderful, you are so talented omg. Also, im learning a lot with this video so thank you 💕
probably the only marker artist i like! so good
Amazing as always 😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰
Excellent!Thank you for sharing!
It's awesome. I found it useful to create a swatch page, for reference, with the numbers marked next to each swatch. It's time consuming but worth it. Your portraits rock ❤️
I LOVEE your workkkk.
im so excited when i see your new videos in my sub box! i personally really enjoy the ohuhu markers.. but the amount of pigment goes away rather quickly. i only did a couple larger pieces and some of the best colors just sadly dont work anymore, so i buy replacements from a different brand since they dont sell them one by one unfortunately. i love how you use them! i once again feel inspired to pick mine up and use them again..

haha i can't pull myself away X'D always more to be done! until i've gone overboard lol
When you were looking for a lighter color for the forehead in the 2nd portrait in my head I was like "colorless blender, colorless blender, colorless blender" the blender if you have 1 is no pigment marker and it tend to make the markers lighter...
Honestly the portraits turned out amazing and the studies overall were really helpful
Thank you for breaking this process down for us! Like choreography in dance. 💃 I just got some Shuttle Art brush pens as a starter. I can do portraits in WC or ink drawings. Love the comic book style portraits ❤ Amazing 🎨
So nice drawing I love marker these days👍
I love your process !! and the results of course =)
Amazing!!! 🥺
Wow thanks for this video, i recently bought some alcohol markers but idk how use them, so seeing your video is very userful to see how you use them.
Your process is really helpful to watch C: thank you
i ordered these bc of your wonderful video! 🙂
I love your art 🎨
Could u tryout the Arteza Skintones and Portraits markers please?? I brought a pack of 36 markers and I don't know how to properly use them 🥰☺
These look so amazing I wanted to know how you kept them from fraying on the paper
Thank you!!♥️👏🏼♥️
Your videos are so fun to watch
This is amazing. And it’s your first time!!! Damn
I loved your last video, it helped me so much on how to tackle anatomy, would love more videos like the last one, but I love these portrait studies as well, your videos all help tons amazing content! 🥰💜

I like to draw with markers and this video was very helpful to me, so thx a lot🛐🤎
I love your style so much!! I wish I knew how to use colors the way you do. I think all 3 portraits are so cool! I love the 3rd one too, but I think the only thing missing is giving her a neck...maybe? Thanks for sharing your talent
Something interesting that i took away from this, this video doesn't have much editing and it still works. It's just you talking and drawing.
I was confused why there was such little likes and just realized/realised that this was 8 hours ago🤣🌸✨♥️ Btw I LOOOVEEE YOUR ART!!
Wow amazing 👏👏👏👏
So prettyyyyyyy ♥️
A blending marker would have removed some of the color on the light side to correct the values. Edit: but your second portrait looks like me 😄. That actress someone I get told I look like but I've never seen it and then you drew my face exactly. Kind of spooky but I like it ☺ 👍🏻.
It helped me a lot. Thank for your detail video
