Wish I had known you were going to be out here. Would love to have met you and thanked you for all of the great videos on the XJ's that helped me with my build.
My grandfather grew up in Lake City and I’ve been over the Alpine Loop many times. It was a much rougher trail when I was a kid in the 80’s! I miss it, so thanks for a drive through memory lane.
Love me some Alpine loop. That portion of Colorado is amazing.
My grandparents had a cattle ranch 18 miles west of Creede (if you take 149 east out of Lake City). We had a Willys wagon and explored all around Creede, Lake City, and in the San Juans. I don't think the Alpine Loop was there then or we would have made the trip. We moved to Steamboat Springs and continued our Colorado explorations. My dad's passing in 1968 put an end to our Jeep days. The Alpine Loop is on my bucket list. Thank you for sharing.
Great video! I lived in Lake City for fifteen years, so it's great to see you exploring my old stomping grounds! My '76 Wagoneer and '91 XJ went over all those roads numerous times, along with many of the less-known trails in the area that are more difficult. But the Alpine Loop is certainly the most popular, mostly for their scenic value. Two years ago there were unprecedented avalanche conditions that led to those huge slides paths you saw.
Man wish you did a meet-and-greet here in Colorado! Be nice to meet the man that got me into XJ's🤙
Matt thank for you all the great content over the years.
Have to put that route on my bucket list. Great country. Thanks for sharing!
My family &I just did the loop & Poughkeepsie gulch last weekend the views are awesome 👍👍
Beautiful does not begin to describe the views!
Thanks for sharing...really enjoy the banter between you two & your back trail videos!!
Just did the Alpine loop, imogene, and black bear last week! So many great views.
That kind of scenery is why I've never though about leaving Colorado in all my 53 years.

Such an amazing place. I was just there 3 weeks ago myself and had a blast.
Great Video! Nice to be out just like that. Peaceful, open and beauty. Everything just Fresh, Blessed and feeling the Freedom
Hey Matt, The trail you exited on was Engineer Pass, which is the more rugged terrain part of the loop. Poughkeepsie Gulch is an offshoot of Engineer Pass, and is even more difficult/technical for stock Jeeps, and there are signs that point that out before you reach the "Wall" which is the hardest part of the trail. It would be a great place for your Scorpion Crawler to have some fun on!

Actually it is the access trail to Engineer Pass called Mineral Creek trail. Poughkeepsie Gulch is what is seen at 21:30.

Matt this was a nice change of pace, and great to see you Hope on the channel. Would love to see more of this kind of stuff.
This comment is just a WEE bit late, so likely won’t be read. But welcome to Colorado, the state in which I (and my wife and kids) were born and raised! Not many can say this very thing. Be safe, and enjoy your visit and plan to get home safely…..
Just got back from there! Absolutely beautiful country! Our trip was very dry and dusty.
Hey Matt, nice to see ya'all out in the area I live in. ENJOY!

Over the past nearly fifty years I've been to CO many times, and had heard about the Alpine Loop, but never experienced it. Thanks for the ride-a-long. First time I traveled from Durango through Silverton and up to Ouray was in 1977. I was twenty years old. There's a super easy trail you might try if you're out in CO again. It's Holy Cross City near the Homestake Reservoir. There's a group of four wheelers that go up after the first thaw each year, clean up any "trash" left by inconsiderate wheelers and make sure it's open for the season. It's short and easy, as I said, but a fun little ride. My cousins and I hiked it and ended up following a group of four wheelers, mostly in jeeps, up the trail to the City, which is a ghost town. We hiked on up to Cleveland Lake, camped there a few nights and did some fishing. Fun time. There's also a trail from Crested Butte over to Marble, CO. I made it up to Schofield Pass in a rental car, but not down into Marble. I'd heard from the Pass into Marble was very challenging and that possibly it was closed by the company mining the area. Not sure. It might be another one to check out some time. If you try it, ask about it with locals in Crested Butte first. Looks like you guys avoided altitude sickness. Good for you. It can be no fun. I may not live too far from you; Louisville, KY. If so I'd love to come visit some time and maybe check out any projects you'd be working on. Hoping to finish up my 1960 Willys wagon this year. It's originally a CO vehicle.
Nice ride TY
You look like a true Coloradan with that windshield crack! The alpine loop is a great scenic drive. You are in the prettiest part of the state in Ouray / Silverton.

Love this video! Good to see you guys out there! We did our first overland trip this year from Chatt Tn to Sedona Az. 12 day of camping and pure fun. You can try to describe what you see all day to people but some things you just have to see for yourself.
Pretty awesome man. Love your narration.
We spent 3 weeks exploring lots of roads around that region and had tons of fun. I would enjoy another trip there to see places we didnt go and ride the Silverton Railway. It was booked up for weeks and we didn't get to experience the train ride up the mountain.
Beautiful location and Jeep JL Perfect combination 👌

3 and 1/2 hours to get from lake City to Silverton! That's a good reason to save some time and take the 6-hour Alpine loop.
Nice ! Welcome to CO! Looks like you had an awesome trip :)
Man I hope I can make a trip out to Colorado. That looks awesome!
The week after you posted this video, my neighbor and I drove over from Alamosa with my '98 XJ and drove the loop. I was over there 6 years ago to climb Mt. Uncompahgre, a 14er. What a great drive! We really enjoyed the ride, didn't have as much rain as y'all got. Would like to have known you were going to be here, might have had a meet and greet. Really enjoy your videos, lots of good info for Jeepers.
Great scenery 👌
Thanks for the great vids. My wife and I enjoy your adventures as we are not able to.
Great video. I'm headed to Ouray tomorrow for 5 days. This is my 15th year of being there.
This is, by far, the best video I've seen done on the Alpine Loop. I'm up there every summer, and own a place in Lake City. I don't think anyone else has captured the loop quite as well, but there's more to do than you think In Lake City! The ice and debris bridges you saw were the result of historic levels of snow pack. There were many mountain faces that avalanched that winter that had not had an avalanche in living memory. FEMA got involved because, if one of those ice dams had collapsed, then it could have flooded lake City and taken out a third of the town proper! It's back to normal now, except for the remaining downed trees on the mountainsides.
Freaking awesome!!!!!
I’ve been on a few trips where all you see is clouds like your view from the Engineers Pass sign! Great video and I need to go back and check out the build on this rig!
@bleepinjeep
3 жыл бұрын
Ya it wouldnt be much of a view if it was cloudy the whole time.
We just missed y'all! We was there not too long before you. We drove Engineer, Mineral Creek (the rocky trail you exited to Ouray), Poughkeepsie Gulch, Hurrah Pass, Red Mountain, Ophir, and a few others. We drove over to Moab afterwards to wheel!
Oh man, you guys found a killer campsite. And YES... there are indeed bears up in that area. Looks like you had a great trip! As someone else mentioned you finished your journey on Mineral Creek.
Awesome 👌
I ran Engineer pass in the late 90s from Lake City to where we camped north of Silverton for a vacation. Looks like they've improved it some since I did it, there were some spots that were a bit of work for my Trailduster on 31s.
I could sleep so soundly beside that waterfall
I loved seeing you with your wife I'm assuming but anyways it was 💯 AWESOME TO SEE I would love to to see that More!!! Amazing video of course too and the 1st time we have EVER SEEN that area so Thank You for sharing this with with us all!!! 😎💯

Nice place !
the loop this year has been really busy. I have live near silverton and camp a lot up there in my tacoma.
Next time you are in Colorado, look into running Red Cone. Scenic with challenges getting there but nothing to crazy. Happy to show ya around.
Imagine if we had a unique compound that could melt the ice after a certain depth is measured by a stick and camera, so the more active areas could be managed better... (something that won't hurt the land/animals... maybe a giant dirt blower from the top with a conveyor belt to bring the dirt upwards.... and using multiple fresnel lenses to heat up the area...) who knows... lol Love the adventures and all the ha-ha moments... lol Towards more Blissful moments~!!!

True. I used to live in Park City in the 1980s through the late '90s. Raced bicycles out of there and went to Durango for the iron horse classic. In about 1990. Went back and was pretty shocked about how it changed. But, that's everywhere. You can't escape it. I don't know where you live now, but somebody's going to say the same thing about you I bet. I don't mean that as a slam. It's just everywhere. St George, Flagstaff, Park City, San Diego, everywhere. Silverton and Durango are still awesome though

I've just found your site, I'm going to follow your travels. I'll tell you why, apart from the wonderful scenery, you are both so engaging, you make it so much fun, always smiling and don't we need smiles right now. I'm an English oldtimer who has hiked, camped ( tent not RV etc) and off road travelled. Mostly the four corners areas but into the S W corner of Colorado, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride and back into Cortez and Mesa Verde Nat. Park. Unfortunately, I don't think it's now going to be possible at my age and the Covid 19 pandemic, so I shall follow you two young explorers instead. Take care and stay safe.
That's not Poughkeepsie Gulch at the end. That's Mineral Creek. You should have done Poughkeepsie. You would have loved it!!!
