Many years ago while on vacation, my wife and I had the opportunity to drive the "Going-to-the-Sun" road in Glacier NP---a real "white-knuckler." As we asceded my wife would comment, "Oh, David! Look at that view!". My reply: " Cripes, woman!! I'm not taking my eyes off this road for one second!!"

I had a good chuckle at you're comment, I may had mentioned this on this channel before about that very "highway" you had taken as long long ago I was on it for the first time as a kid riding in the top bed of a pickup camper ( legal back in those days ) and my uncle hit the side of the mountain with the corner/side of the camper ( a rented camper at that ) as the rock juts out in a particular spot around a curve heading down on the west side not that far from Logan Pass. Us kids thought it was a great time, my dad ahead in our camper and my uncle and aunt not so much as to the accident. My dad was not phased by a pass like that but my uncle was busy filling his undershorts LOL. I've been over it a few times myself as an adult and love the scenery along that road. Also have been on the very trail Cat was on with my full size pickup and numerous other ones in that area of Colorado years back now and It truly is a gorgeous area without a doubt in what I have seen of Colorado.

We always knew Shady Lady as Effie's. My oldest son was born when we lived in Silverton. I drove or rode the bus to work from Silverton to Red Mountain Pass for a year then moved to Ouray (btw, thanks for pronouncing Ouray correctly). In 2 years, I got stuck behind snow slides 9 times. Always coming home from work. My Grandpa worked on the narrow gauge railroad when it went from Antonito, CO to Aztec, NM then worked at the Sunnyside, Mayflower and Treasury Tunnel mines. In fact one of the houses at the old Idarado is his old house that was moved from Eureka. Corkscrew is a veritable super highway compared to other roads in the area!

Catherine, How sweet to watch you filming and giving a brief history on the historic street in Silverton, Colorado which is named after my great grandfather, Thomas Blair. Not that he had anything to do with the numerous brothels that followed! Thomas was with the Baker party who explored the area back in the early 1870's, built his cabin in Arrastra Gulch and was instrumental in plotting out the town of Silverton. Enjoy the fall splendor of the beautiful San Juan mountains while you are visiting the area... Happy Trails!

Catherine + Cappucino + Breakfast After Church = Perhaps the closest I can get to Heaven while being in Virninia! Catherine, without any doubt this is your finest video yet, on too mnay levels. Yes, I enjoyed the scenes of the Durango & Silverton.. (TNX for making us railfans and model railroders extra happy!), But, I alsoi enjoyed the 4X4 ride, and most esp[ecially seeing the moose cow and her calf! I giot to see the latter once when I was in Alaska. Seriously awesome!!! On the off-roading, there was one switchnack that reminded me of the trail to the suppit of Mustang Mountain in Nevada. May Almighty God continue to Bless, Guard, Guide, and Protect you while bringing you to even greater adventures!

Thank god it wasn’t too busy the day I drove it, as I was able to cheat a bit over the yellow line just to keep my buddy from freaking out thinking we were gonna go over the edge and into the abyss! There was a bicycle race going on however, and paying attention was a priority, so I was only able to glance here and there, so virtually missed most of the fantastic views! Coming into Ouray from the north about 8-10 miles, it looked like we were entering into one of the the kingdoms of The Lord of the Rings! It was just spectacular!

In the summer of 1990 my family and myself vacationed in Durango and took the narrow gauge railroad to Silverton. Wonderful countryside and enjoyable towns. Being a flatlander from Chicago, transplanted to Houston, driving on mountain roads was a new level of stress as I had nightmares of going over the side. I'm sure I drove the locals nuts with my slowpoke ways. Driving it in the winter would be insane, but people do it and survive. A few years ago I read that forest fires had damaged Durango and residents lost their homes. I sincerely hope they were able to rebuild. Great video as always Cat!

Beautiful video! I grew up in Silverton. Everyone should visit Copper Colored Kid's gravesite at the cemetery. It's a creepy ghost story from when we were kids. Legend has it as the railroad was being built he was caught lollygagging on the job. He then refused to sing "Camptown Races". But seriously, build-up to and after his demise are pretty twisted.

Every time I hear the San Juans I always think of our San Juans which are so much different because they are surrounded by water and are Island where Orcas like to play. The rain doesn't look like it brought any white stuff to them hills. Our rain storm on Friday & Sat was much needed and with a little clearing Sat , Mt Rainier showed her pretty face and all I can see is White . Just what the old girl needed as her Rocky face was starting to look ugly. All these years the old man's vocabulary has been used up , what more can I say that no one has said before. I just got though watching your U-tube about Silverton, Or. This brought back memories for my uncle and I camped in one of their camping areas back in the 70s. He was dear hunting and I was fishing. There was a small stream like the one you camped at and I couldn't believe the size of trout I caught in the little creek. Also, the side walks in town were still wooden. We had to pay to take a cold shower and the only beer they had was called near beer. After three days camping with snow on the ground we decided a trip into town was needed. It was night and the slushy snow got up under our motor while traveling. As we started down the Hwy grade towards town, we observed, down at the bottom of the road a County Mounty was out of his patrol car talking to someone in the car he stopped. All, of a sudden, my head lights went out and the car back fired just as we started passing the County Mounty.. The pore officer jumped over the car he stopped. We made it to town, parked in the rear of a bar and headed inside. It wasn't 5 minutes and two C.M.s came into the bar asking who was driving the car in the rear? No one knew, for we claimed we were playing pool for the last hour. Frank Jaeger

No one, save John Muir back in the day, captures the essence of being out there quite like Catherine. You can feel her heart's connection with wild places right through these sounds and images. In this otherwise insane world we find ourselves in now, this is the soul's salvation.

I think that million dollar highway could afford a guardrail! I don’t so much have a fear of heights, I just have a fear of pulmmeting to my death! Lol This area is on our radar of places to visit . Just beautiful! Be safe and always aware of your surroundings . Thanks for the adventure Cat.👍

They don’t have guard rails because it would prevent the snowplows from pushing the snow off the road in the winter.

I failed to count how many deep breaths I took watching your video. Mostly , it was due to the raw and stunning beauty, but I'll admit - I can imagine those inclines and descents along the 4X4 trail as well. I'm glad you survived and were able witness an area that is a bit less traveled. Thank you for taking us all along. Safe travels.

Thank You for filming and your channel. I used to be an avid backpacker here in Washington State. I am now unable to hike or backpack, so your channel helps me cope with the inability to do so. Beautiful footage.

I'm a fulltime RVer and a year ago I travelled through CO. Western CO impressed me very much and no town more than Silverton City. Lets just say that I started looking at RE there but the prices have already popped. It is a one horse town with a lot of kick to it. There are a couple bar & grills and coffeeshops in that main street that compare with the best the US has to offer. The whole area is just off the charts and the only thing that keeps it that way are the roads in. From Ouray in (million dollar highway) its a white knuckle drive but the other way is no day in the park either. Its back to basics and I love it. I got my coffee from that exact coffeeshop every morning and then sat out ON the street where they have chairs and tables.

We made the drive from Durango to Ouray a couple of years ago, spending the night in Ouray. We left Durango in time to see off the train and arrived in Silverton in time to see it arrive with much fanfare. That drive is so rugged and beautiful, with grand distant views and mesmerizing close-up streams and falls. Well worth anyone's time. Glad to see your take on it. ...that road up the mountain! Yikes!

I love Silverton. We were just there a week ago. Our daughter has a house by Purgatory ski resort, so Silverton is close. My brother in-law and I took some 4x4 roads by the streams and lakes between the resort and the top of 550 for some fishing. It is pretty.
