Sooo, up until 4 yrs ago. I hadn’t been there since 1977. No homemade candy the last time I went…….. bummer booooo. One of many great memories. We always stayed at the south mineral campground. In 77 the trees in the campground were 6-8 inches across. Those same trees are now 36-48 inches across. We used to catch trout in the creek and cook them in the fire at night. Firecrackers in the fire. It’s like a wood knot ( they provided the fire wood) exploding. So many fantastic memories. If you get a chance to go, you won’t regret it.

Lived in Silverton, had a store there too, sometimes it's better to keep a secret. It used to be so personal, not anymore...just another tourist trap. Love the San Juans! Just be careful for all the traffic on the trails! Make America Jeep Again!

Yep change and transition is a tough one, believe me, at age 64 I have experienced the hard truth., yet that is reality. During our 2022 visit we never felt over impacted on remote trails. Me and Michelle first arrived in Silverton on the train. It was our honeymoon, now 40 years gone. Silverton in 2022 was as fresh as it was 40 years ago. Please don't perceive my message as judgmental. Silverton is self-protecting, it's a bugger to get to!

I've been to Silverton several times, both by train (which everyone should do) and by car to rent an 4 seat ATV and travel the vast mining trails north of town. Especially the Alpine Loop! Handlebars is one of the BEST places to eat in Silverton! ...Claude

Hi Claude, there are so many wonders to experience in and around Silverton. We visit every year, doing a different activity each visit. We spent our honeymoon in Durango, during our visit we rode the train to Silverton, it was a wonderful experience, and yes everyone visiting the area should do the same. We love Silverton, thanks for the comment.

My dad and mom loved the San Juan mountains and we as a family spent many weekend trips to Silverton and the surrounding area, i have pitchers of of my bother and myself on the dirt streets of town back in the late 50's and early 60's. we lived in Salida Colorado so it was just a short day trip over there for a weekend or a week of fishing and camping. as i grew older i always made time to go there. and just hang out.

You found my favorite place. Normally we take our Jeep in our RV horse trailer. Our daughter wants us to take the horses and ride out of Howardsville. I enjoy the train ride and the Jeeping is the best I have found, I can bust my Jeep closer to home but I can’t get that scenery near home. The people of Silverton are welcoming and want to make our stay nicer. Some towns just want my money and want me gone ASAP. Silverton and the locals ask if there is anything I need, a guy offered to help me fix my Jeep one day. Most shop keepers want to talk and tell me the best places to see, in my case, snow, wildflowers and a fast moving stream. That is how we found American Basin.

The family visited Silverton in the early '70s. At that time, the main street was all dirt and had wooden sidewalks. The Federal Judge of that district was a good friend of the VP of the school where I worked. My buddies and I were on a motorcycle trip and stopped there to visit him. Was amazed when I first meet him. He looked like a mountain man sitting behind his huge oak desk. Also, the dirt street had been replaced by asphalt. We left Silverton, the road over to Oray, and rode the Million Dollar highway to a fantastic village. Just like the one's wife and I saw when we were in Switzerland.

As a teenager in 7th grade I wash dishes for the restaurant at the Grand imperial hotel. I grew up in silverton. My family moved there in 1976. They were 110 kids kindergarten through 12th grade. Some years there were no kids old enough to be seniors and we had no graduating class. My third grade teacher also taught 6th grade 3 years later. I wonder if s rock is still up on the mountain.

We went on the train from Durango in October and the town was closed. There were only 3 restaurants open to handle over 200 people so many of us didn't get lunch that day, and it was a good 10 hour ride both ways.
