Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques

    Twice I’ve pulled a $30 walmart dinghy that had a bucket and two box crabs traps that sit on a piece of plywood lashed to the thing. Tow it out behind the pontoon boat when the water is calm here in Victoria, BC. Great to snorkel off of as well. Hang a stir-up under the seat frame and step in and out easily. Cheers.

    Regarding the Rod holder. Agree with your assesment. we were on the St. Joe in September. A Colorado XTS owner is using the upper section from Scotty Rod holders, purchased longer bolts and runs them through the available holes on the forward uprights and the holes on the rod holders utilized for adjusting the angle of the holder. Brilliant and superb installation and product. You obviously don't need and can't use the Scotty base systems.

    Nice! I picked up one of these used years ago… also to fish the Yakima. I think you are on the money. Functions and floats great, good construction for the $$$. And you’re right on about the rod holder, could be better- be interested to see what you replace with. Also the storage… a bunch of small pockets, like you said. I’d spend all day packing if I split my gear up into the pockets. I see you had the flippers on… do you have much luck with fishing while floating? Never had much luck with that - always just pull over and wade. If you have a good method feel free to share it Thanks Kevin

    I've had mine for a while. I found your video searching for using the pontoon on a river. Wondering how to maneuver it in current. Wondering if I should try and paddle it or use the oars. Seems like the oars make the total footprint really big. I might need to get through tighter spots.

  • @FlyFishDan

    @FlyFishDan

    2 жыл бұрын

    You definitely will want to stay on the oars if you are in a river (safety), unless it's a very slow, near zero current. By maneuvering the oars around you can stay nimble on the river.

    Dec. 12, 2020----Reno, Nev. here and thanks for the review. There's a Cabela's on the far west side of town and I've been looking at the 2 different boats they offer, but don't remember who makes them. One thing I didn't see or hear is weight capacity. One of Cabela's has a weight limit of 250 pounds and I run 240-250 weight wise. Then add 20 pounds for gear and an anchor, how does it affect the boats handling capability? I noticed you're wearing chest waders.....what's the chance of the boat flipping in deep water and you getting to the surface now that your waders are full of water? Especially during winter time. Thanks for the video.

  • @FlyFishDan

    @FlyFishDan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello! According to the sticker on the pontoon; the capacity is 400 pounds with person + gear. I had mine weighted down with myself at 230 pounds and probably 50 pounds of gear (including my 5 pound anchor)...had no trouble at all. The boat handled great, even loaded down. I have a pretty stout wading belt that would keep water out for a time (hopefully long enough for me to swim to shore) if disaster struck. Hope that helps! Cheers!

    I'm very interested in one if these I've found used. I don't like the idea of my feet dangling in the water or having to use my feet to maneuver it around. What do you think about adding a net and or tarp between the seat and foot rests to keep feet dry? It could also double as a "catch-all" when bait or tackle ...or fish... is dropped.

  • @FlyFishDan

  • @FlyFishDan

    @FlyFishDan

    3 жыл бұрын

    It’s light enough that you can use flippers to navigate around both a lake or river with ease. Having that mobility kept me in the fishing zone during my free flows down river. The only pain in the butt was taking them off each time I wanted to fish a spot off the boat.

    @William James The not knowing why they were using flippers who’s not gonna stop me from purchasing my pontoon boat, it wouldn’t have mattered to me either way! They’re just flippers, not a high dollar Pro-Fishing Boat, Lol! As to watching videos for the know how, that’s how you found me here! I’ve watched my fair share of videos, but no one was mentioning the reason why they were using flippers. I just took a wild guess as to the reason why, and I was pretty spot on. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about taking them off and on, which is why I just decided stick with my trolling motor and Oras. Thanks for the heads up, it’s very much appreciated! 🤙🏼 🙏🏼 🙌🏼

I deflate the pontoons then just fold the ends toward the center and load up. Having a battery powered pump is a life saver. Takes about 20-30 min to get setup.

    It can handle up to class one rapids. It’s been a good watercraft up to this point, my only challenge is that the frame has a tendency to rust in places (which is a bummer)

    You bet! Typically anglers will wear a wading shoe/boot with a traction sole (felt or spikes) to keep yourself upright when fishing slippery bottoms.
