Thanks for the video! Having owned several kayaks (1 pedal hobie), 2 toons, and 1 float tube. I also fly fish lakes and rivers (Lower Owens CA), and traditional Baitcast for bass and stripers Havasu and silverwood lake. These are tips that can help enhance the video and are targeted to help people make the choice. I actually have a Pelican Fishing yak $400 (paddle only, not "hands free fishing") and toon on an 8' x 5' trailer (the tractor store $750). The Colorado XT toon had an old yamaha 2.0 that I use if I offshore to jetty's etc. Finally crapped out after 10 years of dingy and toon use. Looking at Suzuki 2.5. You have to register any Kayak, toon or whatever if it has electric or gas motor. At 1:45 I agree with the lady. She misses trolling and casting backwards in toon in stillwater. This is the real "hands free" advantage of toons over yaks. The use of fins instead of pedals, trolling motor, or kayak paddle is a big advantage. I always hear that wind is difficult in a toon. I personally think it is harder in a yak to land fish in windy conditions. I have a rear view mirror on my toon. Try it for backtrolling, you will like it. Fly Fishing from a non-pedal, non "stay in place" trolling motor, paddle only yak is not really much fun in the wind. Things get catiwampus with lines etc. I agree with lady again at 3:00. Also in that area of video he says getting around in kayak is easier. This is true. I use oars or Yamaha outboard on my toon and this is not a problem. Fly fishing and Drift fishing rivers in toon is where they really shine. The style is very similar to guided double-ended drift boat. Kayaking rivers with big heavy fish kayaks (not river kayaks which are specifically designed) is rather clunky and obviously pedal kayaks can be troublesome. The big advantage of kayaks is the Tournaments and clubs etc. and social aspects. It is a rather "hot" industry. Pedal Kayaks like Predator PDL run $2700 and new Trolling motor, stay in place, styles are around 4k. Paddle only fish kayaks are pretty reasonable starting at $400 on up. Kayak Bass fishing tournaments are getting pretty popular. They are "stand-up" style kayaks with baitcasting rods'reels', and lots of pedals and e-trollers. I am sure there are human powered fly fish only tournaments, just not as prevalent. Top of the line Fishcat Panther toon, river rated, 4 bladder is $1300. Add $500 for Gas outboard or $300 for electric. I own a quality Colorado XT paid $560. And finally, Bottom Line... Depends on where you live and style of fishing. They are pretty darn equal. IMO it is a draw. My toon is the most flexible and I love river drifting and fly fishing for trout. My paddle only kayak works a bit better in no wind situations in back bays, ocean, and stand up bassin. I can get around easier. I still love dry fly casting and trolling wooly buggers, but as I get older, I get tired of a different line for every situation and line tending management etc. I am on a bassin' binge right now with Piscifun Serpent baitcaster. So much easier for us old folks. LOL Good Luck. And finally finally weight is key..... get a light duty trailer. I tow with a four cylinder Sonoma truck. No lifting. No inflating or breakdown. No assembly of fish finder, rods etc. Keep everything in your garage and ready to go. And finally finally final good luck thanks for video.

Was going to comment on a comparison including use in rivers and found that it is covered well in this reply. I originally purchased my SS Bucks Bags Bronco many years ago to fish the San Juan, Green River, Colorado, etc... and found it works great inshore fishing as well. The stainless steel frame is bulletproof in all water so the thing seems to never age. Thank for the video, Cheers

I own both...I love to fish off the pontoon on a quiet lake...no oars, just a trolling motor. The kayak I use it where there are more streams or very shallow areas or current or rocks. More comfortable on the pontoon but the kayak is more versatile.

I have a Fishcat 9 and my daughter has a sit in kayak and there is no way I can keep up with her. I,ve never used her boat so I don't know about comfort but she likes hers.

no oars, seriously and most people have electric motors. lol both have there place and having fun what it's about

I suppose, to be fair, if you aren’t going to use oars on the pontoon, you should take the paddle from the kayak and see which is better 😉

My Colorado pontoon is faster and less drag than a kayak . The flippers and reverse killed the comparison

Hey how's it goin I'm fairly new to fly fishing and i was wondering why you pull the line in instead od reeling it? I've done the same just because I've seen others doing it so i just assume that's how it works. Does it get tangled or not really?

Hey Iron, I only use the reel on bigger fish to allow the drag to do its work. When pulling line in you can take in line quicker and have a little more control over the fish.

Have either of you caught crappie out of Willow Springs? While they are throughout the lake, I've always done well in the trees, or at the 16 minute mark of the video. As always, lots of fun watching the Rush's!

Thank you, David! I have hooked two crappie at Willow Springs but lost them both at the boat. One was a pretty good sized one and the other was about 7". I would like to go there and target them sometime though.

If you used the oars you travel fast in a pontoon boat.

Matthew James our favorite bass flies are Diamond Hair Minnows and Simi Seal Leeches. Smaller Simi Seals and hoppers work great for bluegill as well. Thank you for the question!

One hundred percent better than a kayak

Pontoon by a country mile. Especially the new ones. Pontoons are 10x more stable, more comfortable, lighter, quieter, they hold more gear they are much easier to fish out of as well as navigate,the only draw back at all if you call it that is top speed. The kayak is gonna be faster.

Electric trolling motor on the pontoon! Kayak might still be faster but you can go forward and backwards. And with a whole lot less effort.
