Cold Weather Winter Riding Tips and Tricks

Спорт

With consecutive sub-zero days here in Vermont, I thought I'd share some of the tips and tricks that have become knee-jerk choices in my every day riding when it's time to brave the elements and head outside.
From what to wear, how to keep your food from freezing, thoughts on easy bike maintenance, here are the things I do to stay warm as toast when the temperature is anything but.
Shout out to Velocio, ‪@CannondaleBicycles71‬, UnTapped, ‪@45nrth97‬, Bar Mitts, and ‪@RYOBITOOLSUSA‬.

Pro-Tip Ditch the chemical warmers and get yourself a pair of heated socks! Can last 6 hours or more depending how you set them. Keep your toes nice and warm. Rode over a 100 miles last weekend with temps in the teens and feet were warm the entire ride. Paid $80 bucks for mine and can recharge the batteries after each ride.

I've been riding at 20*F through snow with a road bike, maybe I'm doing it wrong lol! Tip for people like me, living the college life, who don't have a ton of money to shell out on dedicated gear - wear socks, wrap two plastic bags around each foot, and then a warm woolen sock over this. Then put your shoes on and some kind of wind/water resistant shoe cover. Works surprisingly well!

This is the riding for at least 6 months out of the year up here in Fairbanks AK. 45nrth boots, special poagies, nose hats, and frame bags are all pretty necessary. -20f is the normal temp we do our winter shop rides at.

Great tips. Winter shoes, toe and hand warmers and the thermal bottle are all things I use here in Connecticut. Rode 3 hours in 20 degrees last weekend. Heading to Vermont next weekend to hopefully do some fat biking.

I've probably watched over a dozen winter riding kit videos and as a Canadian this is the first that actually provided helpful info for my conditions. I've seen many (Europe focused) where they are talking about getting ready for winter conditions and its 5-10 celsius still, they aren't even wearing gloves, let a lone needing Pogies. I have some of the dual position bar mitts for my winter road bike that I am really liking. Thinking about picking up that Bar mitt water bottle insulator or a couple of them, my biggest issue is even when its not that cold the top of the bottle freezes up around the lid so you can't get anything out even before your contents turn to slush. Have been able to get by without heated socks of toe/hand warmers so far but it generally doesn't fall below -15 celsius (maybe -20 to -25 with windchill) where I am so winter shoes and socks seem to be enough.

Some extra tips from a fellow New Englander: Slip the chemical warmer under the top of your toe cover then put shoe cover over (gets just enough air to keep going). Tape up holes in road shoe soles. Windstopper base layers work wonders. Heated socks and gloves (got mine from Ororo) are saviors. Thick/insulated wraparound Velcro bandana stops glasses from fogging and covers exposed skin. Winter aeroshell helmet cover on my Lazer keeps out the wind. Phones lose battery charge faster in cold so I put mine in an interior rear pocket. Double balaclava as needed. Ski goggles instead of glasses. Anyone can Zwift inside. Hardmen (like Ted) ride all year.

I used bar mitts when I had a commute here in the PNW. Never gets colder than -10 *C here and I found all I needed was a basic full finger glove. Above 0*C (with pouring rain) I found that even a bare hand in the pogie was sometimes too warm. I've yet to use pogies on drop bars though.

that is a 500.00pair of boots! oh yeah : he is sponsored by them! Myself (3 solo winter trips across the U.S. and 40 years more worth of bike adventures) I buy used bike shoes online 3 euro sizes up and put a liner sock and a fat wool hiking knee sock over that. bread bag in between for the worst days. leave shoes a bit loose .Thermal cycling bootie over the shoes. Bread bag ( or other waterproof bag) over shoes on cold wet days. I am a coldie but this combo has never failed in any cold. Put shoes against heat vent while dressing and the warmth will be trapped by the booties. Axiom ; Clothes do not create warmth they simply hold it in. Get fully dressed, prepare bike and ride fuel then add hot shoes and hit the road immediately. Be uncomfortably hot in the indoors before you leave so no cold-ass-warm-up time.

Reynaud's is what I get when it's cold here unfortunately, and I struggle with fingers and toes once the temperature dips. In eastern England (flat fenlands) it's the windchill that is the worst thing as it only gets down to minus 5-8 degrees C on the coldest days but, in the UK, it's mostly a damp cold, which ain't nice at all for someone of 58 years old !!!. I use the chemical heat pads in my gloves and winter spd boots and some of the time it works......I do like to wear the running type baselayers with the hole for your thumbs which helps with cold wrists....and any of my winter jacket arms have to be able to sit snug over gloves..... I honestly don't know how the heck I'd get on in New England though.....I'd possibly look like Jack Nicholson at the end of The Shining !!!! Great video yet again.....and I'm seriously considering the merits of maple syrup.....Hmmm ?
