Cold Wax Collage - Process and Experiment without Oil Paint

Welcome! Today’s project is a total experiment using Gamblin Cold Wax medium WITHOUT OIL PAINT. I have never used cold wax before, so let’s see what we can do with it. I am creating a small paper collage on a cigar box lid to play with the wax. I will color the wax and add textural elements to it, and then apply the wax over the collage. If you are into mixed media, you will definitely want to get some cold wax to play with; it’s fun and there are so many possibilities for some unique works of art!
I hope you enjoy this LONG video - I just filmed while I played and then added a voice over afterwards. Scrub through to find parts that interest you if you don’t watch the entire video. Share it with your art friends - let’s get more information and experimenting going using cold wax WITHOUT OIL PAINT!
For a perfectly finished collage with cold wax, check out Denise Cerro’s video here: • cold wax
I am so happy I found this video because Denise intrigued me enough to go buy some cold wax and give it some play in the studio! I will definitely be playing with this more and more.
I’d be happy if you chose to subscribe to my channel so I can share more art videos with you. I try to share at least one a week. If you have any special requests for new projects, or questions about my processes, please leave me a comment and let me know!

I have been an artist for over 40 years, primarily painting in acrylics. Over the last few years, I have been art journaling on a daily (almost) basis, drawing graphite portraits, creating intuitive art and collage, and dabbling in watercolor.
I have tons of ideas to share and I hope by using KZread, I can gain like-minded subscribers who love some form of art and love to learn new ideas and techniques. I believe everyone can make great art!
If you haven’t already, please subscribe so you don’t miss more good ideas that I will be sharing regularly for mixed media, art journaling, collage, canvas art, watercolor and acrylic painting, and more. And since I am really trying to grow this channel, I would appreciate it so much!

Sally...I had fun watching your take on cold wax, I love your experimentation with the different mediums mixed in! I love the effect when you used it to stencil...I also liked your idea of using the furniture wax. I use the name brand Chalk Paint clear wax for chalk painting...I'm going to give it a try with artwork! Thank you too for the shout out Sally...so appreciated and kind of you. I did enjoy the video and your finished piece!

I am planning on doing more with the cold wax now that I have a bit more knowledge about it. Your video sure gave me a jump start. Now to make an actual piece of art with it! Thanks also for the sub...I appreciate that a lot! ❤️

Oh. My. Goodness. I absolutely love the look of encaustic painting. ( I don’t care for the price tag to get started, especially because it’d be an experiment for me.) I work in acrylic/water based media as well, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to incorporate beeswax....🤔 Well? Yesterday I found the Dorland cold wax, & today I found this video!! You have no idea how flipping excited I am that you experimented, played, filmed, & posted!! I absolutely am 100% intrigued by embedding things into artwork....🤓 I love layers, & scratching to expose under layers...so much fun! This is a super helpful video, and I can’t THANK YOU enough!! So, thank you. ✨🤩✨💐🌺

Thanks for watching. Glad it helped you. Dorland wax has some different ingredients and a softer texture than the Gamblin wax that I use here. You’ll just need to experiment with the Dorlands and see what works.

BettsyDoodle it won’t work with acrylics, Dee. The wax is solvent based and acrylics are water based...they don’t mix. I don’t think it would ever dry if you mixed them. But hey...try it...it’s all an experiment isn’t it?

Love this video. I am told by others that the cold wax can be used as a top layer to finish water color, acrylic or collage works. Use sort of like a matte varnish.

I sometimes use Daddy Van’s beeswax polish in my journals to prevent pages from sticking together. Use a little on a soft cloth, wait about 5 minutes and buff off. It’s also beautiful on wood and furniture. Here’s the link to that product from Amazon amzn.to/37fDqQF Thanks for watching, and for your question. ❤️

I used matte medium UNDER the wax, but not on top of it. You can use water mediums first to lay down collage or an under painting, or prime with gesso. But once wax goes down, no more water-based mediums can be used with any success.

You can varnish as you would with oils after the painting is thoroughly dry, or you can just use a soft cloth to buff the dried painting to a soft waxed sheen.

If it’s a thin layer, it will dry overnight then you can add more layers and let it dry again. You can continue to add as many layers as you want. To completely dry and cure, give it about 2 to 3 weeks before framing or shipping. Thanks for watching ❤️
