THANK YOU for Parts 1 & 2. Your step-by-step instruction makes one actually want to try to create something of this sort. Oftentimes, I just don't know how to start, but you've made everything clear. Thank you, again!
So happy they were helpful! That’s why I do this ❤️ Thanks for your support of my channel.
Thanks for the video.
Doesn't all that sand trash your bowl scraper and pallet knives?
It’s very fine sand, but I don’t put enough pressure on my bowl scraper for it to damage it. Some of my palette knives have fine scratches but it doesn’t affect the work at all.
I am wondering if you can use other inks like india ink, too or does it have to be alcohol inks and why? Thanks for your videos
Fascinating
Thank u for doing this! There is so little information on granulation medium especially with acrylic! This was very helpful! I have been very into acrylic reactions to different things so would love to hear your thoughts on any other ideas!
Thank you so much!!! This is so kind of you ❤️💖❤️
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Wow, love them all (from Oz)
This is really good artwork!
Love them
New to this medium, enjoyed watching and look forward to trying
You can buy tyvek envelopes as well. I was gifted some from a company that closed.
what is the value of using cold wax? Why cold wax and not another medium
Cold wax and oils is an art medium I enjoy using.
Very cool! Glad this video came up. I look forward to watching more and learning from you.
Hi Thanks for the sharing your experiences to us I really enjoyed learning about you and I hope I can Learn more about your techniques thanks a lot
Thanks for watching. Lots more to see in my playlists ❤️
It's so useful to have such comparison in a single video by single artist, it's definitely easier to compare how they behave. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching ❤️
Wonderful video. Very creative. I enjoyed your demo very much. I hope mine will look half as good. Thank you for sharing your art. ❤
You can do it!
Can you tint the modeling paste first?
Yes you can. Use acrylics or inks.
Can you use wax and oil mix on canvas? Also. Don’t you need to dry it before you do next layer?
Hi and thanks for watching. First, it’s not a great idea to work on a stretched canvas with oil and cold wax because the canvas has “give” and the cold wax could crack once it is fully dry. As far as layers, you can begin another layer as soon as the previous layer has set up to the point that the paint is not smearing under the palette knife or bowl scraper. That said, you decide when a layer is finished…if you don’t like what you just painted, you can move it around, add more paint, scrape paint back, etc. Once you’ve decided that layer is finished, then you wait for it to set up a bit before proceeding. Depending on the environment, this can take a few hours or a couple of days. You can add as many layers as you want, as long as you want. You could go back years later and add more layers if that’s what you want to do. It’s quite a wonderful medium to work with.
Thanks, girl! Masha's colors look so yummy, too.
Thanks for watching! The dot cards are an inexpensive way to try out her colors and they go a surprisingly long way, too.
Turned out fab! TFS Have you ever used clear gesso?
Thanks Vivian. Yes, I use clear gesso for a lot of things, but it’s really gritty so I don’t like watercolors on top of it.
What beauties you make❣️❣️❣️❣️
Wow thanks so much! ❤️
Wow! Those potraits are awesome 😮😊
Thank you so much…how nice of you to say! And thanks for watching, too. ❤️
Great work Thank you for sharing❤️🙏🏻💯🌈🕊
Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
You can get the same results by putting the ink directly onto the plate then putting the plastic wrap over the top
Yes that’s a fun way as well. Thanks for watching ❤️
Just wondering with that Stabilo All pen. I hadn’t heard of it so I clicked on your link. It says it’s a watercolour ink. Wouldn’t that work like the inktense pencils? They can’t be reactivated with water once dry. Looks like heaps of fun!
Hi Robyn, the stabilo pencil is a very waxy pencil. It is water soluble (not watercolor, per se.) It feels like a crayon when it goes down. You can leave it as is on the surface or wet it with water to blend it out. It does stay moveable with water even after it dries, which can be a drawback, so I activate it with matte medium instead and that stabilizes it so if I want to use more water based products on my project, the pencil doesn’t continue to move or smudge. Otherwise, save the addition of stabilo for the last layer of a project. A little goes a long way…the black is really strong. But it can be layered as well. I highly recommend it. There are also colored versions (white, blue, red, and brown) and a whole color set of shorter fat pencils called Woodies, which are actually intended for kids, but work the same way. I also use Inktense pencils. Those really are more like watercolor pencils that dry permanent but feel more like a lead than the stabilo, which feel more like a crayon. Hope that helps explain it, and thanks so much for watching!
@@SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist thanks for replying to my message! I’ve been binge watching you for a few days now. I bought cold wax to finish gouache then found out you can paint oils with it. Then I started searching for info and found you.. 😊
@@robynwhite5662 I’m glad that I was able to inspire you in some way. Thank you for watching.
Sally, it's a good review. Thank you!
Hi Debbie! Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate it!
This is beautiful! Are you spraying your pages with just water or alcohol?
I sprayed with water to start and at the 11:00 minute mark after I applied the ink/paint, I sprayed it with alcohol.
Love the tags and Ty for sharing :)
You are so welcome!
Too bad they don't still make that Studio 71 gesso. It is the best, most opaque gesso I have found. Nothing else comes close.
It’s a shame…Michael’s bought out Darcie Crafts who made the Studio 71 products. The Darcie company (Pat Catans) warehouse was just 20 minutes from me, and you could go in and buy wholesale there with a vendors license. I could find some of the products in Michael’s and Walmart shortly after the buy out, but I think all that stock has been depleted. It still comes up in search, but it’s all sold out. We had a Pat Catans retail location very close to me too, where I bought painting supplies since the 80s. Since Michael’s converted that store, it’s so different and really doesn’t compare for art supplies.
very informative!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
I always learn something new! Prescored box/frames in a tablet and adding more colors for depth and aging. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much. It’s always nice to hear that folks are getting some value from my videos ❤️
Beautiful. Thank you.
Thank YOU for watching!
Hi Sally, I am so happy that I bumped into your channel today 😊. With regards to your idea of using modeling paste through a stencil to make a stamp - BRILLIANT. The way to fix the one that you made that is uneven is to either rub it very gently across sandpaper until it removes enough of the modeling paste to bring it all down or do the opposite and run your sanding block gently across the surface of the modeling paste until it becomes level. I am sooooo going to be making some stencil stamps very soon. I had been toying with the idea of using embossing powders to do sort of the same thing, but your way seems simpler.
Thanks for your comment and for watching!
I don't know if it's a good idea to mix alcohol with the mineral spirits and resin in the cold wax? Did you research that first for toxicity and chemical reactions? WARNING: COLD WAX IS VERY FLAMMABLE!! DO NOT USE HEAT TOOLS ON COLD WAX!!
Thanks for the concern…both products are solvent based so it is safe to mix them. They both contain resin, and cold wax can be mixed safely with mineral spirits. So, there are no problems with mixing. The only thing I dried with the heat tool was the initial acrylic layers, not the wax layer. Thanks for watching!
Can you use gel prints for paper collage pieces?
Yes you can use any paper to embed into the wax. Thinner papers work best for me. So, if you have gel prints on tissue or deli paper those are ideal.
Love the second one! A lot more depth and interesting textures. Thank you for showing this! Do you varnish cold wax paintings with normal varnish and do you need to seal the gold leaf at all? Thank you
Janet, thanks for watching! Varnishing is optional with cold wax. You can use a good quality varnish made for oil painting, mor when the painting is completely dry (can take up to a month) you can gently rub it with a soft cloth to buff up a soft sheen. I don’t varnish or seal the gold leaf…the plain cold wax does a great job of sealing it into the painting.
Thank you very much for getting back to me - your video is very inspiring too. Thank you
What's in the spary bottle?water?
Yep, just tap water. Thanks for watching ❤
Omg these are Great! Thanks for sharing❤️
In stead of scraping the gamsol-ed dots you could also pick up the wax by pressing with an absorbing tissue paper.
You are so clever👏Always thinking a little out of the box. It’s such a treat to watch your videos. I learn something every time🥰
Hi Judith! I’m so happy you take something away from my videos! Thanks for always watching…I really appreciate it ❤️
I’m so grateful your video popped up in my feed because I enjoyed your attitude and your humor so much!! You approach art exactly as I believe we all should…. Just “try anything once and twice if you like it “…(if we can remember because I am certain I am older than you so I can empathize)… I’m sorry I can’t offer any advice because I just ordered some inks and will try when they arrive. Honestly, I watched the entire video and honestly enjoyed it. You definitely gave me ideas to try and “it’s not a big deal “ if I don’t like what I get…I can wipe it off and try a!! Plus, I won’t remember it after a day or two. Who am I kidding?? I won’t remember by supper time 😂😂😂 You are so creative and talented. I’d love to see your acrylic paintings. Your plates were so amazing!! The clear was SO COOL!! I’ve been doing oil painting and have also bought all the watercolor “stuff” but it’s completely opposite of what I’m used to doing. I’m determined!!! Blessings, Nancy Rolfe Texas
Hi Nancy! Your comment was a real treat for me. I think we are a lot the same (and I’m pretty old - let’s just say I grew up with a Formica and chrome kitchen table…LOL) I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and I’m sure you will enjoy playing with alcohol inks. I dabble in a lot of mediums, but I painted in acrylics for 40 some years and now I love doing portraits in graphite, too. Check out my playlists to see all the mediums I’m working in (excelling in…not always.) Art is play and should be joyful even if you call it a fail…otherwise, why do we spend so much money on art supplies? I also have all the watercolor stuff, but coming from acrylics, it’s so totally different that I have trouble letting it “do it’s thing.” Come visit my web site and Instagram if you’d like to see more of my art. And thank you so much for watching! ❤️
Great video! Thank you 🙂
Of course…thanks for watching ❤️
I am new to these type of projects and really enjoyed watching your progress.
looks like a fun play!
It really was!
Beautiful result
Thank you! 😊 and thanks for watching. I appreciate it ❤️
