Cold Wax and Oil Painting with Lots of Texture | Using Unusual Tools

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome! Today I am playing with the cold wax and oil paint, creating an abstract piece with a lot of texture. To create the textures, I am using tissue paper, a skewer, a Fauxy Roller from Artistic Painting Studio, and an antique wood graining roller. Some tools worked well, others will work better once this first layer of paint has set up. I will wait about 48 hours, and add more layers to this piece. I hope you enjoy watching the process!

    I really mean it.. your tutorial is excellent...i was able to follow, take notes and you even respond when someone asks a question... yes I think you do need to let people know to click on your amazon link and then they can buy something else if they wish.. I liked your idea to use Triadic colors.... so I am going to get a color wheel and check out those colors.. so many time people just don't know what colors to use and that recommendation is amazing... so I bought cold wax and a box of 6 tubes of water soluable oils by WInsor but I am going to get some Triadic colors....I have just recommended your videos to my friend.. Thank you..!!!

    Thank you Patty…you’re the best! I would love to see what you create…you’re gonna love this medium. I’d start with a pad of Arches Oil paper so you feel free to experiment and just paint or paint over if you want. Then go to panels when you’re ready. Once you get a couple under your belt, you’ll have a good idea of what it can do. I’m still experimenting and amazed at some of the things that are possible. When you’re ready for a kinda big buy, I highly recommend the book by Crowell and McLaughlin, Cold Wax Medium Techniques, Concepts and Conversations. It’s huge and covers EVERYTHING! It’s on Amazon, so you know what to do 😂❤️

    Also, you can mix colors to achieve those triadic colors too, so you do not have to buy every color. Use the color wheel to see which colors are needed to get the color you need. Check out this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/l3aptJSnfaqomLQ.html

    I loved your tutorial on cold wax.. very thorough ... I have a.question.. what kind of water soluble oil paints do you use.. I didn't see them listed on your supply list... Your tutorial was wonderful .. and had a lot of hints that I have not heard on other tutorials. like looking for the Triad colors on a chart to see what colors work together and letting the work rest when using opposite colors like red and green so you don't get mud.... wonderful!!

    Hi Patty. Thanks for watching. I’m so glad you benefited from this video. I use Windsor & Newton water mixable oils mostly, but also have some Marie’s and Talen Cobra colors. Any water mixable oils will work, and like any paint brand differences, you’ll see differences in color, pigment, and overall quality. I started with Marie’s and they are not bad and are affordable for a whole set. Sorry I didn’t include them in the list. If you choose to take a look at them, and you follow any of my material links to Amazon and then purchase something different once there, I will still get a few pennies for your referral. Thanks again for watching!! ❤️

    This is such a great explanation of your process! This may be a stupid question, but is the cold wax mixed in your paint from the very beginning or do you add it later? I really want to try this! Thank you!

    You mix cold wax with the oil paint before you start. Then you paint with the mix. No more than a 50/50 mix…you can use less wax to make the paint more opaque. The wax does matte down the sheen though. Check out my cold wax playlist for more videos and info. It has a bit of a learning curve, but it’s a really fun process to experiment with.

    How do you clean your vintage rolling tool? I have a really nice rolling tool that I sent was for doing wallpaper prints. I don’t want to ruin it. So perhaps the water soluble oils would be better than using the regular oil paint with cold wax, right? Sorry I am a newbie with this! Thank you for the great video.

    I use 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean all my tools. Works like a charm. You can also use Gamsol, but that gets a little pricey for cleaning tools. If you want to use a vintage tool, especially if it is wood, rub a little baby oil into it after you use the alcohol to “condition” it. Just a little. Hope that helps.

    Your using black now, are you thinking composition?

  • @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist

    @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist

    Always thinking composition…right from the start, even if it’s an abstract. With each addition of color, composition is in mind. But, with cold wax and oils, it’s always changing u til the final layers.

    Anybody know who started calling the Fine Liner bottle an "oiler boiler"? And why?

  • @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist

    @SallyVanNuysMixedMediaArtist

    3 жыл бұрын

    Judi Lynn they are pretty much the same depending on the brand. Although the actual “Fineliner” bottles have the needle in the cap. Oiler boilers don’t have that. Gaunt Industries sell most Oiler boiler bottles and it might be that they coined that term...idk for sure. I have both and use the fine liners for paint and the Oiler boiler with the 18 ga needle for dropping Gamsol on cold wax and oil paintings.

    Water soluble, or mixable, oils work fine with cold wax. That’s pretty much all I use because you don’t need solvents for clean up. They clean up with soap and water.

    Hi, I was wondering the same thing. I heard you could not use water soluble oil paint with cold wax. With other techniques, such as putting the oil and cold wax over acrylic or collage, could you still use the water soluble paint with cold wax? So you don’t use any other medium with it?
