Coilover mounts in under 15 minutes... (of video!) [Super DUkota pt. 8]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We're back! This episode gives a general how-to for building coilover mounts for a solid axle swap. Shocks I have here are Fox 2.0 coilovers with remote reservoirs.
We are starting with bare frame rails- see previous build episodes for how I cleaned off and modified the frame of our 2002 Dodge Dakota SLT 5.9L 4x4. You can also see how I swapped in the Super Duty Dana 60 front and Sterling 10.5 rear.
From there, we make some frame mounting points for our coilover hoops, and then make the hoops themselves once we figure out our clearances and measurements. I am using the Rogue Fab M600 in this video.
With the hoops made, we needed to get them placed in a way that the shocks and the hoops avoid tire contact. This took a lot more time than it shows in the video because I had to articulate the axle fully on both sides with the tire tucked completely on one side and drooped on the other side, as well as with the steering cycled both ways to verify everything would clear in all situations. For my mockup stage, I removed the gas charge from the shock so it could be cycled by hand without needing the weight of the vehicle to compress it.
After tacking the hoops in, I made a cross bar that would strengthen the hoops and prevent them from moving under the weight of the truck. After getting the tube mounted between the hoops, I cut out the center section. This allowed me to weld some flanges in to make the cross bar removable. This was mainly for access to the engine and would allow for it's removal if ever necessary.
We then figured out our shock mounting points. I could have just used some universal shock tabs but they didn't quite fit the way I wanted. Instead, I used a scrap piece of steel from my time as a Ruffstuff specialties employee and used that for a much more interesting (and complicated) shock mount. Turned out cool though!
Lastly, we mounted our coilover reservoirs and did all the finish welding. This truck is finally back on it's own weight!

Great to see some progress on the Dakota !! I still have some work to get done on my Ram 1500 Superduty axle swap before it’s trail-worthy , but it turned out pretty decent and I drive it enough to keep the batteries charged . Keep up the good work
