Taker was actually the first anti hero, remember when he got over against Hogan the crowd cheered like crazy and Hogan was the golden boy

Actually Jake Roberts was before Taker. Jake was so good as a heel and the DDT was so over, they chanted DDT instead of Hogan.

Taker is right not to count himself in the 'bad guy but a face' discussion. He pretty much transcended heel-face dynamics, when they tried a standard heel run with him it didnt really work. Part of what made him so valuable in the 00s was they could work anyone against him and it made sense whether they worked heel or babyface

  • @mattm7798

Yeah, when he was a face, he was a face. He wasn't really an Austin type anti hero per se. He was just a dark hero. He turned full face on Jake Roberts which lasted until the end of the 90s when he turned back heel. Then returned as a face and apart from a short time as a heel when he was the AB, was a face the rest of his career.

The only time Taker was truly the target of the chase was the streak. An accolade greater than any title, and only he could be in that position. Holding a championship was never the focus of the Undertaker. Being the threat to champions, the monster pursuing the target, that was what Undertaker was best suited for.

The Undertaker was one of those guys that didn't need a belt. On the exact opposite side of the spectrum is guys like Roman Riegns, who need the belt to elevate them. They are rare generational talents that can actually elevate the belt instead of vice versa. Kudos to Mark !

At some point the crowd will turn on Cody and WWE will, IMO, force Cody to lean into it and turn heel, which is what AEW should have done. But until then, having an old school babyface is refreshing. I agree Malakai/Allistair Black has so much potential with HHH pushing him, he could be the next Bray Wyatt/UT.

I still remember being 13 years old and seeing the Undertaker for the first time on tv. By then I was put on to how wrestling was “predetermined “ so the awe factor was gone and nothing like when I was 7,8,9 years old. BUT the Undertaker did that for me. Walking to the ring with brother love leading the way. I won’t forget it. It’s the last time I stopped what I was doing to watch a match. I was heading out the door to meet up with my friends downstairs to play football. But I stopped and watched. The music, the slow walk. OLD SCHOOL OFF THE ROPE. Jeez. That’s the Undertaker to me. The last time wrestling and a wrestler awed me. Thank you Taker!!

I mentioned this on a Cody Rhodes video, in response to someone saying that his reign probably wouldn't last. I feel Rhodes truly is at his best when he's the chaser, abeit for a different reason than 'Taker, as Cody is an underdog.

I definitely think they’re setting up a long term Cody Rhodes heel turn after he defends the championship for at least a year. I also think they’re setting up Roman Reigns for a huge face turn. The Bloodline is already taking new form, and when Reigns comes back he’s either going to get rejected by The Bloodline - making way for Solo Sikoa to raise to the next level - or he’s going to abandon The Bloodline.

Randy Vs Cody could easily be a Mania match bcz of the history. Maybe even a Wrestlemania 41 night 1 main event. A feud like that shouldn’t be wasted on a b tier ppv. Shouldn’t be on anything less than summerslam. Cody should lose the championship to Randy At mania 41 , then he wins it back at the next summerslam after that , and then Gunther dethrones him at the next mania after that. Idk what they’ll do tho.

The crowd will definitely turn on Cody... and probably sooner rather than later (depending on who he's working against)... and Cody COULD make a great heel, as long as he doesn't do it in a clichéd or cheesy way - like Matt suggested. I think Cody should lean into the "American Nightmare" name, make his hair black again, go for a darker look, and become something resembling a sinister comic book villain, but without going into Stardust over-acting mode... Keep it cool, keep it authentic. Think Sting becoming The Crow, rather than Cody becoming Stardust. Less is more. Which is important to remember, because Cody has a tendency to over-act, and then it comes across as lacking authenticity. But what I would really love to see BEFORE Cody turns heel is for him to face some kind of insurmountable challenge again - either from Roman Reigns and the bloodline coming for revenge, while Cody's friends desert him, OR Brock Lesnar returning - and then, to help even the odds, the original Goldust returns (not comedy Goldust, creepy psychological Goldust who we saw before the censors got involved)... making gritty vignettes quoting movie lines, playing mind-games with Cody's opponent, making suggestive advances (another mouth to mouth scene!?), being generally controversial and pushing the boundaries, with the purpose of distracting and unnerving Cody's opponent... - [this could also be a way to introduce a new male or female 'physical specimen' to the WWE as Goldust's bodyguard (he'll need protection!)] - ...But then, just as Cody triumphs over the Bloodline/Brock with Goldust's help, Goldust turns on Cody... his jealousy and lust for gold overcoming him... setting up a bitter feud and bloody match (or series of matches) with his brother. But not any match - a retirement match! Which everyone will expect Goldust to lose... but he doesn't - Cody loses! And Goldust wins the gold! To the shock of everyone... WTF!? But the next Monday Night on RAW, while Goldust celebrates, HHH comes out and demands a rematch that very same night due to Goldust's revealed cheating... And later we see Cody arrive at the arena... but then we see a shady figure leaving Cody's locker room without Cody's knowledge... and this story goes on... but I'll only complete it when WWE employs me as a writer!

Nowadays it's always gotta be through fans doing quick 180s around wrestlers and then we get the same promo every single time "You People Turn On Me This" and "You People Turn On Me That". Randy Savage never had people turned against him when he turned heel or Steve Austin or Randy Orton for that matter. They come naturally. @@NiteHuntRick It still happens. And not everyone turned when the fans turned on them, like Cena... even though he probably should've (and by the stories I heard, plans were so advanced for him to turn that he already had his new outfit designed). Cody also didn't turn in AEW when they started booing him. As for your terminology: isn't a "natural"/organic turn when the crowd turns on you, and you just go with it? With a surprise/shock/unnatural turn when it happens unexpectedly (such as Seth Rollins turning on the Shield)? Anyway, the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour... and in the very recent past a certain age group of fans turned against this exact incarnation of Cody Rhodes in AEW. And there are already segments of that demographic who booed him against the Rock in the WWE. So his popularity is on thin ice.
