Coast Guard vs Rough Seas... Checto Bar

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On November 16, 2009 A pair of 47' foot Coast Guard lifeboats were filmed doing rescue manuvers at the Checto River Bar entrance during rough seas. Wave heights were close to 11' feet at the river bar entrance. The coast guard also deployed a dummy during the rescue training. You'll see it during the slow motion section of the video this is NOT a dead body like some might think.

    The excellent harbor RV park has the best views of this action from the beach front seawall. Check Ore cams. Coast Guard base is right next to the park. During year of 'the Storm of the Century' Miss Sarah (90ft) was lifted and put on top of the Jetty. Captain reversed gear powered her buried stern and back off the Jetty. Scott's picture of the event is famous, available from local newspaper he runs. CHETCO is the correct name of the river. The Salmon runs are excellent as well as crabbing. :>)

    Brooking's harbor cam shows the Chetco river mouth between the jetties. CG station is to the left. They have not let the cam update since a wooden fishing boat was stuck on those rocks for a long period of time and destroyed during removal. 'Miss Sarah', a large trawler was lifted up and onto the jetty while entering the harbor during a storm few years ago. Picture taken by local news editor/photog is famous, as she buried her stern while backing off those rocks.

    I was stationed at Chetco from 1990-1992 as the Engineering Chief Petty Officer. Back then it was 44 MLB's. The new, faster 47-footers make it look so much easier! The surf zone South of the jetties was always nasty, so that's where we did all our surf drills. Nice video!

    @giovadeo It's a stuffed dummy... usually filled with foam. They call it 'Oscar' and it's used to man overboard drills. In seas like that it's difficult to 'keep station' to maneuver alongside for the pick-up. Reminds me of the old days when I was in, but we had the 44ftrs. Had a blast at Cape D !

    That "quiet spot" is about 20ft. from the jetty and all the rogues go there. I've been there and seen it. It takes a lot of skill to maintain station keeping in that spot. When the ocean is in turmoil at the Chetco bar, there's no place safe accept the commercial basin. These guys are awesome in video, more awesome in real life...

    @K4ziq Just so you know, thats a training dummy. You can see them throw it into the water at 0:25. They throw them in to simulate a civilian in the water. They do this during rough seas for maximum training realism. It's just a training exercise. You can see him floating by at 0:46 in the middle of the screen. (My cousins in the Coast Guard and I got to watch them do this exercise after taking a tour of the boats. (;

    @OregonBoysVideo Puking is the last thing you think about, You try not to think about how you can easily get hurt, and just try to keep going with or against the waves. I remember I was out in about 5 foot seas, and I thought it was going to be fine. Suddenly my motor dies, and wont start. At that point your heart just drops, and you can't really stop the boat from turning side ways. Luckily I was able to switch to a new gas tank quickly and restart the engine.

    It is my understanding that, in training school, if you end up rolling over one of these 47 foot self bailers, you just failed the course. Another poster mentioned where both rescuers and rescued got tossed out of one of these boats when it rolled. I'll presume that's why one never wants to roll the boat, much fun as it may look at first glance.

    The name of the guy who went overboard at 0:26 is Oscar. It's a training dummy that you use for man overboard drills. No matter where you go, it'll always be called Oscar because onboard a cutter you'll fly the Oscar flag whenever a man overboard is reported.

    Well, the video description does say this: "The coast guard also deployed a dummy during the rescue training. You'll see it during the slow motion section of the video this is NOT a dead body like some might think." Sooo... I think its OK. The point is that this is a good place for training: the weather is good, and once past the inlet, the seas are calm; the only reason there's nasty waves right here is because the river is dumping into the ocean while the tide is coming in.

    At 1:41 there's a cool moment when a 47 is backed into a quiet spot that is isolated from the rough waves. Probably the instructor was trying to make a point that even though bar conditions were rough, there was a semi-safe haven nearby to which a rescued vessel could perhaps be towed to safety.
