Coast Guard hazardous seas...Humboldt Bay
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
On October 22, 2009, Hazardous rough seas and a large ocean swell impacted the Pacific Northwest Coast. Two Coast Guard lifeboats were filmed doing training manuvers during this large wave event. There was also two tow in sufers out along with their jet ski campanions. The ocean wave heights were close to 18 feet. The video was shot at Humboldt Bay bar entrance in Eureka California October 22, 2009.

I am in Alaska and love my trips to Kodiak just to watch the USCG in action. You guys are amazing.
I was stationed there in 2007/2008 as a non-rate. Was even lucky enough to be a crewman during two boat training in the surf. It’s amazing the force you feel in those MLBs as the wave hits the bow and you’re left using every ounce of strength to hold on despite being clipped in to the boat. Good times!
Nostalgic. I lived in Eureka for about six years and used to ride my bike out to the location depicted in this video.
I sailed the whole west coast In winter I go to port and avoid these conditions Those are the 47’ MLB manned life boats of the coast guard doing heavy surf training Awesome surfing in the video
Thought I'd impart a little CG knowledge here. A cutter is any vessel over 65' in length, also you can identify the length of any CG vessel under 100' in length by the 1st numbers on it's hull.
I was at the north jetty that day!!! pretty cool!
I enjoy watching. Thanks
The funny thing is that I was out on the entrance to the bay on the day this was being filmed.
Excellent video ! 5***** I was wondering when you were going to upload more videos
It's not like what it use to be. ;-) We could have been so lucky to have dry suits back in the day. Remember PIW recovery when there was about a inch or so of ice on the water and we wore those leaky neoprene suits. Thrashing around in the water made for an excerlating experience!
Correction again. Motor life boats. Cutters are 65 feet and larger. The 'cuda in eureka is a cutter.
In keeping with a Coast Guard theme, I couldn't help but notice: A story in the Virginian-Pilot by LaurEN KING published on NOV. 1, 2009 says: "The Coast Guard is scheduled to begin a commercial fishing safety effort today to coincide with the start of the cold-weather season, which brings rougher seas. The Coast Guard will send boarding teams and dock-side examiners to check safety equipment through the cold-weather season, which ends APRIL 30.
@sharkyeed, these are self righting boats, they are made for this stuff... Source: fathers 32 years in the USCG
That was badass!
Shows you the power of those waves.
Thanks. Great video BTW
The Pacific Ocean currents off Northern California come straight south from Alaska. In addition to the high waves, there is a strong rip tide, treacherous undertow and the water is freezing cold. It takes a special kind of stupid to go out into that water with nothing more than a fiberglass board or a little jet-ski.
that was a good video! NICE
he he nice video taken from the north jetty here in samoa across the Humboldt bay from Eureka
I love the 47's, but my true love is for The Triumph. If you know anything about the Pacific, you'll know what I mean.
playin in the surf, you guys ever here the name,mc'adams....lookin em up..legend,cg.surf trainer.
This next tidbit may only interest those who grew up watching TV in the 1980s, but it's ironic that the Coast Guard's cold-weather season ends APRIL 30, since the date is the birthday of two stars of the NBC series "Riptide". In keeping with a COASTAL theme, the show, created by FRANK LUPo, featured Cody ALLEN (Perry KING) and Nick Ryder (Joe Penny) as two former army buddies who decided to open the Pier 56 Detective Agency (later known as the RIPTIDE Detective Agency) in Los Angeles.
that was sick!
Every year at least one tourist thinks to get an up close view by standing on wall of the North Jetty (or what's left of it after years of being pummeled by the ocean) and gets wept off and bashed to death on the rocks. One year a guy parked his pickup by the wall with his kid and let waves crash over the wall and his pickup. After a few of those he drove off in his future rust bucket.
They are designed to take a hit on the side and be "pitched-polled" (flipped end over end). A lot was learned from the previous surf boats, mostly the 44footer. Want to see what happens when it takes a side roll? Search on "USCG 47ft MLB KZread". No good boat driver wants to take a side hit but it doesn't take much google searching to see they can take one and keep going. And yes, they are designed to ride like a cork. the 52footers slice/power through it. Search 52ft motor surfboat. Enjoy
"Riptide" also starred Thomas edWARD "Tom" BRAY as helicopter pilot Murray 'Boz' Bozinsky. BRAY was born APRIL 30, 1954 and will turn 56 when the Coast Guard's cold-weather season ends on 4/30/10. Perry FIREstone KING, who played Cody ALLEN on the show was born APRIL 30, 1948 and will turn 62 when the cold-weather season ends. Thomas edWARD "Tom" BRAY is unrelated to NFL wide receiver BRAYlon edWARDS, despite the 4413 primary school & edWARDS playing in CLEVELAND where there's HOPKINS Intl'
What is the music? Nice tune!
Surfers: no life vest...no radio....no $2 million dollar boat. Just your everyday waterman who can read the Ocean unlike no other.
I’ve seen the Coast Gaurd fail to many times on the Great Lakes.
This reminds me of the scene from Happy Gilmore where he is standing in the batting cage just taking it on the chest
The only branch id want to join
All I can fiind for Pierre Langer is where you can purchase the rights to his music. I DJ some hockey and would like to use this song. How did you get it.

Yep.. LIke this guy. Sion Milosky Dies: Legendary Big-Wave Surfer Drowns At Mavericks Beach. Being cocky will kill you dead. Fear will save your life. I kid you not. Those guys with a vest, radio and 2million dollar boat RESPECTS the sea and they fear it. It what makes them good at what they do. However, I wouldn't want to say the same about Sion. Nuff said.
o.m.g. My daughter got her orders for Humboldt Bay after bootcamp graduation Jan 22, 2010.

I have a yamaha ...not a sea-poo. FX HO takes 6-8 footers on Lake Erie just fine as long as you keep the tail down.
they're*
wow, guess if they get caught broadsided there done!
@msfootball66 - surf boarding? LMAO
Who said this video was being compared to Hawaii? Last time I checked the description there is nothing in there that says"These are the biggest waves on the west coast". Blah Blah Blah... It says a large ocean swell impacted the Pacific Northwest Coast. So obiviously your comment shows your ignorance and your lack of reading the description.
