I’m Tejano, but I took a DNA test and found that most, if not all, of my native ancestry comes from Southern Texas and Northern Mexico. It’s really cool to hear about the history of my ancestors. I wish I knew more and grew up with more information, but it’s nice to know about what I can now

I encourage all Mexican Americans (especially those who are from the Southwest) to explore their DNA. Most people are surprisingly ignorant to the fact that most Mexican peoples are mestizo. Meaning they have Native American Indian heritage in addition to Spanish/Portuguese heritage. We are a mixed Native people. We are Native American just like our Native brothers/sisters throughout the USA/Canada.

More that 60 years ago I dove into the San Marcos River. Gin clear and 72 degrees year round. I have hovered above the source of those waters and peered down at San Marcos springs - sands waving and boiling around big boulders - the source itself - the spring. The tails of giant catfish sticking out from beneath the big boulders. I was a boy and did not know the Coahuiltecan creation story. I swam in the San Marcos almost every summer day. On a few very special days I road the glass bottom boat that hovered over the springs. It was a most magical thing for a little boy to see! A wonderful way to be created. I wish I had been there at the beginning.

Even if it takes 30 years to be federally recognized, the process needs to be started for future reconnecting natives. I wonder how the early migration patterns brought the Coahuiltecans into that region of the world. The way she described the underworld and the way the ancestors followed deer and birds to a water source leads me to think that they came from a desert area with little to no resources (such as the chihuahua desert or the Llano estacado region) then followed animal migration patterns to the plentiful resources in the hill country region and edwards aquifer supply. Has there been research into this connection? Seems like there’s validity to the story in regards to migration patterns

The comanche were nuisances to the us and mexico, so that might have irritated the us with local tribes. Nonetheless, i find it ironic so many politicians meltdown about immigrants from border cities yet their ancestors lived in the area longer than they did lol and were ejected often illegally via destroying land rights.

I took the ancestry dna test, and it liked me to northwestern Mexico and southwest texas specifically northern coahuila and eagle pass were I live. And the thing that I noticed is that coahuila state name form Mexico has the coahuiltecan name on it. And 40 minutes from eagle pass we ha e a small town called carrizo springs also coahuiltecan territory. So am wondering, coahuiltecan people are still alive In Their former territories, they just forgot about their culture.

I took a DNA test to see where in Europe my ancestors came from and to my surprise my ancestors mainly come from north eastern Mexico and southern what is now Texas. I love learning about this but it makes me sad to know Texas doesn't even recognize our people as a tribe or group of people n e more even though our ancestors are buried outside the Alamo and helped build it.

My mother always said we were metiso and from Texas, not Mexican (Mexican is a citizenship anyhow) but she didn’t even have much Spanish blood either and born blonde with blue eyes. She did have many native features though. Anyhow I didn’t believe her and then found out from DNA that we are actually from Texas. She lived in Reynosa and was mostly likely born there. But that our tribe was genocide by Spanish and whites. The ones that survived are my ancestors. My mother was actually about half coahuitecan. But what happened? How did her ancestors survive? Did they hook up with the Navajo then moved into Mexico and mixed with white etc.... how do I find my tribe? Are there any of their traditions left? Are we a lost tribe? This definitely explains some Innate things about myself and the weird herbal/magical things my mother did. I also danced most of my life and found happiness in that. But it’s sad that my tribe was lost thus so.

Yeah. Not really understanding how people claim to be “Mexican “ that were never a citizen of Mexico. Mexican is not a race. My real last name is De La Cruz half Spanish/Portuguese. Majority of the rest is indigenous to south Texas. My family has been in Texas and fought against the Mexicans in the Texas fight for independence. See Placido Benavidez. Related to him on my father’s mother’s side. We have been Texans for several generations but ignorant people refer to Latinos in south Texas as Mexican I take offense to that. My family believes we are Lipan Apache. I have uncles that are in their seventies and look totally Native American. I need help finding out. If anyone has suggestions
