Close passes spoiled the day

We were searching for a new route. It turned out to be a Curate's Egg of a day - good and bad in parts! It turned out even worse for the two drivers now being prosecuted!

    That video was very welcome. I've just had a shower after getting soaked on my ride. It's the third time this week so a sit down, a cup of tea and a warm up was just what I needed. I'd prefer drier and less windy weather but getting on my bike is like a tonic to my mood so I don't regret going. Close passes are so dangerous, a pothole in the road and you've nowhere to go. I hope they get prosecuted . If only there was a way to make these idiots have to ride a bike for a month they may see why their thoughtless actions are so dangerous. It's strange but when you're in your teens you take risks that in older life you'd think twice about doing. I guess when you are young you feel invincible. Thanks for taking us on your ride.

    gorgeous country..... especially in the first half.... exactly my cuppa... rather have the sun limning those green leaf-canopies than Autumn colours (harbinger of Winter after all) , and some ferns, some firs..... and the view..... I like a view, me. what was the elevation of that spot overlooking Nottingham and the "new bypass"? shuddered at the woman walker in pink, crossing roads without looking around just to check on traffic, even if the lights were on her side as it were (but there's a lot of it about). a true Roy-and-Wendy ramble.... very nice! thanx to both.....

    Good ride Roy and lovely forests, shame about the busy roads and paths. Totally agree with you about driver awareness and I use a handlebar camera now after many close passes and a friend being deliberately knocked off by a hit and run driver. Broken pelvis and other injuries as a result. Stay safe .

    Many familiar roads there. I ride along the Gunthorpe cycle path several times a week, it’s busier midweek. Usually quiet on a Sunday but busier later in the day. Many of those busy roads can be avoided with a bit of local knowledge. The view you can see from Gedling country park is of Gedling Village and Carlton/Mapperley, though you can see south over the river as far as Cotgrave and Kinoulton Top. Some of those off road forest tracks look interesting. I’ll have a look at your Strava to see exactly where went.

    Proud to have you along, Roger. I would expect the first one to get a warning and the second the option of points or a driving course. Either way they, and the friends they complain to, will probably be more careful in future. The third one that I didn’t record received a blast from the horn of a following van driver who saw what happened. The van driver clearly waited until they were well past us so we didn’t think they were admonishing us, which we appreciated.

    Looks as if you both had a great ride. You mentioned about the fun of finding new routes. I sort of feel the same when I discover a new neighborhood to ride in. Not exactly as exciting as finding new pathways thru forested areas but it works for me. 😉 So you're expecting a birthday. 🎉 I'll send b-day wishes to you now. Have a happy birthday 🎂. 😊 This ride of yours on 10/8/23 was only two days past my own birthday. The older I get, the more I appreciate every year I get. Wendy, don't let Roy bully you into stopping singing! I'm on your side. 🤜🤛 👍

    Looked like a lovely ride - apart from the close passes. I'm afraid driving like that seems to be par for the course where I am down in Surrey, particularly scary when there's a vortex that pulls you. Did you ever get a cafe stop in, or did I miss it? Stay safe.

    We did. We stopped at one in the park with the lake. It was quite unremarkable so I didn’t include it 😀 my son lived in Surrey for some time and I cycled there with him a few times, so I know exactly what you mean. It was certainly worse than here.

    Roy, great ride, venturing into my local area of Sherwood Forest / Blidworth so I was tryiing to work out the routes you took. It would be great if you could mention locations, especially when passing by village signs (bit of a blur when passing at speed). I use Komoot and Wahoo Bolt, a link to map or route would be really nice to see.

    Great video respect your two, how do you report close pass to police? is they a web site?

  • @RideWithRoy

    @RideWithRoy

    8 ай бұрын

    Yes, it’s very simple to do, in most areas. This is the portal for Notts police www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/ro/report/rti/rti-beta-2.1/report-a-road-traffic-incident/. Most come under ‘Operation Snap’ run by Nextbase. Some forces let you upload footage immediately while others consider your report first and then send a link for the upload, if they believe a prosecution is likely. It’s worth noting that the majority of reports are made by drivers and not cyclists.

    Who has priority , I am going down a steep narrow country lane on my bike and a car coming up ? I am clipped in on the pedals and had to fall into the hedge, got a load of verbal off the car driver.

  • @RideWithRoy

    @RideWithRoy

    8 ай бұрын

    I would say that neither has a legal priority but the car driver should have taken extra care as you were the more vulnerable road user. I’m pretty sure that if you’d have had video evidence the driver may have been prosecuted for driving without due care. I hope that hedge wasn’t too prickly.

    Enjoyed the video as always, including the background music which gives it an air of serenity, unfortunately incidents like the close passes do spoil things a bit, I very much agree with your sentiments regarding the use of footage to educate rather than being vindictive, I recently bought the Garmin 715 rear radar/camera as I was getting some nasty close passes but bizarrely since fitting it I haven’t had a single incident. I am looking to add a front camera when finances allow and undecided between the very expensive Fly 12 sport or the new Chilli pro you are currently testing so looking forward to your experience with it and subsequent review.

  • @RideWithRoy

    Thanks, Peter. I hope to get the camera review completed in the next week or two. I must do the opposite to you and get a rear facing camera. Interesting you don’t get close passes since fitting the Garmin, It’s not as if drivers will recognise that you have a camera fitted. Still I am sure you are thankful for not being placed in danger. I’ve had the opposite experience - close passes had all but stopped until I started testing the Pro 1 😀
