Cleaning and lubricate slow gear in Rollei 35__________Motion_Lapse_film

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's "easy" to disassemble the Rollei 35, just take care when putting back the little lockpin correct in right place, beside the viewfinder. And remember there are 2 small brass washers under the big flat knob that thighten the filmadvance gear.
It's only nessesary to drop a drop of clean gasolin in the upper part of the gear, and advance the camera few times, WAIT a minute and then put a tiny drop of fine oil in the upper part of gear, because it's most of the time that's the part that need it... :-)

    Thanks for the helpful video. Mine had the issue already mentioned in the comments. The speeds below 1/30s were slow and sometimes acting like the bulb setting. Took the camera apart, lubed those fuckers up, and the shutter speeds are now much more true.

    Great video! I followed your procedures for the SE version and it is the same, except that you must remove the battery release button on the back of the camera and you do not need to remove the shutter release button on the top of the camera. Also, for reassembling the rewind button, as it's a little difficult to see in the video: Insert mechanism in with the flat side facing the retaining pin. Once in, turn the piece 90 degrees counterclockwise and install the switch in the non-rewind position. Alternatively, once in, turn the piece 90 degrees clockwise and install the switch in the rewind position (as in the video).

    Thanks Aaron, the shutter release button stays on the top cover. Yeah it's a little difficult to see in the film about the rewind button, but you are right how you decribe the way to put the pin in the mechanism, because some times it can be a little difficult. Cheers Kenneth

    hey Mike, super helpful video thank you kindly. I was just wandering about the black square that sits above the battery on the upper right of your camera. I have a 35S and in mine there is an exposed bit of what I think looks like a contact thing?? did you tape yours down or are the two models different. Should I tape mine down? also, what kind of batteries do you use for the light metre in lieu of the mercury?

    In mine, the film reel to the left (when viewing from behind) is incredibly difficult to turn, and the film breaks on rewind. The film sprocket gears move freely when the rewind lever is up as expected, but the reel does not. I've tried putting a very small amount of different oils (3 in 1, silicone, and plain mineral oil) to try and loosen the reel, but it's still stubborn. Any idea what's going on?

    It's compass for making circle's on metal, also called a "Walking Stick". You can get them in many different size', but buy the good quality they are more riggid and will last much longer. I have grinded it so it fit perfect in the small holes in the shutter advance knob.

    I have a Rollei 35SE with the speeds under 1/30th of a second stuck on B, do you think this will help? Also, the lens is stuck on the "out" position. What is the second liquid you used? Thank you!

  • @mikeno62

    @mikeno62

    Hi Sebastian The most commen failure with those old camera and also this one is, that the slow gear gets dry and sometimes stuck in the movement. So the best and "simple" thing is to open the camera and clean the slow gear with a LITTLE amount of lighter fluid, do some movement with the slow gear, and then let it stay a few minutes, after that use just small drops of Sewing Machine oil, that is VERY THIN, that is the second fluid I use. Do not over oiled the gear, less is better. When the slow gear gets stuck, you can not advance the film or put in the lens. REMEMBER..., NOT take off the gear wheel under the film advance lever, because it's sometimes difficult to get the round spring under the BLACK gear wheel into right position. Another thing that sometimes gets stuck, is the little plastic tap inside the camera from the back of the lens, you can see it when the lens is in the outer position. It locks the lens in the outer position, and therefor it's only possible to get the lens collapsed or take it out when the film is advanced. Hope it will help :-)

    Hi Mikeno, I love your video! While cleaning my Rollei 35 which had slow shutter speed issues I have encountered a much bigger problem. Somehow now the shutter wheel is disengaged from the needle in the exposure meter, it also runs only from 1b to 1/60 and the shutter now runs always at the same speed no matter which one I select. I can see that below the shutter speed wheel there is a mechanism that should be engage....... however I'm stuck as I do not know really what to do or how to gain access under the shutter dial wheel. Any tip? Have you encounter such issue? Any new video on how to solve this?! Thanks Daniele

    I've done a fair amount of camera and lens CLA. I have a Rollei 35S and have cleaned the gears and fixed the meter. When I was checking the speeds, I noticed that the slow speeds do something odd: for example, when you fire the shutter on 1/2, if you hold the shutter button down it will run 1 second. If you are on 1/4 and fire the shutter and keep your finger on it it will run out 1/2 second. If you fire the shutter with EITHER speed, but pull your finger from the shutter button it will close the shutter, just as it would on B. This behavior happens on any slow speed under 1/30th but I wonder if thats only because thats where it's noticeable. Do you have any idea what could cause this? Surely this is not how it should work? Everything else seems to work fine.

    well CthulhuOO7, I have not so much experience in the small Rollei 35S, but what i found out with working on the other Rollei 35, is that the slow gear make a lot of the problems that have related to shutter problems. Another problem could be that the aperture system / ISO wheel wich is, via small arm's are connected to the slow gear settings, so, try to change the setting on the Aperture / ISO wheel just to see if there is any change, related to the shutter wheel... Just an idea. Cheers Kenneth

    +James Wait Well, it could be the slow gear that blocks the shutter sequence, so it's not fire when press the button. It's a common fail in this camera, most of the time it helps to clean the slow gear with a few drops of Lighter Fluid ("Zippo" or so..), but of course there can be other mechanic problems. Take a look inside the back of the lens, there are some plastic parts that sometimes get stuck. (just some ideas..) Cheers Kenneth

    Hi Ambrose, when disassemble the Rollei 35 you have to take off the top cover, and to do so, use a compass lever or a sticky rubber tool to take off the big round disc that's over the film advance lever, REMEMBER the 2 small brass washer (also when assemble again), then take off the film advance lever BUT, do NOT take off the big gear theeth wheel!!!. Next, take off the push button, that use to unlock the lens. Next on the back of the cover, unscrew the slotted screw and take off the little arm beside the viewfinder, and take out the little pin, you have to turn it a ca. 180 degree to get it out..., remember how it was sitting, when taking off, the flat side has to facing away from the viewfinder, when taking out and putting back again. Next, the little slotted screw on the backside of the cover, and the 2 small screw's on each side of the cover. NOW, it's time to take off the cover... First thing to do after you did that is, putting back the film advance lever and the big disc with the 2 brass washer's. You shall now look for the slow gear that sit in the front of the camera, right beside the viewfinder, i give it some small drop's Lighter Fluid at 4:34 to loosen up the old oil. You will probably find, that the slow gear when you do some movement, it will free up the shutter. THAT's the most commen failure in this camera... ( Well, in your case, there could be some other failure). THE SOLUTION IS: It's only nessesary to drop a drop of clean gasolin in the upper part of the gear, and then advance the camera few times, WAIT a minute or so and then put apply a tiny drop of very thin "sewing machine oil" in the upper part of the slow gear theeth wheel's and axel's, because it's most of the time that's the part that need it... :-) Hope it will work

    Hi everyone, looking for some advice... I've just bought a second hand Rollei 35 se and I've got a problem with the iso dial and the aperture dial. When I set the iso on 1600 everything moves fine, but if I go down let's say to 400, and then try to open/close the aperture, the iso dial is like "taken" by the aperture dial and goes back to its "stable" 1600 position when I open wide at 2,8. I'm sorry for my bad english and explanation, but if someone gets what I say and has got some good advice, it'll be really, really helpful. Is there anything to do to be able to "separate" the movements of the two dials? Also, I'm not sure if it is linked with the first problem or not, and could also be fixed, but the light meter is kind of chaotic...
