Classical Composer Reacts to ANTHRAX: CAUGHT IN A MOSH | The Daily Doug (Episode 806)

Музыка

#anthrax #caughtinamosh #metalmonday
In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from Anthrax for the very first time on the channel. This band is considered one of the top four thrash metal bands, and I've covered the other three already. So, today's the day to hear Anthrax's music, and I'm starting with their song Caught in a Mosh. The song is full of aggressive rhythms and riffs, and it definitely got my blood pumping! I hope you enjoy!

The Big 4 of thrash: Metallica: the most popular and most angry Slayer: the most chaotic and most scary Megadeth: the most political and very technical Anthrax: the most laid back, the most fun, and much less of the above. Just about fun! And having seen all 4, Anthrax is the most recent I’ve seen(so also the oldest at the time I saw them) and was the most energetic show. I dunno, just a vibe I get from them. Horribly underrated, and shamefully a distant #4 in the Big 4. This is a great track, but I’d say Medusa is probably my favourite. I’d say Anthrax has more punk influence too.

Fun facts about Anthrax: The guitar player on this album, Danny Spitz, is now a master watchmaker. Vocalist Joey Belladonna moonlights in a Journey tribute band. And Spitz's replacement on the guitar is Jonathan Donais from Shadows Fall, a band that was part of the new wave of American metal in the early 2000's. Also, Anthrax's collaboration with Public Enemy was the precursor for the rap-metal genre.

Anthrax is visceral. They don't jump through musical hoops or write songs with multiple sections. They are yellow mustard, not Grey Poupon. When they were struggling, they ate a "loser's lunch," which was a piece of baloney in your hand.

I saw the Metallica/ Anthrax Tour (Master of Puppets/ Spreading The Disease) in Cardiff St David's Hall, Wales, September 1986, 17 days before Cliff was killed in the coach crash. What a tragedy. Second time for Anthrax (and Metallica) at Donington Monsters of Rock Festival August 1987- Bon Jovi, Dio, Metallica, Anthrax, W.A.S.P. & Cinderella. I then saw Anthrax for the last time on the Among the Living Tour Cardiff again, November 1987. From the 'Among' album, classics are 'Indians' and 'I am The Law' . Best tracks from the previous album Spreading The Disease are A.I.R, Madhouse and Gung-Ho. You should also try to squeeze in something by Stormtroopers of Death - offshoot band with Scott Ian, Charlie Benante and Dan Lilker (bass player Anthrax/ Nuclear Assault/ Brutal Truth) and vocalist Billy Milano (Method of Destruction (M.O.D), Mastery) Phew!

This record is more matured and a little bit darker than the precious records allthough Among the Living is the most popular record. -Intro the reallity / Belly of the beast -In my world After Persistence they had a line up change and got an new singer John Bush and recorded Sound of white noise. Great record and def. different to the Joey Belladonna area. -Only -Invisible -Black lodge (it's a kind of ballad). Looking forward for the next metal Monday 🤘🏻

I don't know if people can get how exciting this was at the time, and how much Thrash Metal blew the Glam Metal (Soft Rock in spandex and hair spray) which was dominating MTV off the stage, even before the Seattle Grunge scene put it into its overdue grave. With Anthrax in particular, I think you can hear the influence from Hardcore Punk on Heavy Metal, that had been developed and refined especially in the Twin Cities punk scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, in terms of speed, raucousness, bellowing and making the live audiences need to mosh, to throw themselves around and get their suppressed angers and frustrations out.

That is the charm of Anthrax. Nothing more, nothing less. I'd love if Doug reacted to a couple more songs from Anthrax. They would be short videos without a ton of analysis, but they would be so fun for us fans and Doug would (hopefully) gain an appreciation of Anthrax for what they are. Pure, Fun Thrash Metal. Listening to music should be fun.
