Crime Doesn't Pay!!! More Sebastian Bach with a Vocal Analysis of Skid Row's "18 And Life"

Музыка

I expected harsh vocals and demonic undertones before my first listen to Skid Row a few months ago, which were ultimately shattered by Sebastian Bach's sweet tenor range and beautiful ensemble of "I Remember You". I think that stems from having lived next to Skid Row in Los Angeles, and projecting. This time, I was prepared. Or was I?
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Skid Row performing "18 and Life".

Agreed. I think part of the problem is Skiw Row just gets lumped into that generic last wave of hair metal trying to hang on while grunge was taking over the world. A lot of those bands don't really get judged on their own merit but as weird products of their time. Sebastian Bach definitely stands out as one of the greater talents from that scene.

You could say that this song is about stupid mistakes of youth that can ruin your life. Dave Sabo wrote this song originally about his brother Rick that came home from Vietnam a different person but couldn't make the lyrics work so they changed it to be a story about an 18 year old boy who shot his friend by accident. He thought the gun wasn't loaded.

  • @AnnaluisaSocher

That's interesting. I thought that originally Dave Sabo wrote this song with the lyrics referring to his brother who served in Vietnam, and as he came back home, he was a different person. It was Jon Bon Jovi who gave him advice about making the subject of the song related more to everyone else's experiences, so listeners could find something on which they could relate. Recently I watched an interview with Rachel Bolan who pointed out this.

Hi, crime author here. First off; thanks for being you. I've recently learned that I can sing (my SO introduced me to where my voice is, she had some choir training), and I've been following your channel and learning a lot. Keep doing your thing! Anyhow, your comment about "why do guys keep guns in their pants??" I can (sorta) explain that. That style of carry is called "Appendix carry" or "Mexican carry". Yes, it's associated with criminals and yes, it's as dangerous a way of carrying a gun as you'd imagine for all the reasons you can think of. And yes, plenty of criminals are admitted to hospitals across the country from self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the...groin area. Why people do it; mostly its so they can throw guns away if police are chasing them and have no connection to said gun - after all, if the cops don't actually catch you with the gun it isn't your gun. Also, it apparently feels "manly" and "badass" to have a gun shoved down your pants. I don't get that part any more than you do, but apparently it takes all kinds.

So glad you got to Sebastian! 2 more metal vocalists with unbelievable expression and control from this era that I don't believe you've analyzed yet are Jack Russell from Great White and Midnight from Crimson Glory.
