@@lindabaker4817 I may give you one small example. The show took place at an old airfield overgrown with grass. Around the time of the Panther was started, the field turned into a sea of mud. Because 1.5 million people jumped on it. I drank beer and stuck empty bottles into the ground with the neck down. When Metallica started, I was standing on a hard surface, with a girl on my shoulders, 50 meters from the stage.

it was the days of our shame - sold our country for nothing like savages. I liked this music...but

What's crazy is that a lot of the military that were put there to control that impossibly huge crowd actually got so pumped for this music (AC/DC and Pantera were also there) that they gave up and joined the crowd. You can see it a couple times in this video, but they basically tore their uniforms open and and jumped in the mosh pit. Legends, all of them.

Furthermore, not everyone has to Google lyrics. Some of us actually know them. He had the lyrics wrong. In this case, it was an important distinction.

I am 56, and I remember when Germany was divided east and west. When "Winds of Change" by the Scorpions came out and the Berlin wall fell, it was the same feeling. Like the world was coming together after WWII. Then Metallica went to Russia and it only escalated the feeling. I miss those days when we thought we were moving in a better direction.

I totally agree also!! Another good example is how our country including all Americans pulled together in the days that followed 9/11. You couldn't go down a residential street without seeing the American flag hanging everywhere. Unfortunately most dwell on our differences rather than all that we have in common. After 9/11 you could just feel it, the love and pride that we all felt for our country and our democracy. These days it is quite the opposite which is heartbreaking, also this makes us a weaker nation IMO. This concert was a gift to the Russian people from Gorbachev, a free all day concert that included five bands. I wonder how one would ever find their car after the show lol

One of the greatest bands of all time...in front of the biggest crowd of all time. Can you imagine the energy?!!

One of my favorite musical history moments. They stopped counting at 1.6 million so who really knows how many were there? The crowd with the helicopters and military guard around the stage is awesome!

And thinking from the history of the biggest live crowds this event is on 5 th or 6 position, Rod Stewart concert was the biggest with 4.2 million in Brazil on first spot then electronic musician Jean Michele Jare on 2-3 spots [one in France (Paris) and the other concert elsewhere] but as heavy rock-metal live event yeah this was the biggest festival live but Metallica was not the single band (like record holder Rod Stewart) because on same event with them was also AC/DC, Pantera & Black Crows and people were not just Russians were from other countries from Europe too.. but yeah.. hell of atmosphere and just imagine if one is right in the middle and needs to use the toilet.. what it will do ?!!!

Не знаю, что вы прочитали в кремлевской пропаганде, но даже на видео можно увидеть в начале концерта другие флаги, развевающиеся над толпой, не только России, но и Англии, США, Польши, Чехии, Франция... Русская армия была сведена к массам людей, прибывшим самолетом в аэропорт Тишино..

To think that there were 1.6mil people is ludicrous. 1. nobody counted people 2. there were no tickets, and anybody could enter the airfield. if there were 400.000 people on this concert it would still be epic number, but people have to exaggerated everything like children.

I worked as a doorman for a friend's club in 1994 to 1996. The owner grew up with one of the band. It was the surprise of my life when Metallica performed in his 250 seat night club in Fairbanks, Alaska as a birthday gift for the club owner. Over a 3 year period when I worked there we had Quiet Riot, Blue Oyster Cult, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Motley Crew, Charlie Daniels, Confederate Railroad, and a dozen other big name bands of the era. He would sell tickets for 2 shows and the ticket prices were determined by taking the hotel, (which he owns), meals, and payment for the band and divide the cost by 250. The average ticket price was around $30 dollars. I have 2 signed guitars from shows there. One was signed by Bruce Dickinson, and the other one signed by the entire group Blue Oyster Cult.

I love how calm and cool James is in front of all those people.

This concert happened before the Soviet Union collapsed , President Mikhail Gorbachev had been arrested. Boris Yeltsin was President of Russia he ensured officials would make it happen. He needed as much support as he could get as he was trying to stop the old guard taking over. Metallica were called in at short notice,they were on a European tour. A few months later the Soviet Union collapsed.

The Berlin Wall came down in 1989 this concert was in September 1991 the Soviet Union could have carried on, the old guard were trying to do that and arrested Gorbachev, President Boris Yeltsin stood in front of the Russian Whitehouse and personally convinced the tanks and troops to stay with him, about twenty people were killed but the troops agreed and gave loyalty to Yeltsin. If not the Soviet Union would have carried on. When you go to amazing bands you can FEEL it in your chest and I'm not just talking about the drums and base! I had so much emotions swell up I had tears in my eyes while feeling electric! I've seen Ozzy, Killswtich Engaged, Job for a Cowboy, Marylyn Mansion, In This Moment, Devil Driver, Hatebreed, Cannibal Corpse, and Lamb of God to name a few... Rock on!

I’ve been to over 14 Metallica concerts and every single one was amazing. The best was still the Damaged Justice tour in 1989, it was my second Metallica concert (First was when they opened for Ozzy in 1986, only time I saw Cliff live). The energy was just insane and the air was electric. I got to meet the band in 2009 on the Death Magnetic tour, which was a lifetime dream come true. James is the reason I learned how to play guitar as a teenager and finally, 20+ years later I got to meet him. Their music and playing guitar saved my life as a teenager. High School was a really bad time for me, as I was bullied mercilessly for being “fat” even though I really wasn’t that fat. It destroyed my self esteem and made HS a living hell for me. Being able to come home, throw on any Metallica album at the time, and play through it start to finish was my way of getting those emotions and frustrations out. Without that outlet, I doubt I make it out of my teenage years.

There really is no comparison to being there when a band plays live, sure you have their album, but but no it is not the same.

Bonamassa says he offers a two and a half hour escape from reality, describing his concerts. This is what max . Volume stadium rock and roll does. Turn it UP 🎉

Our own AC/DC played there too, and it was their stage that Metallica is on. What an amazing feeling to play in front of so many people!

That intro music you hear in the beginning is what they usually play right before they come on stage to start a concert.

This song is about all the childhood fears when the lights go out. And sometimes we bring those fears with us into adulthood. The best song from this performance in Moscow is Creeping Death. Its one of the rare songs that is better in this live performance than the album version. Please , please do that one!! Rock on, Kelly

This song was originally written by James hetfield about infant crib death. But was told by producer bob rock at the time that the lyrics were to harsh and he switched the lyrics to what they are known now. Still as powerful

Let's take a moment to appreciate how virtually impossible it is in an outdoor venue to get that kind of sound quality and clarity. Hats off to their sound engineer and crew and the guy working the sound board

Metallica was the 1st concert my oldest son went to. He was only 13 or 14 and I let him go with a friend and his big brother. He had a great time and returned home safely. He'll be 40 this summer 😊

I remember as a kid they played different bits and pieces from this concert on MTV and being 8-9 years old and staying up late on a Saturday night with some popcorn and a Pepsi to watch this was mind blowing to say the least.

Thats one kick ass performance. How it must feel to play in front of that many people! Pure adrenaline!

I was 16 years old in 1991. I started to listen to Metallica, Ozzy and Megadeth. I grew up with the threat of the Soviets sending nuclear misslies against my country (Denmark). When the wall fell in Berlin and the Soviets wanted to become friends, it was the best feeling ever for me. I was a young teenager. But then it just went downhill again.. God dammit :( And this was done by moneypeople of the west and the east. So sad for the ordinary people.

When i saw them in 93 it was 40,000 people in south Carolina

This song was written by lead singer Klaus Miene and produced by Keith Olsen and the band. Winds of Change is a rock ballad that celebrates the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold war. It was actually the song that propelled them to fame, they were doing so terribly before that, that they actually considered packing it all in. The Winds of Change was their swan song. Then it exploded, then their back catalogue exploded because of it.

Man I wish I could have been there. I could watch the beginning over and over.

So I never went to concerts because I’m an introvert and hate crowds. However, I attended Louder Than Life in 2022 and it changed my life! Everyone, rich, poor, black, white, etc was rocking out to NIN, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Ministry, Evanescence, RHCP. It was humanity brought together by music. Since then I’ve seen Toto, Duran Duran, Bruno Mars, Blondie, The Killers, Depeche Mode, Bastille, Journey, etc. Every time I’m humbled by the way we collectively enjoy something as simple as music. ❤

This song can help you overcome your own fears and anxieties... There is so much here to explore, it's inspired me in many ways....opened new doors to understanding my own mind!

The sound of freedom! I grew up listening to The Kinks, The Beatles, etc. That was my introduction to 'bad' music. And I loved it. I'm 71 and I still listen and love this song, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Santana, the list goes on and so many others. You should listen to Santana's Soul Sacrifice, at Woodstock. They took a hit of acid because they weren't supposed to go on for several hours. Less than an hour later they came and told them they are up because the band that was slotted to go on was running late. Funny story but true. You should read what Carlos said about it. :)

Just knowing what those people had gone through and the freedom they felt listening to Western music blasting and in person. Brought tears to my eyes.

Imagine being the musician up on stage and seeing this unbelievable amount of people in front of you. As a concert photographer I‘ve been up on stage taking photos of the crowd with up to 20.000 people in front of the stage. That was already huge. But this?!?!

I think this video brought me the most joy of all the others, i was smiling and Laughing the whole time, i even teared up just seeing yall rock out together and the joy on your faces...music could heal world in my opinion.

Have seen a short clip there James were interviewed and talked about this concert, from what I remember none of them had expected that it would come so many people, he mentioned that he was a little embarrassed that the fans had learned curse words in english through them, at the same time proud that the fans had wanted to learn the english language.

Metallica known globally for their sound and the crowds. Their live performances are the best. Crazy, the wide-eyes and mouth look on your face, and BP pumping his bodyline. Put the ARHead to BPBody reacting to this again, just creating would be CRAZY. Great reaction...🔥☝️😌

There were actually much fewer people. But it was the biggest gig before the Soviet Union fell. People were craving to see their idols. It was their FIRST time to see them live. It was a free gig. It was quite violent, wild, but full of energy and excitement!

Here’s another treat from Metallica…. There’s an old Irish folk song called Whiskey In The Jar - the song dates back to the 17th century. Metallic released a metal/rock version of Whiskey In The Jar in 1999…. It’s really great!

Nazareth did "Whiskey in the Jar" in the 70s, but I don't think it was actually released in the States. If you haven't heard it, check it out.

I graduated college in 91... best music ... so glad I was born when I was 😊

So the Sandman is popular in many cultures around the world. He is said to sprinkle sand over the eyes of children at night to help them get to sleep and dream. Initially the song was supposed to be about SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) but as it was being written they changed it. Usually the sandman helps you go to sleep and have good dreams, but in the song, as you see if you watch their video, it's about nightmares. Their video for this is a must see, in my opinion.

The fact that I've lived through most of ... any bright, beautiful eras :_) and I'm making my kids live them too! They know this video and many others hahaha MJ, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Aerosmith... throw it to them!!!

In 1991, the Soviets really needed this. Gathering for a performance like this was a breath of fresh air.

They were like kids who were locked in a closet for a long time. Then let out and given a brand new toy. ❤️

When this concert took place (Sept 28th), it was still the $oviet Union since it wasn't dissolved until Dec 21 later that year.

When this song by Disturbed came out, my daughter played it for us. We were singing it word for word. She said this just came out, how do you know it. She was shocked to hear that this is the Simon and Garfunkel song. She walked around dazed for days😂

In the spring of 1991, Hetfield brought the band his lyrics for "Enter Sandman" and, of all topics, it was about crib death - "y'know, baby suddenly dies, the sandman killed it," the Metallica frontman described it in 2007 - and it's destructive effect on the family unit.

I was lucky enough to see these back on this tour in 91, showing my age haha, one of the best shows I saw 🙂

That period of time was incredible. I was in my 20s when the Berlin Wall came down. I was glued to the TV when the East Germans walked throrugh the wall and the West Germans hugged them. The East Germans’ faces looked like they had just walked into another dimension. They were so overwhelmed with everything. Amazing thing to have seen live on TV.

Living is such a gift.

At 39, my fandom of Enter Sandman has been has been kind of a reverse rollercoaster. The first time I heard it, I was blown away. In my teens, early 20s... I thought I knew what made music great, and I started to look at Enter Sandman as a bit of a 'poser' song. Now, almost 40... the respect and love is 100%+. It's just such a great, great rock song.

Its EXIT LIGHT. The song was originally about S.I.D.S ( Sudden Infant Death Syndrome ). But the record label made them change the words so they made it about children having nightmares. In their interpretation of the sandman , he brings nightmares instead of good dreams .

I literally had goosebumps during their entire intro to the song… that and remembering the time… I was a senior in high school and this was such an incredible time!!!

In Northern European folklore the sandman spinkked sand in the eyes of children to put them to sleep and help them dream, that is why you woke up with stuff in the corners of your eyes. This song was originally meant to be about Sudden infant death syndrome. (SIDS) some say it's because of the sandman and the nightmares he brings to some children instead of bringing them good dreams. They had to rewrite it a bit to be more sellable.
