Jamie was a very late addition to the TARDIS. He was only meant to be in ‘The Highlanders’ and they had already filmed his goodbye at the end of the story. But the producer, Innes Lloyd, quite liked the character, so he asked Frazer if he wanted to join, so they had to go back and re-shoot the ending so that Jamie goes into the TARDIS with them. The problem was that some of the stories for the season had already been commissioned and written before the decision was made, so in some cases, they had to give some of Ben’s dialogue and scenes to Jamie. This, according to Frazer, created some tension between him and Michael Craze. ‘The Moonbase’ was the most difficult in that regard, because there was no way to work Jamie into the story, so they had to have him be unconscious for the majority of the story.

The animation for the missing episodes of this story worked extremely well, being faithful to the TV production without needless embellishments. I wish the animated installments could have all followed this example.

In answer to your question about tenth planet - it’s set in 1986. I only mention it cos this is something worth remembering for later in the show 😉

Brilliant tense story. Loved Polly coming up with the lethal cocktail. Pat Troughton now really coming into his own as The Doctor.

What I came here to say has already been said, but I'll say it anyway. The Tenth Planet took place canonically in 1986, and it will be referenced again waaaay down the road, so it's a good thing to remember. The cybermen always seem to sound at least a little different every time you see them up until you get to the 1980s "neomorph" cybermen. Looking forward to your reaction to those guys, but it'll be a while lol

As another commenter has pointed out, you are absolutely spot on about why Jamie doesn't have much to do in his early episodes. In my head canon the reason it takes him so long to recover is his acclimatisation to being a time traveller. His cultural background doesn't give him the mental toolbox to deal with even basic industrial technology let alone advanced concepts. I like to think of this as his subconscious forcing his mind into processing all the crazy stuff he's seen recently. You are correct about the Cybermen changing significantly since 'The Tenth Planet'. In that story the actors affected a sing-song way of speaking. In this story, I believe they used an early electronic larynx to create the voices. As I understand it, this involved an metal insert that fitted into the actor's mouth.

In the 1960's with television and movies it was not uncommon particular characters would always karate chop knock people out unconsious they did that in earlier Bond films, "The Avengers" not the Marvel one the spy show and "The Saint" lot of action shows from that period.

i did react to the surviving episodes of underwater menace but i've kept that patreon exclusive as it wasnt a full story. I prefer to only post full stories on youtube :)

By the way dude, if you’re using iplayer - the faceless ones episodes 1 and 3 exist, but they’ve only got the animated one on iplayer. Ditto episode 2 of the story after it
