If you remember Susan was reading a book on the French Revolution in the first episode. In this story we also got the first ever location filming of the Doctor walking through the countryside (though it wasn’t William Hartnell). Also all Ian’s scenes in the prison were on film so William Russell could have a holiday. So we now have a summer break but the series continues to film the next two stories to increase the gap between production and transmission.

I really love this one. Very underrated, genuinely funny, yet really quite grim and violent. This for me is the story really steps up to the plate and is forced to be the main protagonist - he is so much fun in this one, I love how he just blags his way throughout this whole story...

Hey man, excellent reaction as always. I’m glad you liked this one. A lot of fans don’t love the story, but I think when watching it as part of the first season in sequence as you are, it does stand out as more fast paced and engaging than perhaps fan wisdom give it credit for, as when you watch the stories out of order (as I and a lot of fans did growing up). Also I liked your point about watching public executions - you’d be surprised how many supposedly civilised people would probably watch these now if it was brought back. You made me think about how Doctor Who is meant to be educational in its early days, and it’s clearly meant to provoke thought into how history was, as you were doing too. I had never heard of the French Revolution until I watched this story when I was about 8, but it inspired me to go and read a couple of books about it afterwards. This story is also notable for being the first time we see any outside location filming - but annoyingly it’s not actually Hartnell we see in those long shots in the woodland pathway - it’s a body double cos Hartnell was too busy filming in the studio at the time. They churned this shit out 46 weeks a year still at this point! It’s a wonder there aren’t even more flubbed lines when you realise they had an hour and a half to film a 25 minute episode in this era - crazy. Keep up the good work bro I look forward to your thoughts on season 2

bruh that is a crazy filming schedule. Yeah i'd absolutely be watching the executions out of morbid curiousity, can't lie. Thanks for tuning in :)

Excellent historical story. Napoleon did become Emperor of France. He was finally defeated at the famous battle of Waterloo. The first Doctor was more than capable of having a go. Plenty more examples of that in the next season. William Hartnell just gets better and better. As always your reactions are a breath of fresh air and are always entertaining.

If you want to read about the actual history of ''The Reign of Terror’’, I recommend 'A People’s History of the French Revolution' by Eric Hazan.
