    I actually find these just as creepy Cybermen designs as the originals. The more droning and emotionless voice, the way the mouth has a flap to it, opening up every time the cyberman speaks like a prison door, the way the face has no features but is just a blank smooth head, almost head sculpt like. The way the eyes are accentuated by the silver rings etc.

    This story is really the first "true" Troughton story. Power was the handover and Highlanders and Underwater Menace were the Hartnell holdovers but Moonbase was the first definitive take on the Second Doctor. He's got his iconic "Some corners of the universe" speech and is sneaky but human, intelligent yet acts like a goofball. And it's the first true blue base under siege that defined the format to the present day. It's rough around the edges but it's a very important story for the show.

    08:55 I feel the urge to mention that this scene is actually completly scientifically sound. Since there is only one atmosphere of pressure difference and closing that hole with anything to seal the difference will work immediately. It's a myth that the pressure is so strong that it would suck you out with great force. Other than that amazing video my dude! :)

  • @sk1ppman

    @sk1ppman

    Exactly. Films tend to show things getting spaghettified when there's a minor hull breach. In space you don't get sucked out, you get pushed out by depressurization. The less atmosphere, the less force.

    Well 1 atm is near 14 psi, so there’s 14 lbs of load on the piece for every square inch. For that size hole though it would probably work, assuming it’s decently flat as well the pressure actually seals it back or very nearly does.

    I was thinking the same thing. Granted, the weather control machine in this episode is completely ridiculous. If it worked the way they were using it to stop the Cybermen, they would all be dead the first time they turned it on... The gravitational field they'd create with it would shatter the glass and send them all out into space without suits. If they want something like this to be realistic, it should just be a satellite that they control from a base far away from it. I can't get mad considering this was made before the moon landing in real life, but I also can't ignore the bad science.

    Just like with The Tenth Planet, I think you’re underselling the historical importance of this story in terms of the “base under siege” format. While that story was the first of its kind, The Moonbase is the first time they reuse that setup. It may appear today as an average base under siege story but it was really like a mission statement for the Troughton era, especially considering that Innes Lloyd used to it promote a sort of relaunch of the show and the fact that nearly every story in Season 5 and elements of the rest of Season 4 were crafted in the base under siege mold.

  • @TheoreticalRain

    @TheoreticalRain

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@bendream544 Not really. It takes place in a “base” (more of a colony) and the Daleks use that to multiply and kill lots of people, but the main conflict is not just the monsters doing a siege on the base. It’s very much about the political tensions of the colony and humans using the Daleks against each other for their own gain. Plus, it takes very little influence from the Tenth Planet and very few later stories try to imitate it. The Moonbase, Tomb of the Cybermen, The Web of Fear, Fury from the Deep, etc. are much more similar to the Tenth Planet than they are to Power of the Daleks.

    The tea tray would work just fine. Normal earth atmosphere is about 15 psi. Depending on the material used 1/8" plastic would probably hold 100psi or more just fine. You're being pushed out with whatever the atmospheric pressure is, not pulled out by suction. The show The Expanse showcases depressurization wonderfully. You're not being sucked into a black hole or anything.

    To answer your question of 'how did Jamie hit his head hard enough' in the low moon gravity, it wouldn't be a question of gravity or weight but one of mass. Jamie would have the same mass as he would on Earth. Apollo astronauts learned this when they attempted to see just how high they could jump during moonwalks. Charlie Duke tells the story of his own dealings with height and mass on the moon and he was sure not to repeat the experiment.

    Stupid Earth brains... brilliant. Yeh does have some great lines. And some rather silly bits, like that chase scene. I recall novelisation, called Doctor Who and the Cybermen, saying Cybermen substituted emotions by wanting power, so decide to conquer worlds. And of course base under siege can feel a bit... well reminiscent of coronavirus now. Especially as there is a plague here. Sure it's similar, down to having an international team at the base. But it shows the visions of the future and some good worldbuilding. Though still have knighthoods in 2070? Well, anyway, good second review for Cybercember.

    9:00 I think the main issue with the decompression is that a whole that big would release all the air in the base far to quickly and violently to react to. Also, the tea tray not having a perfect fit to irregularities of the tray and window, so there'd be cracks the air could escape from.

    I have not seen any episode of The Moonbase in years. I think I had one of the VHS tapes that had a reconstruction involving narration over stills from the missing episodes. I remember liking it a lot, but maybe that's just because only stupid Earth brains like mine would have been fooled.

    The Moonbase is an awesome story it is my 3rd Cybermen story after Tomb my 2nd is Earthshock I am not keen on Revenge Attack Silver Nemesis or surprisingly the Invasion . I find the Invasion is too long in episode length the Cybermen as the main villains get very little dialogue and also the story just could have been done with a different enemy instead of the Cybermen who IMO are bloody wasted in the Invasion .
