City of Johannesburg | The costs are insurmountable for residents of the city: Julia Fish

Civil society organisation, Jo'burg Community Action Network has called a proposed surcharge to prepaid electricity customers by the City of Johannesburg irresponsible. This comes as a petition has been circulating on social media, calling on the city to scrap the R200 monthly electricity surcharge- with petitioners saying that NERSA is failing in its energy regulation task in allowing this. Residents say that they were not consulted over the charge, and lamented the strain this will add to the already cash-strapped customers who've also seen increases in electricity, water and sewer tariffs come into effect from the first of this month.

Say what you like about NGOs like OUTA, but this is a major service to the residents of Joburg, and I really wish jobirgers would look past the racial filtering and focused on the initiatives and actions that need ALL our support to give residents of all races and social classes dignity and a liveable standard of life. The CoJ is taking advantage of the racial divisions and using it to shaft everyone…

Why this emplimented same time with increase of electricity with 17% that we dont even get from our work places. And its said because townships residents dont pay electricity. And dont u think this will forced residents to connect illegally.

ANC coalition in Jhb is destroying this once City of Gold. Voters really don’t understand corruption and how important their votes are.

I believe Helen. They obviously knew about the deputy ministers but not TWO deputy ministers. % wise might not be high but they should then channel that 30 - 50 million to the NGO's that they stopped funding.

City need to upgrade their security services to include securing hijacked building which house thousands of people who do not pay for service. Izinyoka should not exist if security of power networks is improved. Illegal occupation of high storey building where people are using electricity and water without paying for it. These building are visiting the city millions of rands
