Civic Organisations prepare for court battle over new R200 prepaid electricity surcharge
The City of Johannesburg and civic organisations might battle it out in court soon, over the new prepaid electricity surcharge that kicked in from the 1st of July this year.
This follows Johannesburg's decision to compel prepaid electricity consumers to pay a R200 fixed service charge, which is R230 including VAT, for power monthly.
But the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, OUTA, has slammed the City of Johannesburg, and says residents were not adequately consulted.

Jhb City needs to cover the R3billion that they owe Eskom. The money was stolen. So they have introduced it to raise money from consumers. I am shocked to hear we pay 12% more for electricity in Jhb. Say what? Time to move to Pretoria

Prepaid and postpaid electricity tarrifs per kw isn't the same. Prepaid is higher and was under the impression that this is because it included this charge already built into each unit (kw) which is purchased. Daylight robbery
This is due to having that al jamah mayor how can they assume everyone in jhb can afford that

Guys we voting in this useless politicians who can't serve people. We must pass a law. If politicians fails to meet the needs of the people in the city. They can be removed and civic organization can step in to run the city.
It’s the doubling the burden on pre paid users. Post paid get credit prepaid users don’t. No collection costs, no delay in payment it is cheaper to provide electricity to pre paid than post paid.
Load of Bull...When will all these extra costs end? My salary can't keep up with all of this.
