Gwarube's plans to improve SA's education system

Newzroom Afrika profiles new cabinet ministers with the largest budget but dismal performance. The education portfolio is being described by some as a poisoned chalice. Iman Rappetti talks to Siviwe Gwarube, the new minister of basic education to hear what her plans are to lift the country's education system out of dismal global rankings and propel it to the top of the class.
Tune into Newzroom Afrika DStv channel 405 for more.

Consolidation of concepts, not ploughing through a massive curriculum overloaded with assessments. 30 in a class maximum, otherwise it's crowd control. Teach student teachers HOW to teach literacy and numeracy. Children should leave the foundation phase able to read and write and work with numbers. Those teaching student teachers should spend regular time teaching children IN schools to be aware of the challenges. Children deserve teachers who are well trained and passionate about making a difference.

The fact is that the standard of our education system is far below minimum, so it's time for a fresh and intelligent mind ,such as Gwarube's, to step in and show how to effectively run an education department

to employ more teachers we need more schools. Makes no sense to employ teachers if you got no place for classrooms. We need to end pit toilets, we need more school for poor children, we need to get rich schools to share their resources, some of the resources obtained pre 94.. we got to improve the chances of the poor kids, be they black, or white or coloured.. if you start now it will take maybe another two generations to see results.

IF you have SADTU dictating on how to run the Education of our Country, Then you can expect the worst education in the world. Bring back school inspectors that are well educated to assess the quality and commitment of Educators.Teachers need to know how to read and write effectively, and not those that have false qualifications. Re-open the many ESpecialist Education Colleges for Teacher Training minimum 3years of study. Set asided the excuse of racism for poor performance. Well done to Siwevive

🎉🎉🎉best wishes my darling ! Use the old fashion cuisinnairs for children to understand calculations as they start school! Check the Chinese system as well how they use physicality in games to be fit throughout basic education this strengthens the children! My mother used this approach and her school was excellent! Include civil society to contribute with fruit and protein soups for the indigent children so that their brain is fed with requisite nutrition! Play is important for improving concentration as well!🎉🎉🎉best wishes equally for all our children without discrimination

I dispise the party she represents but let's give her a chance to prove herself, judging by how she has responded to the questions of the presenter she seems up for the task. If she gets the support and corporation she needs, she may very well be what our country has been desperately waiting for in this critical portfolio

I am for this change as we need it for the hope of a better generation. Help the primary phase as reading is bad. Science and maths are falling apart. Change the benchmark mark to 50% so the children could work hard. Practical subjects are needed....
