Citroen e-C4 First Drive - Can this EV compete? | Fully Charged for CARS

Robert really likes the e-C4, its 'supremely satisfactory', but he's struggling to rave about it. It's a really nice compact SUV, good to drive, decent range and packed full of lovely features. But are they all needed? As with other EVs, when compared with their petrol/diesel counterparts, could they be stripped down of some of these add-ons to bring the price down to being more affordable? Does anyone really need their back massaged while driving?

I absolutely love it. Thanks to Citroën for bringing a car with Rolls Royce comfort aspirations for a more proletarian price. The market are filled with Ferrari wannabe cars, riding with harsh suspension setups and low profile. With most cars one cannot give granny a lift without worrying whether she will lose her teeth at the next road undulation. So bravo Citroën.

Just my take on it, but I think the reason for all the Gizmo's is they actually cost next to nothing for the manufacturer to supply and fit them and are very profitable when customers choose them on their ICE vehicles. On EV's there is an expensive overhead for the actual EV system, so they offset it by bunging in all those gizmo's.

Well, I think there's more than 1 reason. Of course, you have the huge R&D cost that legacy automakers are investing in designing electric drivetrains and building cars around them. But I also think it's a bit of a Tesla effect. If you go back a decade, we had cars like the Citroën C0, the VW e-Up, and so on. And in comes Tesla with luxury electric cars with bigger margins. And now we see legacy automakers investing in those bigger margin cars because they know they actually have buyers for cars that expensive.

This is easy to answer: mainstream manufacturers do not have the production infrastructure (e.g. battery production capacity) to sell E-cars in large numbers. Hence, throwing in all this extra stuff they can argue for a high 'luxury price' and thus keep sales numbers down to managable levels.

You can buy an electric car without all the "extras", trouble is they aren't much cheaper. The cost of the battery is still very expensive and that's the real problem. Throwing in lots of kit doesn't actually add much to the cost of the car, but makes it look better value. Removing most of the fancy stuff would remove about £1,500 max from the list price!

The answer to your question Bobby , is that legacy automakers have to hide their pricing strategy by overloading with options (that you are still paying for) to falsely claim EV are far more expensive than the equivalent ICE vehicle. Otherwise JoePublic might just leave them with 10 million unsold oil burners

Another software adjustment is needed: the cruise control's "Adaptive" feature remains activated at all times once the cruise control is engaged. This poses a risk as the vehicle may decelerate during overtaking manoeuvres under specific motorway conditions. Currently, the distance control settings are limited to approximately 3, 2, and 1-second following distances. Introducing an additional setting of "0" seconds on the same control would effectively deactivate the Adaptive Distance Control, ensuring safe overtaking. Kindly address this issue promptly.

Watched this when it was first posted and would like Robert to know that despite ‘speccing’ the EV variant with all the bells and whistles, this Citroen is depreciating fast which is exactly how I’ve afforded my cars over four decades plus. It’s currently November 2023 and there’s a 2022 Sunshine with 17,000 miles on the clock going for £17k on auto trader. It’s not alone either, so when I can get a two year old one for just under £15k, I think I’ll grab one. I agree with many of the comments here too, it’s a comfortable car with all the range we need for 95% of the time and we can top up using a fast charger a couple of times a year for longer journeys . Affordable EVs are here, they’re just two years old and packed with free options! 👍
