MG5 First Drive | Is this the estate car we've been waiting for? | 100% Independent, 100% Electric

Ғылым және технология

LIKE if an electric estate is appealing & SHARE if you think EVs should be more affordable
The MG5 is not only the first estate to join the electric car market, but it's also very competitively priced. Designed and made in China, this 5 door electric estate is solid, stable and well built. The interior may be a little dated, and it might not be the most exciting EV, but its impressive range, performance, driving ease and affordable cost show that MG are pitching this to sell to the masses. Being an estate, it is very spacious and, surprisingly, if you floor it, it will go like the clappers. It has some peculiar quirks but all of these can be overlooked when you consider what you are getting for the price.

@Ian G Yeah, NA needs long ranges as you tend to drive further than we do in the UK/EU. This would be fine for me as a daily even with my 130mile round trip. Its why Tesla got it right with their supercharger network and long range cars, they just need to make a cheaper EV. Not everyone wants an iPod on wheels that can drive itself, most just want a car that goes from A to B and is an EV.

This standard run of the mill car is just what the EV revolution needs. I love Tesla cars but for the revolution to really take off it needs car manufacturers producing run of the mill cars that are cheap, practical and yet still have all the advantages of an EV over ICE.

@@shaungilmartin1505 Not really Shaun. When you are actually filling up nightly at home the charging network becomes less of an issue. It depends on your driving habits but I haven't needed to go near a charging station in a few weeks of owning an electric and there's a really question about the economic viability of charging stations for me. Petrol needs to be transported on the road, stored in tanks and metered out through special pumps with a lot of safety measures given you are storing an explosive, highly toxic liquid. Fast chargers require a large economic outlay in order to get the amount of current to a location ( way beyond anything normal ) with car owners only occasionally needing your service. I have a "fueling station" at home and I am not sure of the economics of petrol stations switching to EV recharging stations. It's much more likely to make sense as an ancillary service in places where people are stopping for other reasons and on major arteries. I would see a lot more likelihood of councils putting regular charging stations on streets that already have standard voltage cabling in the ground and we do see supermarkets putting in charging. I live in the US and we are behind on this but they have put in DC Fast Charging in my local Walmart. There is a lot of expensive plant there, a very large transformer, and I could see myself going there the night before a planned long trip to take my battery up to 85% and top up at the house overnight. I just learned that the recommendation is to not recharge to 100% nightly so I will typically only have 50 to 150 miles range ( 238 mile Chevy Bolt ) in the batteries. I think the requirement to outfit any new housing with charging point needs to be in the code - be that apartments or actual houses. In 10 years, everything sold will he plugin hybrid or pure EV.

So this one should do the trick, just waiting for a kia cee'd EV. The MG has a nicer interior ( gearshifter is 😱 in the kia). Those things start to matter, digital dash , nice gearshifter and a decent charging rate , hoping for 100DC ). Range is less important than but suits for me like it is now. 50kWh is more thanks ppl need anyway commuting.

I've had the MG ZS EV for 6 months - does what it says on the tin and we're delighted with it. The MG5 has auto climate control which is missing on the ZS. But the ZS has adaptive cruise control which I believe the MG5 doesn't have. Generally I think the MG5 will do very well in the UK, especially with taxi drivers. The obsession with SUVs is often down to liking the higher driving position, but outside of that the MG5 would make a great family car and great for dog owners, of whom there are a lot in the UK!

I looked at one of these in the dealers while my ZS was in for the upgrade - it's a really nice looking car. I think in a few more years, we’re going to see really quite good cars out of China, absolutely taking over the European market, because they are embracing electric cars fully. Effectively, they will replace the Japanese auto makers, who have refused to change. Thanks, Robert! Nobody else on my feed is doing these videos!

I'm sure it'll find buyers but there's so much more to an estate car (and the need for one) than just "a big boot". There's quite a chunky load lip there, no false floor and seats that don't actually fold flat. Therefore, aside from being bigger perhaps, it is no more flexible than any other electric car. Arguably the ID3, Peugeot e2008 are actually more flexible and practical because they make it easier for people to slide big loads in. No ICE estate car currently on sale has such a basic load area, so this is quite a disappointing area for the MG. Otherwise, it's good that MG have noticed a gap for estate cars which everyone else seems to be falling asleep on. Having said that, the Enyaq and ID4 will give this a run for its money when it comes to practicality, and in the Enyaq's case, maybe even price. Exciting times.

What’s great about this channel is it’s good sensible common driver feedback. The honesty is this vehicle will be appreciated greatly in the U.K. by people who don’t go sideways at every turn or roundabout. The vehicle delivers what they want which is load capacity, range and std equipment levels that they understand from ICE cars. The infotainment centre looks a little poor but overcome that with an apple play or android system connected from the owners phone and it’s pretty well sorted. Love the reviews ! Keep it grounded :)

I’ve had one of these for 3 weeks. You know what? It’s lovely. Very nice soft suspension, steering a bit light but at 65 I’m not Lewis Hamilton! It doesn’t matter. It isn’t the prettiest car I’ve ever owned but the build quality looks to be really good and it has fantastic 200 mile range. I’m delighted with it.

@@charlesbridgford254 I know that. Don't treat me like a bloody idiot. I wanted an electric car with limited funds. I didn't want to buy a Renault or Peugeot as a) my wife already has a Renault Zoe which is of very average build quality and b) the Peugeot 208e and 2008e weren't designed as EVs and are very expensive for their very limited range. I already have an Huawei phone which is quite easily the best phone I've ever had. I didn't support the moronic Brexit (which is destroying the UK) , as I believe in Freetrade. Very interesting and enjoyable review..... As mentioned....Chinese quality has leapt up in recent years....mainly because buyers won't tolerate rubbish any more, regardless of how cheap it is.... A wake up call to the immensely conservative Euro/American automotive industry....hide-bound by the internal combustion engine.... And great to be reminded that we have had SUV's rammed down our throats for years now.....IMO the 'estate car' is a much better option for transporting a family, carrying stuff, running a business etc etc..... When the prices come down to realistic levels these are the cars people will want to buy..... And friendly to the environment too.....

As a Canadian EV driver, I'd say that the combination of a heated steering wheel and heated seats give me better winter range and safety because I can drive without thick winter gloves or a movement restricting outer jacket while the car's interior is still chilly, but be comfortably warm, which means that I don't lose as much energy to heating the air outside my car just to keep me warm. Obviously I still need the defogger on at times so I can see, but it's still a significant improvement when it's cold.
