This is the first time I discovered your channel and dude, I love your delivery and style. I also found your comments insightful. Hopefully you will see an uptick in views on this one since Shem Philips just launched a KickStarter where this game is offered on one of the pledge levels. Thanks for taking the time to shoot, edit and post this video. I definitely found it useful.

With so many good games available I think its important to know if we are essentially retreading the same ground and if perhaps there are those that have come before that do it better. Thanks for the review and please do keep up the good work.

I can't disagree more. This game's pricing for actions is brilliant. It's more conflict heavy than Scythe, and the combat wheel with the variance of options based on the tactic cards option is likewise a real fun aspect. Clearly not for you. Definitely for us! Also, the choice of keeping the price low!! All the yes!

Had a lot of fun with First Light (though it's best played at 1 or 2), but I passed on this one after looking at the gameplay. First Light felt more thematic with the premise of humans making peaceful first contact with the alien civilizations, establishing bases, and gathering tech/resources. This just looks like another asymetric dudes fighting on a map game.

This is true. There really nothing new here and as such it’s a pointless waste of nearly 4 hours.

We felt similarly, the game is very good but the teach and depth of asymmetry is only for groups that can regularly get togther and always play with the same players. No way anyone wants to wait an hour to teach 1 new player and see him floundering around the whole game. The game balance is a function of player knowledge and skill across all factions. Too much game for us, unfortunately, because it's a gem for the righr group.

Interesting, thanks. Do you think if you played it say 10 times and learned one of two factions very well, the underlying game play might really shine through?

I enjoyed Chaos Order but not enough to buy it for myself. First Light I really enjoy though, enough that I bought the first edition, sold it, then bought the second edition and will be buying the expansions in the future. It’s quite a different game from Chaos Order so it might be worth you giving it a go dispute not enjoying Chaos Order. It’s a dice placement/engine builder that really burns my brain every time I play it.

@@BoardGameBollocks be a bit more open minded. It is a great game with a completely different setting. The ONLY reason Im watching your video is because First Light is rules light but heavy with strategy so I was curious about this game. Even though you might not get the dice roll you want, you can always mitigate it if you are smart enough

First light looks night and day different than this one. The best comparison i could come up with woupd be Dune the board game and Dune Imperium....both the same universe but appeal to very different gamers

Scythe looks like a game where you’re going to battle it out with your mechs but often there are very few battle and is more centered on the euro aspects of gaming. This game has euro parts to it but there is a lot more battling involved. You need to duke it out over those relics or else someone will walk away with the win by collecting them. If dudes on a map games are your thing then you may want to give this one a go.

I like asymmetrical games like Cthulhu Wars and Twilight Imperium, but the asymmetry here seems too complicated to be fun. I’ve heard some people compare this to Kemet. What do you think of that comparison?

I don’t object to designers stealing mechanisms etc from earlier games if they come up with a worthwhile new game. But I am not persuaded this has been achieved here. Mind you I am not a fan of any of the other games (Scythe Terra Mystica or Eclipse) that you cite, either. I haven’t come across this but it seems to be a Euro (strike 1) with attempted conflict elements bolted on in excess profusion (strike 2) and a bland theme (strike 3), so pass. After I have lived all my life as an Elizabethan, I discover that I am a Charley.

I think most monarchies are headed that way already... I agree the money should be spend on the people in need instead. I do have a softspot for tradition, though. But you can have that without the insane amounts of money being spend towards it. Or the isolationist attitude of most monarchs.
