Christopher Shannon Penn (October 10, 1965 - January 24, 2006) was an American actor who performed under the name Chris Penn. He was the brother of actor Sean Penn and musician Michael Penn. Noted as a skilled character actor from a prominent acting dynasty, he was typically cast as a tough character, featured as a villain or a working-class thug, or in a comic role and was known for his roles in such films as The Wild Life, Reservoir Dogs, The Funeral, Footloose, Rush Hour, Corky Romano, True Romance, Beethoven's 2nd, Short Cuts, The Boys Club, All the Right Moves, At Close Range, Pale Rider, and Starsky & Hutch. During his career Penn had won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for his performance in The Funeral. He also provided the voice of the corrupt, ruthless cop Edward "Eddie" Pulaski in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Penn started acting at the age of 12 at the Loft Studio and made his film debut in 1979's Charlie and the Talking Buzzard, starring Christopher Hanks. In 1983, he was featured in Francis Ford Coppola's youth drama Rumble Fish and appeared in the high school football drama All the Right Moves as the best friend of Tom Cruise's character. He also appeared in the hit dance movie Footloose in 1984 as the best friend of Kevin Bacon's character; played a villain in the Clint Eastwood western Pale Rider (1985); and co-starred with his brother Sean Penn and mother Eileen Ryan in At Close Range (1986).
Penn, who had a black belt in karate, appeared in the 1989 motion picture Best of the Best as Travis Brickley, a cocky member of the U.S. Taekwondo team taking on the team from Korea. The film also starred James Earl Jones, Sally Kirkland, Eric Roberts, Phillip Rhee, and Simon Rhee. Penn reprised his role in 1993's Best of the Best 2.
Two of his more memorable performances were in Reservoir Dogs as Nice Guy Eddie and True Romance as Nicky Dimes (both characters in scripts written by Quentin Tarantino). In 1996 he won the award for Best Supporting Actor at the Venice Film Festival for The Funeral.
Penn was found dead in his Santa Monica apartment on January 24, 2006, at the age of 40. An autopsy and subsequent toxicology report performed by a Los Angeles County medical examiner revealed the primary cause of death was heart disease. The report also noted that the prescription drug promethazine with codeine and an enlarged heart were possible contributing factors to his death. The toxicology report revealed that Valium, morphine, marijuana and an elevated level of codeine were found in his bloodstream. Penn gained considerable weight throughout the 1990s. Sean Penn said publicly in an interview on Larry King Live that his brother probably died because of his weight.
Penn's gravesite is at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Years ago I worked for a window covering company and Mrs. Penn lived in Malibu this was the same house that Sean and Christopher grew up in. She had us come up to measure her windows for specialty blinds. she was very friendly she told us how Sean would come down the stairs and practice his Spicoloie ( spelling) sorry,… bit when he was auditioning for that Fast Times at Ridgemont High. she was very kind. A very nice lady

That’s a cool Story!!!! Was she a movie agent? I think she was or at least an actress? I remember hearing Sean say that he never wanted to be type cast as Spicolli… he worked damn hard to break that cycle. He’s one of the best!!! So was Chris. Very cool you were at their child home!

Chris died on my birthday. How can I forget! So sad. Great actor and guy. Scott, the whole front of that building is 104. Chris bought it for just over $450,000 in 1997, which is chump change by todays prices. It took the Penn family almost exactly 6 months to sell his place in 2006. It sold for $1, 585,000. Thanks for all the interesting and informative videos. Tommy from Burbank, Ca.

I was in Santa Monica from England UK and I had a good drunk chat with Chris Penn very close to his death. I was sad to hear he died. The barman asked me if I knew who I was talking too most of the night and I didn’t at first but I was a best of the best movie fan and started to recognise him later in the night. A great memory I will always have and time to share. The bar was called Yankee Doodles if I remember correctly, lots of pool tables and I watched Mike Tyson’s last fight in there. I bet that bar isn’t there anymore. RIP He was a very friendly person and it was great chat. I miss Santa Monica

I was out walking with a friend years ago past this building, who went to highschool with Sean and Christopher and used to hang out with Chris, he pointed out Chris's condo and said the family still owned it at that time. This was a couple of years after his death. It's the north side front unit on the 1st floor.

Thank you, Scott. Beautiful tribute to Chris Penn. I remember reading that he would go over to the Fairmont Miramar next door to have a few beers and then walk home. I purchased a condo in the hi-rise in background in 2007 that I now rent out, so missed seeing him but remember the photo of Martin Sheen and Chris's mother in the alleyway. How heartbreaking! Almost like Chris Farley, going over and beyond on food, alcohol and drugs. They did it their way. After watching your video, it's interesting that William Holden was found in his high rise apt, just down the street on Ocean Ave., liquored up, passed out and found dead days later. On a lighter note, Stan Laurel lived just a few doors in between the two buildings back in the 60's when they were apts and what is now Oceana Hotel. Dick Van Dyke would go and visit him there, periodically. I was blessed to have Valerie Harper (Rhoda) and her husband rent my condo prior to her passing away. It was definitely a gift from my mom in the heavens, knowing how much I loved The Mary Tyler Moore Show. A new HBO documentary will be out this year about MTM. Appreciate all you do to make these videos so heartfelt about our favorite entertainers.

I was shooting close to 200 milligram a day for over 9 years! Lost everything during this time of my life. Looking back it's the time wasted is what I struggle with. All the years I threw away for what? I thank God I survived but I stay depressed. Anyway 🤙

I didn't know he passed away either! I had not seen him in a while. And now that I think about him I wondered what happened to him. Now I know. He was really great no matter what part he played. A funny man, a bad guy, a big part, a small part, it didn't matter. What a shock. How did we miss this big news? Really sad as you mentioned. It sounded like he was a walking pharmacy which obviously was not good. He was married at the time of his death, but it sounded like he was living alone according to the conditions of his residence, which sounded deplorable. Plus, his mother was called by his neighbors and house keeper, not his wife. Perhaps he and his wife were having issues or she was away on work. I think she's an actress. Margot Hemmingway died in an apartment in Santa Monica too. Probably not far from Chris Penn's place. I think she committed suicide. Her apartment looked like the white building next door. Santa Monica, such a beautiful place, but such a sad place.

Thanks so much for the recognition of Chris Penn. Proving to all of us that a big bear of a man can still take part in movies. Chris was a tremendous actor, especially in 80s staples you mentioned such as At Close Range, Footloose, the WILD LIFE (amazing), and MADE IN USA (check those two out for anyone that hasn't seen em). Can't believe he was only 40 years old. Wish he could have used something healthier than substances toward the end, as it's clear he had a support system just from the attendees of his funeral. May he have found and be resting in peace. 🙏🌌🌫️

Wasn't he in Lost Boys? He couldn't have been just 40. Edit: ok this happened in 2006 so that makes sense

I remember hearing of his passing, but can't believe it was back in 2006. Even though his brother Sean was more well know, Chris had a presence on screen that made him memorable. He had many personal struggles, but hope he has found peace. Appreciate seeing his resting place. It always surprises me when celebrities have such simple graves. Wish his grave look like someone was visiting it more regularly. Just seeing the ants crawling over his gravestone was just sad.

I saw a special screening of Reservoir dogs with Michael Madson in Austin. He’s generally not the positive light kind of guy, but he spoke of Chris Penn and the dude lit up. He very audibly was choked up when speaking of the amazing person Chris Penn was. RIP to Chris. Gone much too damn soon.

Hi Scott ❣️ I remember when this happened. So sad. He was a heck of an actor. One can imagine what he would have achieved if he was still with us. Thank you Scott. 😊 🕊️🙏❤️ You are always so compassionate Scott. Cleaning off the graves, leaving a rock etc. Thank you. The world needs more Scotts. ❤️

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this about Scott. I watch another vid about graves in Hollywood called HOLLYWOOD graveyard. And while i love Arthur Dark's vid at HG, the personal and compassionate touch by Scott is something very special and that I don't see at HG. Scott is a winner!

Remembered him from Footloose, Best of the Best movies, and Resevoir Dogs. He also played a really good villain role on an episode of Law and Order: CI. Iwas saddened by his passing, he was really good! RIP!

Just finished watching, “At Close Range” for the first time!!! I was a little kid and wasn’t allowed to watch it back in the day. I had forgotten all about it until it came on my KZread Home for Madonnas “Live to Tell” one of the best songs she ever sang IMO. Chris Penn’s line, “Dad!?” In “At Close Range” is now burned in my memory. So freakin sad!!! He’s gone but never forgotten. RIP 💝

I remember his death because it was only 1 ½ weeks before my own father died. He really did look like Sean in his youth, almost his twin, it sucks that his weight basically led to his early death. At least it wasn't as tragic as Chris Farley. --- Great Work Scott.
