Opening Music is The Astral Plane by Jory Nash available at www.jorynash.com
River Jude Phoenix (né Bottom; August 23, 1970 - October 31, 1993) was an American actor and musician.
Phoenix grew up in an itinerant family, as the older brother of Rain Phoenix, Joaquin Phoenix, Liberty Phoenix, and Summer Phoenix. He had no formal schooling, but showed an instinctive talent for the guitar. He began his acting career at age 10 in television commercials. He starred in the science fiction adventure film Explorers (1985) and had his first notable role in 1986's Stand by Me, a coming-of-age film based on the novella The Body by Stephen King. Phoenix made a transition into more adult-oriented roles with Running on Empty (1988), playing Danny Pope, the son of fugitive parents in a well-received performance that earned him a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (at age 18, he became the sixth-youngest nominee in the category), and My Own Private Idaho (1991), playing Michael Waters, a gay hustler in search of his estranged mother. For his performance in the latter, Phoenix garnered enormous praise and won a Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 1991 Venice Film Festival as well as Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead and National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actor, becoming the second-youngest winner of the former.
In late October 1993, Phoenix had returned to Los Angeles after flying back from one week in New Mexico. Before that, he had spent six to seven weeks in Utah to complete the three weeks of interior shots left on his last project, Dark Blood. The film was finally completed in 2012.
In his book Running with Monsters Bob Forrest wrote that Phoenix spent the days preceding his death on a drug binge with John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Phoenix and John Frusciante were consuming cocaine and heroin and had not slept for several days.
On the evening of October 30, 1993, Phoenix arrived at The Viper Room, a Hollywood nightclub partly owned by Johnny Depp, with his girlfriend Samantha Mathis and his brother Joaquin and sister Rain. Phoenix was to perform with the band P. The band featured Phoenix's friends Flea and John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers, Al Jourgensen of Ministry, and Depp.
According to Bob Forrest, during the performance by P, Phoenix tapped him on the shoulder to tell him he was not feeling well and that he thought he had overdosed. Forrest said to Phoenix that he did not think that he was overdosing because he could stand and talk. Nonetheless, he offered to take Phoenix home, but Phoenix declined, saying he was feeling better. A few moments later, a commotion erupted in the club and Forrest went outside to find Mathis screaming as Phoenix was lying on the sidewalk having convulsions. Unable to determine whether Phoenix was breathing, Joaquin called 911. Rain proceeded to give Phoenix mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
According to Gibby Haynes, the band was performing their song "Michael Stipe" while Phoenix was outside the venue having seizures on the sidewalk. When the news filtered through the club, Flea left the stage and rushed outside. By that time, paramedics had arrived on the scene and found Phoenix turning cyanotic, suffering from cardiac arrest, and asystolic. They administered medication in an attempt to restart his heart.
When the ambulance arrived, Phoenix was still alive, and Flea accompanied him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Attempts to resuscitate Phoenix at the hospital were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 1:51 a.m. PST on the morning of October 31, 1993, at the age of 23.
River Phoenix was cremated and his ashes were scattered at the family ranch in Micanopy, Florida.

My sister and I visited the Viper room shortly after River Phoenix's death. My sister was a big fan of his. So much so she named her son River. I still remember all the flowers left for him and all the writing on the walls of condolence for him. We went there several times on that trip. The last time before we left Los Angeles my sister wanted to leave flowers for River. The one and only time I did not go with her. The door to the Viper room was open that afternoon and as my sister walked by Johnny Depp was in the door way just inside the room. She looked in and smiled at him and he waved at her and smiled. It is too bad that the city is going to tear that building down. Thanks for the video and bringing back memories.

Matinee Idol by Rufus Wainwright is also dedicated to River Phoenix. As a child of a drug addict, an amazing book into Rivers life is ‘A Night at the Viper Room’ by Gavin Edwards. It’s also an audiobook on audible, and very well narrated. My favourite movie with River was Running On Empty and I really enjoyed his comedy role in ‘I Love you to Death’. *A Great Actor.*

My favourite River movies were Stand By Me, A Night In The Life Of Jimmy Reardon and My Own Private Idaho. He was one of a kind and so gentle. Whilst Joaquin is a talented actor, River was extraordinarily talented, so I agree he most definitely would be an Oscar winner for sure. Such a tragic loss and heartbreaking end of a brilliant young man. I had the pleasure of visiting LA in 2012 & 2013 and got to see the Viper Room in person. I'm thankful i have those memories, especially now they're tearing a piece of history down. Thank you for documenting this and being respectful and honouring the people you talk about. RIP River 🩶

He was the best. Only 23…I was 18 when he transitioned. I don’t like saying died because we as souls/spirits .. never die just our physical bodies do. Energy can’t die it can only change forms. Even though I was a MAJOR fan and that started around age 13 … it still was a “love” I never realized until I got older that even though I never met him he still was my first love. Thanks so so much for this. Take care❤❤

He was so special that the world lost someone so dear that he had made the world a better place. Now I am fifty years old and I miss the hell out of him still. Thanks for honoring River. I remember hearing the news and knowing both the hurt of his passing and the hurt of what could have been. Not only a fabulous actor, but a fabulous human being as well. I know this had to have affected all those "celebrities" at the Viper that night. Haunting - in a way, I suppose. And it does seem ironic that this iconic club and the strip of buildings around it are soon to be knocked down. Such a damned shame. Anyway, like you, I could go on and on. Being from that era, it's hard not to compare what was good then to what is good now. Different zones and times, I suppose. But - thanx for the video. And please, Take Care, my friend.

Its kind of ashame how corporate entities are starting to take over sunset and the strip around the old viper room. Luckily, there will never be ridiculous condominiums and whatever else they're destroying to build, at the whiskey agogo being as it's a historical landmark that is certified. The passing of River Phoenix was certainly a tragic event. Sadly it happened right in front of his younger brother and sister. We have all done reckless things in our lives, even those of us who are now old enough to be able to get those senior citizens discounts! We were just lucky. It is not our place to judge anyone, especially if they are no longer here to speak for themselves. Rest In Peace River Phoenix, gone too soon, but never forgotten.

Of course we all did reckless things but in River Phoenix case it happened that he had not known what had been in the cup handed to him by John Frusciante and he could not have assumed that it was a liquid speedball because they are not consumed that way, meaning you do not "drink" a speedball. But he gulped the contents of the little cup down without knowing what the cup contained. It contained a brown liquid that consisted of at least two drugs (the ones that are public knowledge) in an amount that would have killed an elephant. And when he had an immediate bad reaction no one called 911 until it was too late. He died after roughly 45 minutes (where nobody had the guts to call 911) right there on the pavement with relatives and "friends" staring at him and not doing anything. It was more than tragic, it was accidental manslaughter and failure to render assistance.

God bless.. this one hit me hard in high school. I was such a fan growing up and still am but, it was like losing another friend. I'd already lost some but, just lost a friend to his best friend accidentally shooting him showing him a gun. Stand By Me is my favorite probably, but, Thing Called Love, Explorers, really everything he did was great. 😇 I remember Ghost Adventures had an EVP of his voice and a guitar sound on their Viper Room episode.

This really got me in my feels. River was my first "celebrity crush" when i was younger and that stayed with me for a long time, still does, and there will always be a part of me that gets emotional when talking about his passing. I feel that the song that P was playing that night was almost foreshadowing, and very ominous. Gives me chills. Listening to you replay the events from that night brought tears to my eyes. Makes me think of my brother who passed away, on October 30th 2010, from heroin. He was 26. The loss of your sibling never goes away, and i know River's siblings each have their own lives and careers, but that pain still stays. Very good video Scott. Very emotional. I do hope i can make it out there before they tear it down.

Scott thanks for bringing that up again about how the work/art of famous people moves and inspires us. So it does affect us when they pass on. And we usually share or talk about it on things such as social media. It just upsets me when ignorant minded folks ridicule others for paying respects to those famous people we never knew personally. We are connected in some way forever. Others just need to understand this fully.
