Chinese Tourist PRANK BACKFIRES: I Become a Tourist Attraction Speaking Fluent Chinese

I wanted to prank some Chinese tourists, it completely backfired. Living in China for 8 years makes speaking Chinese a normal part of everyday life. I went all the way to Burma and met some strangers that just happen to live right down the street from my home in Shanghai. I seemed to scare them at first by speaking fluent Chinese, but quickly gained their respect and friendship when I said I was a grad student at Fudan University, which just happens to be in their hometown. They LOVED IT! Then we quickly became friends. I appreciate these folks taking me in as one of their own.

For 4 generations at least, my family was born and raised in Southern California so we don’t speak Spanish, but we have Mexican heritage. So when people see me they assume I speak Spanish and are surprised when I tell them I don’t. I don’t try to learn cuz when I speak, I don’t pronounce the words correctly. And thus I get made fun of, so I don’t bother trying.

Only now, I also appreciate your interviews with interesting people. You are very good at conversing with people, even with creepy guys most women would stay away from (that one was funny, although if you were my daughter, I would have been concerned).

I am from Germany but speak Cantonese. Canton people flip out when they hear me speaking because the language is so comparatively rare. They are so deeply grateful for foreigners taking an interest in their language, history, and culture. I lived in Hong Kong for two years and fell in love with the language. It is not for everyone but it is very unique. My favorite is to make jokes in the language and invent new phrases that make sense in English and are "TECHNICALLY" correct in Cantonese but no one would ever say these, so for me they are pretty funny to use in conversation.

My childhood language learning story is rather funny. My grandpa and grandma were originally from Fujian province. So, they spoke Fujian dialect at home. And they watched movies in Mandarin. (When I was young, I was even confused that these two are of the same language 😁). And I spoke Burmese with my friends and learnt English at school. Finally, this experience has pushed my English to an advanced level and my Mandarin Chinese to an intermediate level (with some bit of Fujian phrases for an extra) 😁.
