Clueless White Girl Orders Boba Tea in Perfect Chinese, Owner Stunned

Ойын-сауық

Today me and friend Jillian (@jjsaysnyc) went out to get boba tea (bubble tea) in Chinatown and she totally shocked the owner with her perfect Mandarin! Then we went around Chinatown and chatted with different people in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Fuzhounese. Very funny prank and social experiment - and then next time we go get dim sum in Chinese, which was equally hilarious! For more language learning vids remember to subscribe!

You joke, but once in an Apple store in Shanghai, an associate started speaking to me in English, but I was with my S. Korean friend who only knew Korean and Chinese. She kept asking me in Chinese what he was saying, so it got to a point where I was translating his broken English to my broken Chinese. And the dude let this go one for a full minute seeing me translate to her before I was like fuck it and told the dude to speak Chinese to us. Crazy part is, when we walked in, he started off in Chinese, then walked away to grab something and came back and only spoke English after that. It was so weird.

@@CarlosGarcia-kt2du *I agree with you on some things and disagree on others. I don't think Xiaoman will hit a ceiling anytime soon. He has his niche on youtube and there are few competitors at his level. Also, the people in Chinatown will probably treat him even better as time goes on and not get bored with him. They will be aware of how many OTHER Chinese people are watching which in turn means if they appear on his video they will be seen by many other Chinese around the world. This loop of self-awareness of being viewed by your fellow Chinese means they will be on their best behavior. Xiaoman's main challenge after that will be getting AUTHENTIC responses, this will be his main challenge and could lead to a decline in the future.*

when i was younger, there was no one except for my family that spoke cantonese. there weren’t many asian people in my hometown, since i grew up in louisiana, and most of them spoke mandarin, so my cantonese just began to decline since i started learning and getting better at speaking english, and my parents just slowly stopped speaking cantonese to me. my grandma only knows how to speak cantonese, but she moved away back to hong kong, and all my other relatives lived in california or moved back to hong kong. now, i can’t read or write any cantonese, but i can understand when other people say it to me, and my tones and pronunciation are absolute trash, but needless to say, ya’ll speaking mandarin and fuzhounese and cantonese just makes my heart so happy. lots of love!!

We have a lot of third, fourth, and fifth generation Chinese where I grew up, who can't speak a word of Chinese. Same thing with the Vietnamese kids here. By about the third generation, not many of them can speak it. I worked with a guy name Mike Hernandez in Miami, and he got so tired of people hearing his name and trying to speak to him in Spanish, which he did not speak at all, being fifth generation Mexican, from Colorado. He used to say, "Uh, excuse me, there hasn't been a Hernandez in my family who could speak Spanish for fifty years."

I’m pretty sure it’s a proven fact that those that are bilingual/know more than 1 language have been known to have shifts in personality when they speak another language that’s not their mother tongue. And I can kinda confirm this because I’m currently learning Japanese and when speaking idk I just feel different haha, more confident and happy lol

I’m not really fascinated by them speaking Chinese. They studied and learned it. The thing is, English is considered much more universal - particularly in business and among people from all over the world who are educated. I think what’s entertaining about these is when you see the reaction of the Chinese people getting a kick out of hearing Americans speaking such polished Chinese - and even being able to be flexible with various dialects. I get a kick out of watching them get a kick out of what they’re seeing and hearing. But... They need to start branching out into other stuff. After seeing a few of these the schtick gets old. They needs to stage arguments amongst each other and think of funny scenarios where it would become a more entertaining candid camera type of thing. Besides, half the residents of Chinatown must know who this guy is by now. It’s getting old quick.
