White Guy Surprises People in NYC Chinatown with Perfect Chinese
I did a social experiment / prank where as a white guy I walked up to various Chinese vendors in NYC’s Chinatown, began speaking to them in English, and then switched over mid-conversation to Chinese (a combination of Mandarin and Cantonese, Mandarin I’m quite fluent in, Cantonese less so). We filmed their genuine reactions!
This is an idea I’ve been wanting to film for a while, inspired by a combination of videos by JAYKEEOUT and laoshu505000. It didn’t come out quite as I planned, my camera’s autofocus is terrible in bright light, but hopefully this can be the first of a series if you guys like it!

Literally like he doesn’t do much except being a white guy that speaks Chinese but for some reason I love it so much
Being multi-lingual changes everything. The looks on the faces immediately brighten - its like opening a door when you speak another person's native language.
Did you see how quickly the people's guard dropped when he started speaking in Mandarin and Cantonese? He was instantly accepted, truly amazing...
lol all the chinese ladies praising him "you're so smart" they're basically just saying BECOME MY SON
You could see their whole demeanor change once you spoke their language!
He ends up buying a lot of unnecessary stuffs.
They legit respected you so much when you spoke their language, that’s nice.
I love how random people walking down the sidewalk suddenly stop and listen. "Is . . . is that white boy speaking Chinese?"
Making people smile by speaking their language AND supporting their businesses? You're the homie forreal! 😂
not only he can speak, but he did well in the humble part. one of the big thing in the chinese culture. well done, xiaoma
The way the people with whom you interact just light up...you can tell they feel respected that someone took the time to learn THEIR language(s), instead of being treated impatiently with their grasp of ours. That’s the best part for me. The look of gratitude and relief that they can relax and speak their first language.
I said 'hi' in chinese once to someone in a restaurant and they instantly rattled off their life story back to me in chinese and i'm like, 'i only know how to say hi'.
They look at him like an idiot when he speaks English.. But he's Einstein as soon as he switches.
I showed this to my mom who was disappointed that I couldn't speak as good Mandarin as him. I just didn't know what to say because we are Indians.
"What's your name?"
Why do I love all these videos lol
Those Chinese grandmothers really looked happy hearing him speak Mandarin.
Xiaoma! El domingo te vi leyendo un diario en chino en Chinatown y empecé a gritar a todo pulmón cuando te reconocí. 😂 Gracias por ser tan amable y por iluminar este mundo con tu empatía, curiosidad, excelencia y buena onda! Soy tu fan. Abrazo grande!
I literally cannot stop watching because you’re making so many people SMILE AND I LOVE IT 😭
