Speaking Japanese: Locals Shocked by Foreigners with Homemade R2D2

What happens when you show up at a mall in Japan with R2D2? We are about to find out through a little social experiment. My friend Richard in Kyushu, Japan spent 6 years building this R2D2 by hand. Let's see how people react to us just showing up randomly.

I've gotten quiet a few comments saying "People you randomly meet on the street are not your friends." But every friendship has start and sometimes you do start a friendship with a total stranger walking down the street. That's how I met Richard in October and ended up flying back to see him again. It's easy to make friends in Japan! Improve your language skills and make even more friends with some online Japanese lessons. As former customer, I highly recommend this site: www.japanesepod101.com/member/go.php?r=810124&l=%2F

I don't understand why people have to point out that if you randomly meet someone on the street he is not your friend .As a youtuber shooting this Video clip with him , you can very well call him casually a friend and who knows maybe some day it turns into a real friendship .Is it just me ? I feel like people turn a non issue into an issue.

If it wasn't for people like me I'm very sure we will still be walking around in the dark, I am what you call a 1%er because without people like me there would be know dreams or drives. for the 99% of the people that love me for what i do there is the 1% that tells me to stay in the house too. i except that and I embrace it. Because with you, i would have stayed in the house and never tried to build an R2. So my respect to you and your honesty . Thank you

Twenty years ago the reaction would have been much more intense. Star Wars isn't in the media as much as it was, and some of the younger kids probably only knew it was a robot which in itself was neat. The kids were always much more excited when their parents were also excited. R2 provoked quite the response so that yourself, and Richard were kind of relegated to side show status. This was a cute video.

Is this R2 unit remote controlled or does it use sensors and AI? I have friends who build Star Wars stuff, including fully functioning R2D2 and a 1:1 Millennium Falcon cockpit replica. Amongst many other SW related stuff.

"Japan is all about rules. If rules are broken, they don't know what to do." Well I'm pretty sure they know how to solve many things -with rules or without rules. That's why Japan is one of the most advanced countries in the world

Those guys at the end were hilarious, "no way, this guys a genius!!" The way the creator programmed the bot to see objects and move forward and interact with the sounds was just perfect. I feel in Japan people love a good show as well, so you can get away with that in the mall because it was so well created, didn't bump into anything and a great photo opportunity. Pretty amazing job on that robot.
