It's how practically everyone did it in their day. To create something new without even knowing how the current best system functions is simply not the best strategy. Remember that the US soldiers that landed in Europe in 1917 were armed (even their rifles' ) with French and British equipment because it was both good and was being manufactured in quantity. The USA was a third world country little more than century ago and it generously copied French, German and British technology. People also fundamentally underestimate how complex reverse engineering is and what tremendous knowledge and industrial effort it requires it requires to recreate the thousands of subcontractors/parts required to manufacture 'reverse engineered' anything.

This is usually a symptom of older fully developed countries so what is even crazier is that China is a new market economy and still not fully developed. But final truth is just take a trip from Shenzhen to see rows of super cars, up to a village in Hunan and see millions of people living without roads or any sign or any real civilization. dilango 1011 I have no doubt that the tanks are good. The problem is the crews. Training in China mostly consists of political indoctrination, as the PLA is considered more of a political tool of the CCP rather than a proper fighting force. I bet if you put a Russian crew in one of these tanks and sent them to some battlefield somewhere, they'd preform pretty well.

This is an interesting video, I would challenge your sources on a number of details though: - Your figure for 96B production is too high. Its production run was very limited and not intended for mass adoption. - FY-I and FY-II reactive armour equips Type 59D. 96 and 99 series are equipped with FY-IV and FY-V. - 96A has an 800hp 12/150ZL-1 engine, not 1000hp. This weak engine was the main reason 96B was submitted to tank biathlon. - 96B has FY-IV just like 96A, this is not an upgrade. Main 96B upgrade is the new hull rear accommodating new engine. - What sources are you using for the upgrade to the thermal viewer? - ''Same engine as 96A...'' No. Simply looking at 96A and B you can see their engines are different. - Again, FY-II does not equip the 99 tank. - 99A not only has new turret but new chassis as well. - ''Type 99A2'' drawing you refer to is a fake, its a 99A turret stuck onto the 'new light tank' design submitted by 201 Institute, which lost to 617 Institute's submission, the (now) ZTQ-15. This info has been around since 2016. Finally, you posted this video in 2018 but a lot of your sources are very dubious in verification and some are 10 years old if older. This is asking for trouble. I like your videos, I hope my comment is useful to you.

For those saying "lol China makes shitty military stuff XD" I think it is worth noting that their military industry really starts trying to catch up in 1977 when Deng starts the "Four Modernization", which among its goals is transforming the PLA from a Maoist "People's War" army into a modern army. There's also the fact that China was politically isolated from both sides of the Cold War during the Mao years and any form of military assistance from the West was cut after Tianenmen. The primary source for military tech was Russia, which military industry fell into a coma after the collapse of the USSR, recovering only when Putin came to power. So all things considered, I think they're doing a decent job at modernizing

Copying something as complex as a tank or aircraft is exceedingly hard and generally doesn't work out. It may be true that it's a bureaucratic requirement rather than an industrial one as attempting to recreate the industrial infrastructure may ultimately be harder than simply working within your means. Essentially the Chinese have had access to Russian turbines for several decades now and my current understanding is that their native turbines still fall well short. Now if some of the smartest minds have worked on it for so long how easy is this 'copying' really?

its even later than that. when Deng came into power, he prioritized the economy over the military, the military actually saw budget cuts all the way into the 80s, many projects were axed after the lost of a single prototype because there was no money to replace it. the military only really started to modernize in the late 80s and really kicked into gear after witnessing the 1991 gulf war

Those who say that know nothing about military stuff themselves. China actually made prototypes for 120mm, 152mm, and 125mm guns. China chose 125mm guns + longer barrel for good reason. (part of it is that 125mm is entirely sufficient to go through western tanks if needed) But people who have very little knowledge automatically think 125mm suck because Iraq.

Interesting fact, Yugoslavia's M-84 was license-built T-72. Then, via Poland, Yugoslavia got it's hands on 18 of the Warsaw Pact non-export T-72 versions. It reverse-engineered them, improved them and named them M-84A. Both were a stop-gap sollution until the M-90 Vihor was ready. Sadly, the Nationalists were ready before it and Yugoslavia got torn-up before the tank was put into production. After the war, Croatia picked-up the project and developed the M-95 Degman, with improved electrical systems, an improved gun and modern ERA. Sadly, it still remained a Prototype only. It is in fact has better base armor than the T-90 and ZTZ-99.

You Didn't Talk About T-14 I Just Want To Talk About It FOR FUN Because I Don't Have Anyone Else To Talk With ! I'm Sure You Don't Know Its Capabilities . You Know Su-57 Has 2 Side-Looking Radars Named N036B With A Range Of 120 Km Against 1 m2 . Interesting To Know T-14 Has The Same AESA Radar !!! An AESA Radar On A Tank ??? You Might Say It's Impossible But The Russians Made It Possible !!! The Only Tanks In The World Which Have Radars Are The Israeli Merkava IV (4) & T-14 Armata . The Radar On Merkava Is Not So Powerful And It's Not AESA But T-14 Has A 5th Gen Fighter Radar !!! Its Afghanit Active Protection System Is The Best APS In The World Which Can Even Prevent An APFSDS At A Speed Of 2500 m/s From Hitting The Tank !!! THIS IS INCREDIBLE !!! It Also Has A Powerful Jamming System For Jamming Enemy Radio & Radar-Guided Anti-Tank Missiles ( I Mean AGM-114 Hellfire ) . In An Animated Video It Showed An AH-64D Apache Fired A Hellfire At It And In The Last Seconds In The Kill Zone The Missile Turned Around ! This Isn't Just A Normal Animation The System Really Has Such Capabilities !!! This System Can Also Detonate Any Mine In Front Or Around The Tank Before The Tank Gets In The Damage Radius !!! T-14 Has A 1500 - 2000 hp Engine Which Will Make It Reach Much More Speed Than Any Existing Tank ( 85-90 Km/h On Road , 33-40 Km/h Offroad ) & Also It Has More Range ! Compared To M1's 120mm Cannon The T-14 Has A 125/152mm Smoothbore Cannon ! The 152mm Cannon In Future Will Destroy Any M1 Abrams Tank With Only 1 Shot !!! Its Cannon Has An Auto-Loader Which Will Make Its Rate Of Fire 10-12 Rnds/min While The Abrams Will Just Reach 5-6 Rnds/min Due To Manual Loading ! And The Turret Is Unmanned !!! Just Wanted To Talk About T-14 !!!

The ZTZ-96 medium tank is for rough ground where other tanks such as the Abrams, ZTZ-99A2 and other tanks can't traverse. This kind of terrain makes up a huge part of China. It's supposed to be lighter armor focused on Chemical rounds.

Chinese jet Engines for example, are piss poor. even though their copies of Russian Engines. and that's because the Chinese don't know the exact mineral mixes of metals and other things used to make those Engines. that's why China's aerospace Ind, is heavily lacking and is way behind the Russians and the USA when it comes to actually making Engines just as good as the Russians

The Chinese always have a very pragmatic mind set. Getting good enough stuff with the budget they have, instead of the best of everything. For a country that won't have any active military threat, its cheap enough while still maintain the deterrence ability. At least they won't have a military industrial complex pulling the strings of the government

Though for countries like China who can't invade anyone, the stake is too high to fight anyone, and risk little to be invaded, they don't really need that many expensive show piece. Just keep up with the research, make good enough stuff with enough quantity and call it a day.
