@@PumpkinEater-dm1xx It is not confirmed T-90M Proryv-3 uses 2A82-1M, and if it does then it must use a slightly weaker version of the 2A82 on the T-14. This is provable with a simple check of google images. Most likely, it just uses even more modernized version of 2A46M-5. China has developed a better gun for the ZTZ-99A too (basic ZTZ-99 and ZTZ-96A/B still use original ZPT-98 gun), which is more powerful, accurate, and reliable than both original ZPT-98 and 2A46M-5 guns (accuracy is proven in tank biathlon of 2018, will be proven again this year). It can penetrate 960mm+ RHA at 2000m, which is only slightly less than what 2A82 on T-14 can penetrate (1000mm RHA at 2000m). A test at closer ranges found that it can penetrate 1040mm+ of steel, so that proof that it is a very capable gun in terms of firepower. So while 2A82-1M found on T-14 is better than new ZPT-98 version, it won't be better by that much. The gun on the T-90M will at most be roughly equal to the new ZTZ-99A gun in terms of power, but what the gun of ZTZ-99A really excels in is accuracy. And the gun isn't everything that matters. It is pretty much a fact that ZTZ-99A has extremely high protection levels against APFSDS and HEAT at the front (but not the sides). It is completely covered by FY-4 and FY-5, both of which are comparable (or slightly superior) to Relikt ERA. So even if T-90M has a marginally more powerful gun, it won't matter when ZTZ-99A has extremely powerful ERA plus extremely strong passive composite armor underneath the ERA (you can find pictures of ZTZ-99A without ERA online, and it is comparable to Leopard 2A5). And this combination of composite armor plus ERA far exceeds what 2A82-1M is capable of penetrating at most engagement ranges, let alone whatever gun is on T-90M. The T-90M, however, only has the Relikt ERA to rely on. The hull armor is still the same as T-72B, and the turret armor is only marginally better (at most) than T-90A. In any case, ZTZ-99A will be able to penetrate and destroy a T-90M frontally at a farther distance than the T-90M is able to penetrate the ZTZ-99A frontally. However, in terms of urban combat, T-90M has the edge because of having Relikt ERA on the side turret and hull, whereas ZTZ-99A has all it's ERA focused on the front and turret side. Another thing is FCS, imaging systems, sights, electronics, etc. The ones on ZTZ-99A are extremely sophisticated and modern, and RedEffect has a video on this (video describing Chinese tanks). While those on T-90M are definitely very much upgraded and modern, my bets are that the ones on ZTZ-99A are still better. ZTZ-99A also completely trumps T-90M in terms of mobility. However, both ZTZ-99A and T-90M are very modern and capable tanks, and both are either better or at least equal to the latest tanks used by NATO. And, both ZTZ-99A and T-90M are definitely less capable than the next-generation T-14. So let's hope all three tanks fight alongside each other, rather than against each other :)

Indeed, many of Chinese military equipment are based on existing foreign versions. But truth is usually you can copy little more than the idea itself. Chinese designers need to build their own version based on the technology they already have. So I guess in many cases "re-design" might be a more suitable word?

When fired upon by the 105mm cannon and H13 atgm on the live firing range, the frontal turret protection is 550mm for ap and 650 for heat, and it meets the requirements of the military. (second paragraph) The composite and angled add-on armour of the 96a tank's protection capability is an upgrade of the type 96. has 600 to 650mm against ap and 750 to 800 against heat, and it is enough to match up against surrounding countries' deployed MBTs' HEAT FS and APFSDS.(end)

Ok let's get this done with. Leclerc in a nutshell: + good fire control with excellent optics and digital combat system + commander's own independent thermal viewer for situational awareness + very fast autoloader for rapid firing + fast speed, good mobility + digital battle managetment for better situational awareness for the commander + separate ammuntion bunker with blow-out panels in the back of the turret + can be fitted with extra add-on armor on the sides for increased side protection Overall I would say a very powerful and capable tank, with very strong offensive capabilities, especially when fitted with the add-on armor (such as in the UAE) it is a good tank.

@@patriotic3123 Tungsten is nothing really special, most APFSDS penetrators are made of Tungsten as well (some are even made of Depleted Uranium), so it's nothing special. The swedish tank trials in 1998 have proven that the turret armor of the early Leclerc was more vulnerable than the Leopard 2A5 (but still equal to the M1A2 Abrams). Yes, the new SXXI upgrade may have improved the protection a little bit further. So yes I agree the latest Leclerc model may not have bad armor protection.

With a longer barreled gun (50 caliber instead of 48 caliber), more modern ammunition, superior fire control systems (modern fire control computers, thermal imaging, hunter-killer fire control, and muzzle reference sensors), a more powerful 1300 horsepower diesel engine, and a much heavier armor suite, the VT-4 would be too much more than a match against T-80U and all T-72 variants

One thing that I think is worth mentioning is that type 96b isn't technically "accepted" by the PLA. The 96b appears in the russia competition is rather a "prototype"-ish version that built solely for the competition. The final version that PLA might equip(this is actually doubtful considers the mass production of ztz-99a and ztl-15 light tank) is still under testing and may delivers it's first batches in the future three years.

With respect, "protection" is not only the armor value of the tank, although it does matter alot, you also have to consider other aspects, such as mine protection, and top bottom armour, is it suceptible to cluster muntions?, is it capable of protecting itself against rpgs to the back of the vehicle?, that is also something to be considered. Survivability is also not so in depth, you can go to crew spacing, fire extinguishing system, and maybe NBC system, all helps the tank to survive in attacks. Or you just didn't have time to do it all in depth....

Meanwhile the T-72B3 looks like cookie sheet with an upside down fryingpan strapped to it. In order to improve protection, they strapped boxes of ERA all over it, causing to look very ugly. The protection of the Type 96B is seriously overstated, and China has serious problems with structural materials and the use of foreign components in its weapons control system. In particular the destruction of the chassis in case of overload and questionable effectiveness of armor. T-72B3 2016 uses not K-5, but a hybrid ERA its protection and stability are significantly higher than the original. This somewhat smoothes out the problem with the already clearly insufficient armor of the body's forehead and the old cast tower, in which the combined armor is replaced. But this is a consequence of the use of the original t-72B sample 1989. Thermal imagers used generation 2+, produced under a localized license Thales in Russia. Type 96B somewhat resembles object 187, the configuration of the reservation of the hull and tower. But this does not remove the problem of lack of necessary materials and lack of experience, not everything can be bought.

I don't think even the Kornet E missile could penetrate the turret of the m1a2sepv3, but the m1a3 hasn't been upgraded a lot yet so it might be slightly more vulnerable. And the merkava: no chance of getting through the turret, the hull is a weak spot though, so maybe that can wound some crew members. It lost a wheel and still finished second in the competition. Russia took first place, but they literally always take first place anyway. So if anything, the fact that the Chinese tank still managed to come out on top even after losing a wheel, that is a testament to the machine's reliability. Want to see an example Russian tank mechanical failure, also in the competition? When India brought their T-90S tank to the competition, it broke down even without losing wheels. And their spare tank T-90 also broke down. While this year, the Iranian T-72B3 (borrowed to them for the competition only, Iran has only T-72S 'Shildon' in their army) caught on fire, for no particular reason. So which tank has bigger issues? Answer: none of them. Shit happens all the time. T-90S is not unreliable just because of one instance of failure (it probably had more to do with bad maintenance of the tanks) Also, ZTZ-96 (or maybe Type 85-IIM which is basically less capable ZTZ-96 prototype and for export only) operated by Sudanese army reportedly destroyed around four South Sudanese T-72AV or T-72M1, possibly T-72B in a major battle, while suffering no losses. The T-72s were ripped apart, although not surprising because they are older models with Kontakt-5 ERA to protect against APFSDS. But that is still tested in combat, with an untarnished reputation

Not totally fair as T-72B3 is an upgraded late 80s tank. It’s more comparable to Type-96 not Type-96B.

@Usecriticalthinking Try it again with respect and without profanity, do use critical thinking before the hasty conclusions gets the better of you. And no, Rheinmetall L44 has nothing to do with America. When West Germany designed it, American designers are still in deep fond in the concept of tank-launched ATGMS from large caliber low chamber pressure guns from the MBT-70 project. When M1A1 Abrams got their licensed production M256 variant L44, Leopard 2 has been rocking with the L44 for 6 years. I am not denying that Chinese designers utilized reverse engineered products, but what I am trying to say is that when it comes to machines of war, tasked with defending national prosperity, betterment, or even survival, it isn't a matter of who copied who, it is a matter of getting the job done.
